What does /g/ think about this? Im thinking of either getting or the macbook air 11 but in open to suggestions
>>

It depends of your needs.
>>
10/10 aesthetics
Shit/10 everything else
>>
>>51595679

Only one port on the entire machine, which will usually be filled by the charger.

Can't even plug a usb stick or external hard disk in without an expensive Apple dongle.

Shitty keyboard that is almost impossible to type on.

At least go for the Air - the "Macbook" is dreadful.
>>
>one usb-c port

have fun giving a presentation on low battery, since you can't connect to a projector AND plug in your laptop
>>
>>51595679
It's close to flawless, if you're looking for a portable laptop and don't need the power of a desktop replacement nor mind the lack of ports.

I am pretty happy with mine for sure.

>macbook air 11
Stop right there. It's inferior to MB is any way, saving few bucks for a shitty screen and bit more ports isn't worth it.

The only somehow viable alternative for maximal portability is some Core M Asus, which is few hundred bucks cheaper and overall pretty okay. Though you would have a much worse trackpad.
>>
>>51595749
>Shitty keyboard that is almost impossible to type on.
It's different from the ones in other Macbooks but pretty awesome in it's own way. Just takes time to get used to the shorter travel, on the other side it feels less swallow, more click-y and precise.
>>
>>51595679
if you are wealthy and you want a really posh enjoyable to use facebook machine then they are brilliant. macbook air 11 is shit.
>>
>>51595750

hmm ok?
>>
>>51595892
It's more like 9h on non silly brightness settings, senpai.

How is the weather in Africa, brah?
>>
>>51595785
>saving few bucks for a shitty screen and bit more ports isn't worth it.

I agree with the screen bit. Not so much the extra ports bit.

Considering that there isn't even an "normal" USB port on the Macbook I'd get the Air without ever thinking twice about it. It will just be a better computer when taking into consideration that you can plug a mouse in or an external HDD for time machine backups
>>
>>51595945
most people who post on /g/ are teenagers or college students. just because you have 1000 bucks in your bank account doesn't mean you can afford to be buying a 1000 dollar laptop. have you ever heard of a thing called personal finance
>>
>>51595836
That just means you're okay with eating shit.
>>
>>51595679
That one port thing is bullshit. It's like Windows 8's and Gnome 3's design, like "lets maek everythin simble :)", but in the end it's not even simpler, it just lacks features and is shit. Also the processor has throttling issues. I think you'd be better of buying a good convertible laptop/tablet with Windows.
>>
>>51595882
OP here, well I want some of the Apple suite software and I already have a desktop windows computer, but I also want it to be portable at the same time
>>
>>51595749

USB C is an open standard, buy adapter on amazon for $5
>>
>>51596088
Well I already have a windows computer but I want the Apple software
>>
>>51595999
Well, it obviously depends on what you're planning to do with it too. Just given the crappy screen, I'd say 11 Air is simply not viable given the price and one would be better off with the 13 one, that has other pros or some Windows alternative.

Also
>using mouse
>on Apple laptops
Why.

>>51596032
>have you ever heard of a thing called personal finance
If 1000 bucks break the bank, you're either extremely poor for first world standards and/or suck at financing.
Given that OP talks about ultrabooks, he/she is probably not that poor, since even the most shitty ones are around 700 bucks and if going up to 1400 makes a difference for you … you shouldn't even consider the 700 bucks option, since objectively both are overpriced and offer premium features one can live without.

Or tl;tr version: Poor fags should get some used Chinkpad.

>>
>>51596179
Because the mouse is still a better input device for work no matter how good the trackpad might be.

Regardless, not being able to plug in an external HDD or any kind of USB accessory is what kills the 12" MacBook for me.

Yeah, there is an accessory but it is just not good enough a solution
>>
>>51596364
Macbook 11 has more ports but worse screen, keyboard, track pad and case.

You can buy adapters online for USB C. Don't buy the Apple one, it's for norms who don't know any better.
>>
>>51596364
Consider that the base Air 11 got 4GB/128GB SSD though, MB got twice as much (and a much faster SSD too), so the price difference isn't THAT huge.

Also the screen on Air 11 was okay back in 2012, these days it's just shit compared to others. At least the 13" Air got better battery life and 16:10 screen, although the resolution is crap.

If ports is a huge issues for you despite adaptors/having desktop PC, rather pick the 13" Air.
>>
>>51596364
have you actually seen the macbook 11 in person? it feels so cheap and the screen is bad. its apples biggest rip off
>>
It's a nice netbook. It would be a good machine for light note taking or web browsing. It's not great, though. The keyboard is awful and the one port is a major problem.

It's competitive with some $300 netbooks. It's better than some and worse than others.
>>
>>51595679

I had my heart set on the new Dell XPS but after reading some reviews on Reddit it seems like there are quality control issues and that Dell have been misleading with regard to battery life.

It's still worse. They have a decent amount of travel. The Macbook keyboard has so little travel you may as well use a touchscreen.

Comparing it to $300 netbooks with crappy chiclet keyboards, it's merely bad. Comparing it to computers in the same price range, it's downright insulting.

Likely because it's not bad enough that you're getting shafted on an inferior product, but that you're being charged way in excess at the same time. What is so hard for you to understand about that?

This seems like the appropriate thread to ask. I've had macs in the past, but have been building my own machines since my first Cyrex 66mhz back in the day when I was like 7 or 8. I've been in the military for a few years and am getting out and going back to school.

I like nice things, and the price doesn't necessarily matter but I don't want to dole out money like a retard. I'm looking for something thin and light to carry for 12-16 hours a day for university and won't mind the daily jostle of a rather harsh urban bike ride on my mountain bike. Stairs, ledges, and there are a few rooftops I hot on the way some days for fun.

Anyway, I was looking at the Macbook originally which is why I came into this thread. It seems to have everything I'd be after and that screen is very nice. I'm also looking at a Lenovo X1 Carbon. What do you guys think between the two? Any other suggestions? I'd like to stay under $2k but I think that should be plenty. Already have a solid desktop setup I just built and an older Lenovo Y580 for mobile gaming. Thanks for the input.

One other thought. If I can find something around $2k that has decent battery life, reasonable weight, and a dedicated GPU that will surpass the Y580s overclocked to fuck GTX660m I'll consider that too. Consolidating devices is good, and my little sister is getting into gaming so I'd just give the Y580 to her this xmas.

If we're taking performance into account, the Carbon also wins handily on CPU and GPU.

Jesus Christ, retard. It's $950 base, $1100 with the RAM and SSD upgrade, and $1200 if you add a 1440p screen.

And that's if you match the Macbook. The Thinkpad has way more customization options, meaning that you can save quite a bit of money by skimping on what doesn't matter to you.

My mother has one. For her needs (youtube, surfing, skyping) it is perfect.
I have to admid, I love the keyboard (I am using a black mechanical for my desktop)

BUT... its performance is where you are afraid of putting it in your mind: low, very low. PDFs scolling smoothly? lol nope
Wanna compile something? Make a coffee and better drink it, too.
Want to stream some music while working on something other: prepare to charge in 30 mins.

So, it is very portable, is has a nice screen and a very nice keyboard, it looks kinda sexy. But especially the last two points are extremly dependent on the user's point of view....
>>
>>51598351
>2.9 pounds isn't an ultraportable
Face it, faggot. They are in the same weight class. The X1 Carbon beats the Macbook every way except weight, and the weight is very close.

A few minutes ago, screen quality was the only thing that mattered. Now weight is the only thing that matters. Next you'll be saying that the competition MUST be made of aluminum or it's shit.

This is what Macfags always do. Someone presents a machine that crushes the Mac in almost every single way, but is slightly worse in one area. Then the Macfag says that one area is ALL that matters and, even though the Mac is shit in every other way, it wins on this area.

Just running a VM is not impressive, particularly with something as lightweight as Gentoo. I can run a Windows 7 VM on my T400, and that's a super wimpy machine by modern standards.

Try running a heavy OS. Try running multiple VMs. Try doing serious 3D work. It will fail miserably on any of those.
