yes, it may be "simple" to write php, but it's much harder to write good php
Most good CS schools use ML and Scheme(Lisp) for teaching and learning - you can find a lot of support and resources for learning them, primarily because they exist only as teaching languages; and will therefore also give you a lot of transferable skills and understanding that you can use to develop your knowledge of other languages.
Other schools use Java, which is obviously also a production language, so may suit you better if you want something you can actually "do stuff" in; but be advised that you will be learning Java - lots of people will tell you that you are missing out on a lot of transferable knowledge.
Its based on your aims. If you only want to learn a language for fun, heck, I'd try Python.
