Someone explain to me how SLI/Crossfire doesn't increase VRAM? Like if you put two 4gb cards together why don't you get a total of 8 gigs of VRAM?

Is it because one card's memory can't be used by the other card or something like this?
>>
>>51597688

Primarily whatever cooler they slap on a card and their warranties.

different coolers, different quality of components, some come factory overclocked, sometimes the cards are bundled with a certain game, stuff like that.

Upgrading to 980. Is there any noticeable difference between FTW, SC and SSC other than the way the heat is dispersed? I have H100i cooling
>>
>>51597688

Depends on the card but it's mostly about the cooling. MSI for example may employ a bigger heatsink, more heatpipes, bigger/more/quieter fans than another. Also the factory overclocks, customer support, warranties, aesthetics, and the like differ.

I'm pretty techilliterate(not compared to the standard user, I can build and maintain my own shit, but compared to you guys, I'm clueless) and I basically know fuck all about cards. I haven't kept up to date on what's good and what's not for about a decade now. need advice please.

I've been running a SLI 460 GTX setup for years, and I feel like they sorely need an upgrade. I've looked at Radeon R9 380, 4gb. Reviews tell me it's a good card at the price. Is there a better alternative at the same price range, though? And how the fuck do I figure out which manufacturer to look for? Club3d is a bit cheaper than MSI, for instance, but would I be screwing myself if I went for the cheaper option?
>>
>>51598431
Asus, Gigabyte, Evga, MSI are probably imo the 4 brands for video cards.

Also i wouldn't get Radeon personally, they fry your card literally with their drivers.
>>
>>51598431
Nope, the 380 is THE best budget card out right now. It's competitor is the GTX 960 but the 380 is proven faster in about 3/4 of all games. Make sure you get the 4 GB version though.

Club3d is trash. Get either MSI Gaming or Sapphire Nitro, both are proven good cards.

Is it ever worth it to consider SLI/Crossfire as opposed to upgrading to a more powerful card? I'm looking at building a new computer soon and am wondering whether I should considering paying extra for a better motherboard and power supply so I'd have room for expansion later or if it would be cheaper in the long run to just purchase an entirely new graphics card a few years after when the original stops performing as well in newer games.
>>
>>51598493
>>51598489
Thanks to the both of you. I'll stick with the 380, I'm sure they'll fix the drivers.

I'll have to fork over a bit more for MSI, but if I'm spending money, I'd rather have a card that lasts.

Depends on what you'd tolerate.

Most new AAA games will have good support for either (expect better SLI support) but some games can shit themselves with one or both.

You wouldn't encounter nearly as many problems with one powerful card, albeit at worse performance per dollar.
>>
>>51598431
If I'm not mistaken, the 380 is the best card at its price range. If you can though, save up for a 390 or 970; they're not much more expensive and you'll be much more satisfied.

I'd prefer minimal issues with actual game play, how much shit related to troubleshooting and getting it working with a game I'd put up with depends on the cost savings. If there'd be regular troubleshooting shit for minor cost savings I'd probably just pay a bit extra and skip the problems.
>>
I got the gigabyte version of R9 390

>>
>>51598955
Go with one stronger card then. You never know what kind of bullshit multi card setups can bring sometimes.
>>
>>51598727
It was intended as a joke.

>>51598671
To be serious for a second, it entirely depends on how much you OC. A light overclock can give you 5FPS in some of the more heavier games, though. It's usually worth it, especially for a relatively old (but still capable) card like the 7970. Plus Sapphire has great aftermarket cooling.
I mean, you'll be wanting to buy a new card soonish anyway, get as much out of your current card as possible.

Hybrid Cooling.

Advantages:
>Extremely cool temps
>Quieter than both reference and open air
>MUCH Quieter when overclocked vs open air
>No fuckhuge cards
>Much lower CPU temps
>Lower case temperature in general, leading to more reliability from components

Disadvantages:
>Can be expensive
>If you have no room to mount the radiator that's your fault for being a poorfag and buying a shitty case

It's only real con is price.
>>
>>51599340

The con of hybrid cooling is you don't cool secondary components as well as watercooling which - especially for gpus - is important balls out overclocks.

This is why (though cpu related) EKWB make some mobo vrm blocks.
>>
>>51599306
>haha you're wrong! it was the other shitty gaymes!
>>
>>51599340

Disadvantages
>DOES NOT COOL THE VRMS
That's why I'm getting full waterblocks for both of mine ASAP. It's also a waste to have two 120mm radiators on a mount that could fit a 280mm radiator.
>>
>>51596820
>7850
>1080p
>1220Mhz on core/1350Mhz memory

1080p is a breeze at 60fps at various settings depending on title, although the OC is quite necessary. If you care more about framerate than dumb special effects then you don't need anything much newer than this.
>>
>>51599380
>>51599391
Great point actually. Will consider if I ever decide to go with a Hybrid.
>>
