If not, learn. It sounds (by your own admission) like you have plenty of free time, so you really have no excuse.

If you don't have the mindset for programming, learn another skill, like welding?

Philosophy professor. Around $40,000 a year.

While I'd like a lot more pay, it probably works out great given the flexibility of my hours. So long as I continue to publish, teach, and do the occasional administrative work, I don't even need to be on campus except for the few hours a week that I teach, hold office hours, or need to do some or attend administrative/departmental functions.

And that's for during the semester. I get a bunch of holidays off, and then there's summer where I don't have any teaching responsibilities and therefore very few days where I actually *need* to be on campus.
>>
>>51583361
Besides the fact that a philophy professor is in /g/, is it really nesscesary to publish anything when you're a professor? I mean, your work is teaching isn't it? so why?
>>
>>51578305

Now I loiter around the house, perform cheep labor, and try to get jobs.

>>51583414

My work also includes publishing and keeping up to date with the latest research. And it's more than just that my two functions as a professor are to publish and teach, but that my research makes me a better teacher. There's something suspect about a professor teaching students who isn't actively contributing back to the field. It's that active contribution which reaffirms that the professor is a competent scholar through them publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Programmer at a big tech co, 32yo, 350k/yr.

Between working out and helping my wife care for our daughter, most of my extra time is eaten up.

>>

>>
>>51583574

It's not any different compared to any other field. People work on various specialized problems that they're interested in.

Most of my own work is in mathematical logic, and a lot of my current work is developing and analyzing formal logics with the intention of discovering something that would permit for a new consistency proof of arithmetic.

I also do work in political philosophy. There's some amount of debate going on at the moment about whether a modeling procedure, called the Original Position, developed by John Rawls, justifies a certain conception of political justice that Rawls advocated for. Someone has recently argued in a paper that this debate has missed the mark thus far. That the disagreement isn't over the application of this modeling procedure, but is instead over some underlying moral assumptions that instead lead to certain conceptions of political justice. This paper has actually left me in a bind. I had a similar argument to give in response to this debate, but now I'm having to go back and see how my argument differs from theirs and see if there's anything work salvaging.
>>
>>51583718
Interesting. How does the funding for non-applied/theory stuff work anyway? Do actually write grants?
>>
>>51583684
I don't want to believe that's a serious amount. If it is: What do you do? What is your job/edu history? Any advice?
>>
>>51583768
Software development, I've bounced around teams a lot. Graduated from an OK but not amazing engineering school in 2005. Moved to bigco in 06.

There are a lot of people pulling in more than me in similar situations but probably don't hang out on 4chan.

My only advice is to network/hang out w/ successful people to help get in somewhere good. And learn people skills.
>>
>>51583746

Yeah. I don't know how grants work for maybe the hard sciences where maybe you've got specimens, equipment, and a lot of labor to pay for.

But we write grant applications to cover things from small things like organizing a small conference to big things like getting hired out for some number of summers/courses in order to devote research to a particular problem.

>>
>>51584268
If you have no hope for obvious connections at school, get known as sharp among peers so they want to refer you if they get lucky.

Failing that, go into industry as soon as you're done and don't take less than the 100-120k a new grad is worth in major markets.

Avoid grad school.

>>51584418

>>
I'm going to graduate in a couple weeks with a Bachelor's in IT. Haven't had any intern/professional experience unfortunately. I try to program and do junk in most of my off time. Prof has me doing some data science/analysis stuff for my capstone project. I enjoy it.

Going to go back for a master's this spring, why not, parents said they'll pay for it which I am thankful for, they're not rushing to kick me out either. To boot my prof said if I want in he'll waive a lot of the requirements since he's worked with me quite a bit.

The only thing is I'm going to have to move somewhere else for employment, because the job outlook here is shit. Local gov't and military jobs are boring as fuck and all deal with the shit I hate or don't care about at all. Blows.

Though every couple weeks I get real mopey and sad, feels like the past few years have just been a giant waste and I'm just shitty at everything I try.

Is this for grade school or undergrad? If you want a career in academia, then prestigious schools absolutely matter. But you could quite easily just do your undergrad wherever and then go to a great grad school if you want academia.

Otherwise, just stick to UTD. It doesn't matter in the real world much. Especially not for CS.
>>
>>51587438
Do you feel like it's harder to get into software development with an EE degree?
>>
>>51578305
work in cybersec
>yes
I would suck ween to be a webapp pentester or an RE gig that isn't for the govt.
>>
>>51587448
>grade
Woops grad*
>>
>>51587448
Undergrad. I'm not looking to go further for MS or PhD. Just worried about job prospects when it comes to companies out of state or the big 4s who might not have heard of UTD or have bias for higher ranked schools
>>
>>51587455
Possibly.

My manager has an EE degree. My managers managers manager has a masters or PHD (forgot which) in EE. So that's says something.

It's not ideal, but its a difficult engineering degree so that helps. Having an EE + some personal projects + Software internship pretty much guarantees you a good job out of college. Plus most software internships will consider you as an EE student as long as you have some exposure to programming.
>>
>>51587508
Chances are very high that your school won't matter much for job prospects, what'll matter more is the experience you accrue during school (internships and such)
>>
>>51587508
It's not worth going 40k in debt just to make you education look a little better on paper. If you get practical experience while you're in school, then the school you go to doesn't matter at all.

apple aha and i hate it.

bought a few udemy courses this past week since everything was $12/$15

the plan is to try and teach myself web dev as quickly as possible and try to land a junior dev position instead of suck ass phone support.

whats an average time frame id be looking at before those positions actually become a possibility? im thinking of dropping down to part time as well so i can have more time just building projects.

I started my bachelors at 27 and at 31 I will graduate with a distinction. I don't know if anyone will hire me, I have maturity and experience of many things. At least I will try. Giving up is never an option. What is done is done. Fuck self doubt.
>>
>>51587757
Don't pay for udemy, they're stealing and repackaging people's courses themselves
>>
>>51587757
Oh dude, I was Apple AHA too for a while a few years ago, and I know your feel, I hated it too. Good luck and godspeed moving on to something better

College Student.
I can barely find motivation to study/do coursework, suck at math, and the professors think I should be a code monkey.
Does life get better after you graduate?

honestly anon, if you hate it now, you're gonna hate it in the future. It may be worth it to take a hard look at what you want to do with your career. Not saying that in a mean way, just that you should do something that makes you happy and brings you fullfilment

I only make around 150k a year at this point, but there's nearly no ceiling and I do nothing most days.

Side question: I just hooked up my 5 year old H70 to my 980 on one of those kraken brackets. Is the loop still good or has the water evaporated?

What do you have on there? Advice?
>>
>>51588377
Yeah, go to your campus's career center for help putting together your resume, and actually have stuff to put on there. I went to a resume workshop, and the big take-away I got from there was structure your resume in two parts: claims and evidence

In your claims section, you list your skills, your objective, and the rest. And for every claim you make (eg. Skilled in C++) you have evidence to back it up (eg. used C++ as part of a project, or at a previous job).

Make sure to list EVERY technology you've ever used as a skill. One of the things that caught one employer's eye was experience with an automated testing library called Sikuli.

And, at least when you're in school, grades do count. If you have a good GPA, then list it. I have a 3.8 gpa, and that caught a lot of attention at the job fair

a GPA only matters with no internships and weak project history.

Every job, project, contract, etc I've been on no one has given a single fuck about what my GPA was. They never even asked. Just "did you get a degree in CE? When?"
They all cared about my previous projects quite a bit.

Comp engineering associate right now. Not sure what direction I want for a bachelor's degree. Working as a technician right now for $20/hour. Job is fun and they'll pay for my certs.

>>51588564
I guess just be memorable when meeting the recruiter. When at the job fair, after handing off the resume I stuck around for a little bit, asked questions about their company, made some jokes and stuff. Sorry I don't really have any real advice, just be memorable when meeting the recruiter, have a solid resume (your career center can help you with that) and the recruiters will find you. Really all I did was hand in the resume, and the companies all reached out to me after that

>>51588638
Yes, projects and previous experience matter more. BUT, in my experience talking with recruiters at workshops and stuff, gpa is something they look at especially if you're still a student

Full time student, bio major. I tutor intro bio for about 300 bucks a semester, which I proceed to throw at watches and other technology.
I'm actually very depressed. I'm surrounded by cunt pre-meds that I completely hate, having basically no friends (just acquaintances and shit) and my major is worthless if I don't get into dental school.
I'm thinking of just doing pharmacy school. I'll get to skip my senior year and i'll be debt free by 27 (compared to ~35 if I go to dental school)
Should I do it guys?
My dream job is being a unix sysadmin where I get paid to use a few basic commands and maintain a server, but that ship has sailed long ago.
>>
>What do you do?
Senior CS student. I can't wait until I finish school.

>School? Work? Current situation?
I don't work, but I did an internship in QA. It was so much fun. And easy. And the stress was low. For the occasional income, I do extras/background acting for TV shows and whatnot. I haven't got many calls lately because a) I'm not part of the acting union and b) There's not many things filming in my city in the winter. In the summer I got like 3-4 calls per week, in the fall I got at least one per week, but now that it's colder rI haven't gotten a single call in like 3 weeks.
My current situation is pretty okay. I don't have the best study habits, but only recently did I start getting my shit together. I'm doing research for a lab at school and it's a lot more boring than working in actual industry. There's not as much demand in terms of work that they ask me to do, and the stress is low, but it's really boring. I can't wait until i graduate. After I get a job I really want to take evening acting classes. I really wanna be on a commercial. I also want to get my private pilot license so that I can fly.
I also want to find a way to be confident in myself. Lately my social anxiety as been pretty bad (entirely my fault; haven't been doing my exposure exercises) and I just want to be able to go a day doing my usual stuff without having my anxiety tell me that I'm in way over my head. My mom also suffers from anxiety, and I want to help her as much as I can, somehow, but I don't really know how I can do that other than just being there for her.
Eventually I want to move to the city (I live in a suburb right now with my family), but my family is quite persistent on us all living together until we die (I think this is a cultural thing). Some of them want to move farther from the city (+15 minutes away) because housing would be cheaper. I understand where they're coming from. But I don't want to move farther. Not sure how that's going to play out.

Military baby. I've enlisted with a ton of older guys basically in your situation, and they all have done great stuff. Plus, steady pay and job opportunities that'll blow your socks off.

I work on equipment that ATC uses to interact with planes. Make roughly 2k a month, and government pays for my housing. Pretty sweet gig.

>Haven't graduated yet
Then you should be doing internships unless this is your last quarter.

You'll get paid less going into a job fresh out of school vs. having some references from internships.
>>
>>51588731
You sound pretty rad, anon. I'm a cs student and have been doing flight lessons also.

How did you get involved in bg/extra work?

In job interviews no one gives a fuck what your GPA was or what the name of your super difficult class taught by your once relevant in the industry teacher was.

>How did you get involved in bg/extra work?
I don't remember how it all started, but I do recall seeing an ad for the new Star Wars movie. They were doing some filming in my city and had an open call for background actors, so whoever wanted to be a background actor had to show up to location X at Y o'clock, and hopefully, if you were the first Z people to arrive, you got the part. Unfortunately I had a midterm that week so I couldn't make it.

So I did more googling and it turns out that there's an acting agency dedicated to background acting in my area. Production companies reach out to them for available background actors and extras, and then they contact you if there's an opening and you seem like a good fit. I think since I'm not part of a union, I'm just one of the last minute replacements for other extras that can't make it a few days before filming.

I really recommend it. It's so much fun, and you're paid too! The long hours are the hardest part, as well as the early mornings or late nights. Other than that, I totally recommend it!

Are you planning on getting your PPL?
