Same. I should've gotten an SSD earlier, only bought one this year.

I'll never fall for /g/'s memes again.
>>
>>51584065
Because you can still buy a 2TB HDD for less than $100 right now and SSDs are only beneficial for a 128-256GB OS partition to help speed up vydia/program loading times and system boot up times. They are not meant to be used for storage of movies and tv shows since those things can take up over 1TB of storage space.

At least for right now using only an SSD alone is a really bad investment. Things may change as prices for SSDs keep dropping though, I can accept that.

Epic meme, /b/ro. SSDs are way more reliable than HDDs. Unless you bought some Kingston dogshit, your SSD will run reliably for years. Meanwhile HDDs just shit the bed randomly whenever the fuck they want.

I have one of those Plextor mSATA drives as my boot and software drive, while I use a few HDDs for other bullshit

Boot times are a tad faster than having an HDD as a boot drive with shit on it, problem is I don't restart my computer or turn it off enough for it to matter to me. Software also doesn't have a noticeable difference in launching compared to using HDD

I'd rather have a set date that's a long fucking time away than a drive that has absolutely no guarantee at all because of moving parts. To the all retards in this thread arguing about SSD's dying due to too excess wear.

Do you realize how much data you actually have to WRITE per day just to see the drive start giving reallocated sectors?

For example the EVO series are rated at 75-150 TBW.

That's 4-8 years respectively of writing 50GB every single day.
>>
>>51584951

>15-20 years

You have to be trolling. Enterprise class mechanical drives don't even last that long. They're only warrantied for 5 years max.

When a mechanical drive fails you're fucked. When an SSD fails you can usually still read the data.

Better performance for less energy use.

>8 watt for a spinning disk (Average) input/output

At 28.4 cents AUD per watt and X it by 7 years = $17.04 a year X 10 years = $170

Green hard drives 6watts (Western digital green label) = $12.8 a year x 10 years = $128

Samsung SSD 850 ev0
4.7 watts are max input/output is 10 a year x 10 years $100

That is true. Not only do the disk used the SSD part as a buffer but the caching software fails and sectors die young. The life is the same as a normal disk but with a slight speed increase. However i'd just buy an ssd and then use raid 1TB risks together.

That is what I am doing right now in fact.

I'm not implying you should be using a HDD for a system disk if that's what your thinking.

System drive is going to get lots of page file writes, so it should be a better class of SSD (Samsung 840/850PRO, Intel SSDs, Sandisk Extreme, etc)

The 'value' range SSDs aren't a good fit for system drives as it's entirely possible to actually write 50-100GB a day to the page file.

What? you have a single point of failure with both. No redundancy with the raid and a single disk with the black.

Come back when you use raid 1 or 5. Then claim reliable.

Maybe I do not want two local disks. I want one single, high capacity one that is not prohibitively expensive or complicated to set up.

Besides, I could just add an SSD later and do the same shit you are talking about but with a SSD+SSHD combo rather than SSD+HDD

The HDD that was storing my music was close to death (SMART warnings out the wazoo)

And honestly, I was sick of having to move the data around to to disks failing simply because of the load/unload count.

An SSD isn't going to fail because of my aggressive power management.

Learn to program, to the processes of computing, learning how cpu information in placed from disk > ram > cpu > < ram < disk.

Doesn't matter if you won't actually use that much. I got one of those Sandisk 480 GB SSDs that were $110 a few days ago and am in the process of reinstalling all my shit on it right now. I was originally looking at a ~256 GB SSD + a 1TB HDD for my other shit, but then I realized I have less than 100 GB of shit that wasn't Windows, Linux, or games, so it just didn't make sense for me to have an SSD + an HDD.

One, it was original used for the purpose of aid support. Running out of memory space which is then sent to the disk to use up as VMram.

The new purpose used by modern application is that if memory space is reserved by a application and the CPU bus is currently being used by a single node process then the disk will be contacted to see if the SCSI controller on it will process the information.

It no longer applies to memory aid. It applies to application processing. It can speed up mission critical applications. If you has a ssd it will surely improved critical applicable nodes.
>>
>>51585428
Some of us don't shove bloat onto our RAM and abuse the virtual page model.

Yes you do. Running anything in java or C is bloated with padding code. In fact using those two languages allows exploits in memory to in fact those applications. Memory leaks also apply to most of microsoft 10 OS applications.

In linux is also is compiled into C compilers in the CPU terminal. So you are using a C based emulator to execute code from CPU to disk > to ram.

Bloatware everywhere.

Sort of. There's two main ways an SSD can die. One is it reaching the maximum number of writes/having failed nand. You can still read this and copy it to another drive before disposing of it or sending it in for replacement.
The other is the controller dying, which although much less likely than a HDD failing there's no real warning before your drive bites the dust.

Both of these things are going to be improving as the technology advances though unlike hard drives which are becoming more volatile as density/platters increase.

Also if you're really concerned with losing your data both Sandisk and Samsung make SSDs with a 10 year warrenty, they're marginally more expensive than non shit tier SSDs and are pretty your best bet other than tapes/dvds/a dickload of drives in raid.
