Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working onmaking it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-*buntus except vanilla Ubuntu (Unity)
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Why would anyone reccomend Debian for beginners? It's only good for servers, takes way too much effort to get a usable desktop OS out of it.

Debian comes with pre-configured DEs, dumbass.

I've been using Mint for a long while now and it's good but I want to go to the next level when I get a new computer.

I though Debian would be good but then again I was also thinking of just going all out and giving Arch or Gentoo a try.
>>
>>51595670
A DE is bare minimum functionality. Then your have to fuck about with adding repos, updating packages to versions from this decade, fixing the horrible font rendering, etc etc.

Is this actually true? I'm using Antergos and never had any crashes or package problems. I would like to get a response from an Arch user.

It's a fucking meme. Antergos is literally Arch.
>>
>>51595804
They're literally all the same.
>>
>>51595868
Yeah, I know. It's like 95% Arch with an added antergos repo. But I've never really installed vanilla Arch and I was wondering if it's exactly the same.
>>
>>51595844
No, the image was probably made by some butthurt fag that couldn't get arch installed.

Antergos is literally arch with an extra repro for their maintained packages (i.e. their tools). You can disable the repro and have a completely vanilla arch install.
>>
>>51595891
Well, you can install Architect which is Arch easy-mode.
>>
>>51595891
The main difference is the installation process. Once that's over it's probably about the same
>>

I did that, but only in a vm.

Antergos installer is terrible but the overall system looks good but you can add the repo to arches pacman.conf and have it, I say Arch would be one of the top distros for personal use unless it is a struggle getting it t work due to drivers or lack of knowledge.

Debian is for people who kind of care
Arch/Gentoo is for people who really care

The only thing different from installing Ubuntu and switching to Xfce is there will be a bunch of default programs installed. There used to be a guide to switch from ubuntu-desktop to xubuntu-desktop and remove the excess packages, but iirc it hasn't been updated recently. It shouldn't make a difference, except it might show a bunch of useless/duplicate programs in the menus.

i386 means it is for 32-bit computers. Most computers these days will be 64-bit, so you will want to use the x86-64 or x64 iso.

OK, that's an option, but Arch ends up functioning the same either way. You can obviously learn a lot about your operating system and how it works by installing it manually, but there are other ways of learning though.

My reason: I use Arch exclusively and I don't want to browse the wiki from my mobile device everytime I want to install it. The installation is not that hard anyway but the way the wiki is structured, it's hard to remember the steps.

So, I used to have a 3x3TB md RAID5 array. I have upgraded it to a 6x3TB RAID6 today.

Before resize2fs'ing the old 6TB partition, I ran a benchmark on it (bonnie++) and got around 530MB/s seq write and 640MB/s seq read. I then resized the partition to use the full 12TB, restarted to make sure everything was mounting fine and re-ran bonnie++. This time both my seq read and write are around 400+MB/s, any idea what exactly could have caused the performance drop? Surely it can't be due to my growing the partition.

This isn't really an issue (goal is to max out 1Gbps LAN anyway - speeds are more than adequate), but I'm very curious if anyone has any idea.
>>
>>51598587
well if you have asperger you might have trouble seeing the difference

Begineners guide with ~3000 word count and ends with you just getting booted in to terminal with internet working, it all ends there. This rather simple picture on the other hand describes how to get to working arch install easily and lists/will list all the required packages and some tweaks thats more definitly are on the great an all mighty wiki, but its a bit of a hunt

any arch user who did not installed arch for a year might welcome a simple go-through list

>>51598641
>1. Do not recommend nano for sudoers list, this section may require an update
when I did it like that I saw a temp file is being edited, so I think its safe and theres check before changes are applied. Recommending to just visudo with vi can cause a lot of headache to dumb users and I am not going to add vim tutorial to the infographic

doing it through that french repo I think all dependencies will go down with it

you mean the reflector part? why?

I am more worried about locale, its a bitch of a section to fit nicely and I am not 100% sure if what I wrote there will work fine

I wouldn't say there is much point at all.
As for sudo, it's kind of the point of gentoo that it doesn't presuppose anything about the system. If you don't intend to have users why would you want sudo? Some people don't think it is very secure and prefer to manage without it too.

I let it sit for about 5 minutes thinking it might have just been painfully slow to load drivers from my USB or something, but nothing happened.

Does it just not load some drivers properly in the live environment ?
My intention was to dual boot for a while to see if I'd be able to get various software running and if NTFS works 100%, but this had me wondering if it would work after installing.

Does it get better if I go through with the install, or is the live environment what I can expect out of the box on my system ?
I don't think there's anything too obscure in my computer, pic related is specs. I do have an Auzentech X-Fi Bravura though it shows up as HD Audio because the proper drivers don't exist anymore, but if anything that should only fuck up audio and not everything else, right ?

-now I have grub but no windows 7
-fortunately there is an option for Windows 8(which I deleted months ago, I guess the boot info still remains) from which I can get into Windows 7 after some error screens and file checking.

I don't expect anyone to help me with this essay but here goes:
So I wanted to start somewhere with learning about more advanced GNU/Linux topics like the compilation process since I'm fucking clueless about anything that isn't 'aptitude install'

I ended up with Gentoo on my fuckaround Chinkpad and since I don't want it to melt my lap or burn my house on every emerge I thought I would offload some work to a Xeon box using distcc.

Anyway, I installed distcc on both Gentoo and A Debian instance on the server that will be helping with emerging. I configured everything properly. The box is an X86_64 and gentoo is a core2duo i686.

Do I need to take any special steps for the cross compile toolchain? I thought that wouldn't be necessary since i have the i686 gcc version on both machines....

I'm getting vague errors on the Debian box in /var/log/distcc.log and can't even get the log file to tell me details for some odd reason...

I'm lost at this point...

Also, I have a hypervisor that can emulate a Core2duo. When I make a VM with a Core2duo and apt-get gcc I get the i585 while my laptop, a core2duo gets i686. Is there an explanation for this?
