Just setup this frankenstein from other spare parts. 3770K, 32GB of RAM, 20TB of storage. Runs WS2012, and Ubuntu Server in a Hyper-V. Plex, AFP for Time Machine backups, Steam Streaming to my shit macbook once my GPU arrives, and compiling rig for my large projects.

Fuck I love this thing.

This server used to be two servers. the i7/32GB with a 256GB SSD for a MC server that I recently shut down. But it also hosted all my sites/mysql DBs and cloud9 services, so I couldn't just axe it.

The plex server ran on a PowerEdge T110, with 8TB of storage. A bad PSU in the PE killed all my HDDs just recently, so I said fuck it, I'll buy new hard drives but I'm combining all my hardware.
Out popped this baby.

On a side note: I'm pretty surprised that WS12 recognizes my UPS as a battery backup natively. As if it were a laptop.

what's the necessity of a home server

like what benefit do you get from having one
>>
>>51586302
I use mine because it has better uptime. My desktop BSOD's all the time so having another box I can leave on 24/7 is good.

Plus I can put it in a DMZ on my firewall instead of having my desktop be publicly accessible, so I can watch Plex on the go.
>>
>>51586302
Plex. I absolutely love being able to stream all this content, plus, I share it with my friends and family.
>>
>>51586383
>>51586349
can someone please explain what plex is? I always hear it
>>
>>51586425
You stream movies, TV and music with it. You host the content, you choose who your clients are.
>>
>>51586662
so you're streaming through a service? I thought /g/ was against this type of thing where other people have access to your data
>>
>>51586728
Plex is software you install on your own server. It can transcode, has Chromecast support, and Android/iOS/TV apps. It's crazy awesome.
>>
What exactly do you use your home server for? I'm not really familiar with the benefits of having one or why someone would have one for their home
>>
>>51586425

>Plus I can put it in a DMZ on my firewall instead of having my desktop be publicly accessible

Why would you do this? Port forwarding is you friend. It's never a good idea to put a server in the DMZ unless it's absolutely necessary and well hardened.
>>
>>51586744
Do you know if I can use it with a roku?

It sounds great though, Ill need to look into it
>>
I am using an old thinkstation as a web server/ for wordpress development and samba for backup. Actually performs pretty damn well for her specs and age.
>>
>>51586749
I'm OP, so a rather repetitive statement, but here goes nothing.

I use it primarily for Plex & 24/7 storage.

I enjoy running my own file share, so I can just right click a file on my computer, and it'll auto generate a link to share with my friends. Really useful for sharing images or PDFs.

I use a 2TB HDD and AFP to have my MacBook use remote time capsule backup, wherever I am.

I use Steam to stream games to my laptop, which is really underpowered and my main desktop is up in college over the winter break at my folk's place.

I also run a teamspeak server for friends.

Since this machine is my only windows-running machine, it's also nice to have a accessible-wherever Windows install god forbid I need to use Inventor or some other bullshit over RDP.

VPN too, for when I need it.

Granted, most of this stuff requires decent connections, but my house line is 300mbs up/down, and my school is a gigabit. The only thing I have a slight problem with is steam streaming over VPN at school. The ~15ms latency is enough to prevent me from playing Dota perfectly, but I can still stream MGS5 or Witcher 3 to my laptop at school, a few hundred miles away, just fine.

>3770k in a home server

For what purpose
>>
>>51586971
Plex for 20-30 people, and Steam streaming. A single 3770k is actually underpowered for what I'm doing, desu.
>>
>>51586982
Hard to believe you have 20 people streaming Plex at the same time, 20TB seems small for that amount of people.
>>
>>51586982
>20-30 people
Do you run a fucking slum house?
>>
oh hey gee

I use mine for:
Plex
Torrenting
Mumble Server
Source Dedicated Servers
IRC
General downloading of shit

I built it in like 2012 when i was in college. Its probably underpowered and shit tier by your standards but it does what i need
>>
>>51587009
No, there's usually 4-6 people streaming. But everything is 1080p, and some people need to transcode, so transcoding 4 1080p streams is pretty taxing. The max I've had at once was 14 I think, right after I put the Interview on the server. But that was on the older hardware and streaming was actually shit-tier since the hardware couldn't keep up. I have about 300 movies and 140 TV shows.

>>51587025

So no ECC, no ZFS.

>20TB of storage

I hate to tell you this, but, you fucked up, son.
>>
>>51587158
After christmas I might go back and separate the storage from the guts of the server and setup a FreeNAS install. Got a server with a Xeon 3430 and 16GB of ECC RAM, but the problem is it's only got 4 bays, and since Dell a shit, the motherboard isn't standard and doesn't fit into other cases. Gotta figure out a way of getting this setup without spending too much money.
>>
>>51587176
You need ~1 GB ram/TB with zfs though + a little overhead + a little for freeNAS etc so with 16GB ECC ram you're looking at <20TB anyways. If you have some 3TB drives you could use 4 of those.
>>
>>51587242
>>51587176

Though is all you store is pirated media, you don't need zfs anyways.
>>
>>51587242
Oh, I totally knew I needed more RAM, but I really want to salvage the Xeon + Mobo.

>>51587259
This too. I kinda understand the risks I'm taking here, but there's nothing stopping me from just re-downloading lost content. (Which I'm doing right now, since I lost 4TB of content after my drives were fried)
>>
>>51587268
Juryrigg a case woth work with the mb and stick in another 16GB and you're golden.

But to be honest, within 2 years everything will be 4K and you're gonna re-download it all anyways.

Do you guys think those small Raspberry Pi/C.H.I.P. computers make good servers? I really can't feel bad about leaving them on 24/7 since they're so low power.

At the moment, I can't really think of much to do with one. I can set one up with Bittorrent, an FTP server to backup some files to, and IRC (for 24/7 idling epeen and bragging rights that my posts are coming from one of these tiny computers). I'll just connect to it via my primary computer using SSH and keep these different things going with Screen. I really just want one of these computers because they're so cool and cheap. I'd love to hear some suggestions on how I could get the most out of such a server.

I have email notifications set up for Pi Zero and C.H.I.P., I'm buying whichever comes into stock first.

>Intel i7-860 + Dell M-ATX mobo
>500W PSU
>1TB HDD 7200RPM

+2 Monitors with lines all over them.... I intend on switching out the caps and hopefully repair them.

I was planning on using the i5-2500 + MOBO + PSU + Some corsair RAM I have around + new HDDS to put together a home server. Mainly for media storage + maybe a website in the future.

NAS = Network Attached Storage. It's storage attached to your network. Think of it like a "cloud" that lives in your house.
ECC = Error Correcting Code. You may or may not need ECC for ZFS. It depends on who you ask and/or how much you care about your data.
ZFS = Filesystem used by FreeNAS.
WS2012 = Pervasive malware that targets servers.

Case: SuperMicro CSE-836BA-R920B 3U
Mobo: X9SRH-7F-O
RAM: 2x 8GB Samsung DDR3-1600 Registered ECC
CPU: Xeon E5-1620v2 (No cooler)

4x Monoprice SFF-8087 cables
HDDS: 16x2TB WD Reds (RAIDZ-3 pool => 26TB usable)
OS: SSD 840 EVO 120GB (Either FreeNAS or Debian)

Total: $3280

Took me a while to come up with this config, not sure if the mobo will comply with a non Revision K chassis, but there's no other rack case I feel is good enough for a decent price.

I'm more comfortable with the 2tb price tag currently as it'll give me 26 tb usable storage at least and that's for me right now plenty of space.

I've got a Proliant SE326M1. As it's a special edition, I can't find any documentation. The MoBo product number is 591747-001, and I can't find anything on that either. The most pressing question I have right now is: does this MoBo have PWM fan regulation? The fans are connected to a 6-pin on the MoBo with an adapter that splits in 2 6-pin males marked "inlet" and "outlet". PWMcontrol says there's no PWM controlled fans (I've already used lm-sensors). I've tried installing the ProLiant suite of thingies, reading the manual I found it doesn't have fan control options. I'm thinking the server has no PWM controller. Am I wrong? I've not found any 6-pins external controllers, are there any? Could I do something with some 555s? Maybe not the right thread as it's a 2U rack server, but can anyone help me? I'll try /sqt/ again if not.

I retired my 2006 Mac Pro as my main desktop and turned it into a server.

2.66Ghz x2 Xeon
7GB ECC Ram
1x SSD 160GB (Ubuntu)
1x 3TB HD (Films, TV)
1x 4TB HD (Time capsule backups, owncloud, har disk images)
1x 160GB HD (IP Cam storage)

It also has 4 DVB-S2 tuners and 2 DVB-T2 tuners (PCI-E) for TVheadend.

I have some XBMC/Kodi boxes around the house which access shared folders on the server via AFP or NFS. The PVR uses the TVHeadend software to stream TV from the DVB cards.

I also have Plex installed for accessing content when i am away. I have read about an upcoming development for Kodi so as soon as it is compatible with iOS i will be ditching plex.

I also run transmission for torrents, and owncloud for keeping my documents on my laptop/desktops in sync.

Thanks for reading

Which is currently the most stable raid style to use: zfs, btrfs or mdadm? Say for small storage around 3x3TB WD Reds. Data integrity is important as it will be used for other people's files as well (backups will be made).

I've tried btrfs and zfs, but zfs is doing that thing where it doesn't auto mount at boot...

can someone explain to me what a JBOD is? like I get it, it's just disks but what does that mean in real world application?

if i have a server with 6 sata drives and i connect them to my motherboard through SATA3, i will get smart info and all that jazz for each one which is desirable. Do i understand it right that with JBOD my computer would just see the sum of all disks together as one unit and it wouldn't be able to give me more detailed information?

why would you ever want a JBOD configuration in that case?
>>
>>51599787
JBOD stands for "Just a Bunch Of Disks". It is what that sounds like. The OS sees all the disks as one big glommed-together disk.

There's no redundancy or performance increase, unlike RAID. If any one disk bites it then anything that happened to be on that part of the JBOD is gone, the rest of the disks are probably recoverable. Unlike RAID, JBOD works fine with whatever random disks you want to tack onto it, even if they're different sizes or such.

Typically you don't want to use it. It's easy to implement for the guy making the controller and writing the OS, and it might be convenient for you if you're just throwing something non-mission-critical together with what you have to hand. But if you're all "damn, I can't fit all my Chinese cartoons on this server, and all I have are these spare drives... well, I can re-download anything I lose" then it might come in handy, is all.
>>
>>51599868
Jbod shouldn't combine all disks into one large volume. That's spanning.

Is anyone familiar with a SAS2 expander backplane?

It connects 24 SAS/SATA drives and it only has one SF8087 connector.

Can I just use an onboard 8-port SF8087 connection for this? Or do I need to get a 24-port LSI HBA? But it's just one connection to the backplane? I'm really confused about this.. how do I get those drives connected to my motherboard and if I have to use a PCIe HBA card, what kind would I need?

The internet isn't really helpful and precise on what to buy for a SAS2 expander backplane...

Halp please.
>>
>>51600860
I do need transcoding since I'm serving it to a raspberry pi which can't transcode. I assume you're saying this is a bad system for that because of it's low processing speed?
>>
>>51600904
yeah, if it only has one port then one port is all you need. the backplane has a build in expander.
so indeed you can run them of the onboard 8-port controller.
>>
>>51600973
Woah how does that even work though? I mean all those 24 drives into one connection to a 8port onboard SFF8087? I don't get it, there has to be a catch to this how can this work? Will I get proper reporting on all the drives? Is it slower compared to a backplane that has 5 sff8087 connectors, each handling 4 drives (Should I go for this kind of backplane instead)?

Thank you for answering though.

>proprietary raid

You can build yourself something faster and with way more drive bays than the synology/drobo trash.
>>
>>51601037
it just expands it, look into normal sas expanders for that. but indeed the speed will be limited to the bandwidth of a single SFF8087 (6gbit/s in case of sas2)
>>
>>51601114
I see so you're saving cable but you're losing speed, since now 24 drives go through 6 GB/s, whereas with multiple SFF8087 connections you'd have 5x4 drives at 6GB/s.

But realistically speaking are you really going to use 6 GB/s with all 24 drives running? I remember reading that sas3 is overkill and 6gb/s is plenty even for these large configurations. Would you be able to comment on this issue?

Today, over month after I moved my gear to the rack I realized why it was so loud compared to when it was in the tower case.

It's the goddamned low profile GeForce 610 GT with it's tiny shitty fan going at supersonic speeds at all time DESPITE having no outputs attached.

Of course the open source nouveau drivers don't allow for fan control. Had to remove it and order a radeon with a passive cooling.

Seriously. That one fan accounted for probably half of the noise out of 8x 7200rpm drives, 4 fans, 1 cpu cooler and PSU. Jesus christ.

>>
>>51605767
>>Hows your power usage? I feel like my usage wouldn't even make it worth running it 24/7.
when last I measured it it was like 130 watts. It's probably a little better now since I swapped the decade-old (and quite noisy) Sparkle PSU in it for a modern EVGA 80+ bronze one. Obviously this shit varies depending on CPU load and such. Comes out to something in the vicinity of ten bucks a month in power, if I remember right.

>Do you recommend Nehalem because of performance only?
Not only. That is part of it, I'd have an easier time running VMs with a more recent CPU. I envy the people who have ten-core Xeons and shit. A more recent CPU will bring down your idle power, too, though, and give you a more recent motherboard. Which can give you features like SATA3 that you may care about.

It ain't economical to spend the cost of a modern CPU just to save power, if you have the C2Q gear sitting around already. it'll take way too long to pay for itself. Even if you cut your power in half it'll take years to break even. It is economical for datacenter operators that use megawatts of power - those guys worry about the voltage of their RAM and shit, since if you save a half a watt per DIMM, that's 50 kilowatts of power you save and another 50 kilowatts of cooling you don't need. You ain't doin' that, you're running one machine, probably at idle most of the time. If you can afford to own it you can afford to run it, even if you live in Germoney or Glorious Nippon where electricity is expensive.
>>

I run my own AD domain in the house so I can have better control of what the kids do with their computers.

It's also great as a media server and backup for important files without having to rely on the cloud.

It's also a secure VPN.

I also use it for testing network scenarios that could be beneficial for my workplace.

Servers provide a service, if there is a service you want, then why not make your own?
>>
I'm planning on getting an Orange PI for a very little home server. A ssh-server, rtorrent, and maybe backup. At elast for start.

do you recomend arch or void linux to set it up? I also want to learn that kind of distro killing two bird with one stone.

So? Do you think most enterprises use 6tb+ drives? There are reasons why several smaller disks are preferable to few large ones.

Look at rack servers that have a shitload of 2.5 inch bays.
>>
Hey guys, I'm trying to host an html webpage from my pc. I've tried using WampServer, but could only get it to host on my local network. How do you host a webpage to the www?

I'm not so much worried about security as I am to get it to work. I just want to be able share my content to people not on my local network.

Why would I *NEED* this? I can just share a folder on my Winblows and access it with any computer attached to the network

Seems like extra hassle for no reason.

well, like you said, computer.

with plex, you can access it to your phone, roku, and such.

its pretty much crafting your own hulu / netflix.

but, you are right in a way. if all you have is a small network and don't give a shit about watching stuff on tiny ass phones and tablets, it is taking a very simple thing and making overly complex for zero benefit.

and as one anon pointed out, my ISP would cut off my internet for something like that. not only do they have a zero internet server hosting clause in their ToS for regular consumer internet, but i also have a small ass 300gb a month limit. all for the low price of $70 a month.

>>51601421
why didn't you just use the normal nvidia drivers instead of shittastic nouveau?
>>
>>51609958

dont get letters from my ISP, they don't care if I constantly use 500/500.

I live in the Netherlands and I don't work in IT, its just a hobby for me.
>>

I'm just scared of your electricity bill

What hard drives do you use?

I am looking for a new 4TB (or more) HDD for desktop use. I mainly use WD Red 4TB drives now.
>>
>>51615436
P neat,m i'm getting 500/500 soon in The Netherlands soon too.
Might get a new rack for my 2 servers and build it up a little so i can rent out things for friends/people ^^

I have 8 harddrives totaling about 20 TB of data.. what's the cheapest way I can get them all running on a nas? Most mobos only have 6 sata ports. Would I need to spend alot of money for a specialty mobo or something?
>>
>>51616187
get a IBM m1015 (<100$ on ebay) and flash it to the IT firmware.
>>
are there any nas cases with a tiny footprint, but with 8-12 HDD bays?
how many drives can you have spinning under your TV before noise becomes an issue?
why dont the manufacturers make something similar to an 8-bay QNAP or something, like a smaller version of a supermicro case?
>>
I'm buying my first server case, it's a 3U one but I don't want to spend money on a rack cabinet.. what's a good way to stabilize the case above ground? Are there some kind of desk-feet I should look into that lower vibration?

I dont have space to put it on a high desk, it'll go below one of my desks so I'm looking for some low platform with anti-vibrational legs I guess? Any advice would be helpful..

Why do so many people use FreeNAS with ZFS instead of like debian?

I'd prefer using debian, since I can also install openvpn and http proxy etc.

Is there a big reason everyone's using freenas instead that I'm missing here?
>>
>>51616454
because you literally throw it on a usb drive and it just works, you can do anything you need from the web interface and it only takes max 15 minutes to get to that point
>>
>>51616494
freenas is a giant fucking pain in the ass to get working correctly, and then if you want to change shit down the line good fucking luck

it takes a metric shit ton of ram and if you dont use ecc you are just trying to look smart and make your life harder.

Especially when it appears to be switched off anyway... (led is not lit)
>>
>>51616528
What do you recommend then?
I'm about to screw aroudn with freeNas and openmediavault on a vm before deciding on what to use.
Feel like It's gona suck on 3gb ram.

Storage is cheap nowadays, I can just buy a 60gb ssd for $30 and put linux on there, so that argument is silly.

>web interface
I'd rather just use a console, no? Seems like I'm bound to whatever the webgui can do and I like to have full control over everything which means..

linux > freenas, unless you have some other points?
>>
>>51616733
give one reason why it shouldnt be. and dust isnt one of them
>>

dude get it off the carpet mate

>>
>>51616785
static charge has nothing to do with it, and neither do vibrations. you are dumb as fuck
>>
>>51616754
what are you getting at?

people use freenas for the same reason as they use qnap or synology, its a managed system so its easy as fuck

thats the reason, how do you not understand this? thats the advantage
>>
>>51616664
how do you manage esxi server for free?
>>
>>51616882
the same way you would manage the paid version: the fat client

I'm not going to fucking put filth of the kind of nvidia binary drivers on my precious server.

It's an aesthetic choice. Besides, from what I've read on the interwebs they don't give you control over the fan either.
