Shit.

It's no worse than Java when it gets going really, but getting going is the deal breaker for me. Waiting 5-6 seconds for every program to run just takes the piss, and makes the REPL nearly useless. I could compile and run in the same amount of time.

Every language is shit. What we need is if we can get shit done or not.
>>
>>51573255
It's MUCH slower than java, by up to 2 orders of magnitude and typically 1 order of magnitude. It also typically takes up between 2 and 5x as much memory for the same task.

Not really interested in it.

I started using it, sure, but Scala suits me better. Also what the big companies use more, if that matters to you.

I tried learning scala but dat shit felt too much for me. Soo many fucking things to learn
>>
>>51573400
It's fucked up that people use scala given how broken it is.
>>
>>51573386
I don't understand , I thought after compiling to byte code ...java code and clojure code will have the same performance. I thought it's only different how you write them.

Not simple, right.

>>51573432
Everything but maybe Haskell and some simple languages is quite badly broken, generally speaking. And with Haskell and the simple languages most people don't know how to do things *right*.

Well, if the broken-ness not in the language, then you'll see it in the software dem enterprises use.

Scala is less bad than average if you ask me, YMMV.

>>51573469
There's a difference between "shit" (java, C#, C) and broken (scala, julia, guile). Broken means you can't know if a problem comes from a bug in the language or your code, and you can't expect that differently segemented execution segments output the same thing (e.g. in scala, the translation of a = map(thing); reduce(a); does not output the same thing as the translation of reduce(map(thing))).

That's not how compilation works.

Play with it because you're interested in it, not because you think there's a future for the language. Very often you end up with one or more languages that are a labor of love, and not anything at all you do for work. That's OK, they teach you a lot, you learn a lot, and most importantly you have fun with them.

Plenty of people learn brainfuck and even piet. They don't get jobs with them, but writing them is fun, and teaches you amazing ways of thinking.
