My friend who is a music producer invested on a 2015 rMBP which was too slow and laggy, I suggested him to build a Hackintosh, He right now has a Core i5 4440 CPU, 8 Gigs of RAM and a Gigabyte Motherboard and 2 SSDs and a couple of mechanical HDDs' which he use to store VSTs'. However though, he is running Mavericks on integrated Intel GPU, which is too sluggish for his workflow. He is confused as to whether to get a Nvidia GT 640 or a more powerful one which would work out of the box with OS X and please no AMD Cards. Any suggestions?

You say no AMD cards, yet they would actually be better for a hackintosh as macs use them.
Basically any post nvidia Fermi GPU running on any version of OSX after Mountain Lion will work OOB, so just get whatever is in his price range.
I heard Nvidia has a better chance of running OOB and he is more of an Nvdia guy.
