So it's time for me to find a new monitor and I'm in search for a 24" 144hz monitor under $350. I'm stuck between these two that have been recommended to me and I'm not sure which one to get.

>BenQ XL2411Z (Amazon has it for $313, Newegg has it for $249 for some reason)

>ASUS VG248QE (Amazon has it for $209, huge price difference compared to the Benq)

Which would you recommend?
>>
>>51573088
The BenQ one is apparently really good. I don't own it myself, but but a lot of ppl said so.
>>
>>51573231
That's definitely the one I'm leaning towards.

>>51574208
Looks fine to me. Decent price so don't expect any nice gimmicks you get from a £500 monitor. Obviously it's not really future proofed so look for a 144hz monitor for your next one.

Sprang for this from the black friday thread, but not certain if the order go through as it's on hold at the moment. Apparently has some input lag issues, so may not be the best choice for replacing my main monitor for gaymin, but damn it should look nicer.

Still on the lookout for decent 1440p deals. Wish I could've got that Acer XG270HU for 300 bux

How are LG for monitors?
>>
Bit of a stupid question but if I don't play above 60fps is 144Hz even worth it?
>>
>>51577743
nope 144hz is to play in 144fps if you limit your frames to 60fps there are no benefits to get a 144hz.go get ips over 144hz
>>
>>51577743
Of course not.

What kind of perfomance loss can be suffered from switching to 2560x1080 from 1920x1080 on the average game?

I'm about to grab a PC that can very well handle shit at 1080p, but I'm not sure about that ultrawide resolution.

Okay thanks, so something like >>51574208 would be perfect for general gaming at 60fps?
>>
>>51578070
I wouldn't say perfect, but it doesn't seem bad.

Check the reviews on it and see if you're willing to take the plunge.
>>
>>51577890
Expect a small decrease. Not as much as say going to 2560x1440, but you may have to knock AA down a notch or turn down a bit of lighting in most games. It shouldn't be that bad of a hit, provided you have a good gpu.

What GPU does the pc have?

I bought a Lenovo Thinkvision off of ebay recently.

It's pretty nice, but I must say the matte coating on the monitor is a little too overdone for my taste. When you're watching videos it can make things look a bit grainy.
>>
>>51578244
Planning to buy an r9 380.

I'm ok with lowering settings, I'm used to play with no AA at all.
>>
>>51577743
Nah just stick to a 60Hz monitor if you never plan on going over 60fps. Most people who use 144Hz just play CS:GO and other online FPS where it might actually matter.
Also if you were wondering about 5ms or 1ms, there is hardly any difference and are pretty much just marketing words.

this thread is very relevant.

i'm throwing a couple of cables through a small hole to my bedroom, there's only room for maybe two HDMI / DP cables and one USB 3 cable, so I need to make it count.

with a budget of roughly 500 yurobucks, is a 4k 60hz setup doable (only have a GTX 950 right now)? i'm also open to ultrawide options since I like the format, anyone in a similar predicament and knows what's what?

currently looking at too many options and can't choose myself.

the plan is to eliminate fan /hdd noise in the bedroom and enjoy quality audio using an usb dac setup.

pretty picture unrelated
>>
>>51578439
Yea you'll be fine senpai
>>
>>51573088
Are both of those TN panels?

if yes then i would recommend none
>>
I'm not sure which one to get:
>24'' 1080p 144hz
or
>27'' 1440p 144hz (a LOT more expensive)

How well does the R9 390 handle 1440p monitors? I mainly play FPS (multiplayer) games, so I'm not sure if 1440p is even worth the huge price.
>>
>>51579544
If you play FPS multiplayer games to a serious degree than you'd want speed over it looking nice. I'd say go for the former if you don't plan on playing other games.
>>
>>51573088
I just got a 1440p Asus. It's got 5Ms response though. I don't play games too much, so i don't really care. It's fucking amazing.

>>
So correct me if I'm wrong.
>TN
Good for serious gaming because they have better response times
>IPS
Better for anime/film/light gaming, generally look better
>144Hz
Only if you plan on playing at 140fps which would be games like FPS and other comp games
>60Hz
Used for average gaming like RPGs and non FPS games.

And is the difference between 5ms and 1ms noticeable or is it just a meme buzzword used to sell monitors.
>>
>>51579597

>>
>>51579662
>TN

good viewing angles, amazing colors but not as fast as TN, canonly do 60hz for now. but keep in mind that IPSs dont have problems with input lag, its the same as TNs

this guy here agian,
what do you think of this one?

http://www.lg.com/de/monitore/lg-34UB67-B
>>
>>51579795
meh, still not really. those mostly measure how quickly pixels can change from color to color, not latency. high response time prevents what's called ghosting, but if it's anything under 10ms I wouldn't worry about it
>>
>>51579818
TN and IPS are the most popular panels nowadays. TN has slightly worse colors and viewing angles, but can more easily accommodate high refresh rates and low response times. This is why most high refresh rate monitors you see are TN. This is changing, but slowly.
>>
>>51579891
So TN monitors really aren't that bad the guy who said it is just nit picky? I'm just looking for a step up from my 6 year old 21.5" asus monitor with 3 dead pixels.

The Benq has been extremely highly rated from what I've seen. OP here btw.
>>
>>51579977
they're not terrible. There's definitely a difference, IPS definitely beats it, but it's not a huge deal, TN's can still look very nice. If you have the money, get the BenQ, it's a better monitor than the Asus.
>>
>>51580038
Thank you very much. Just out of curiousity, how much more expensive would an IPS monitor be and which would you recommend?

>buy 4k monitor
>Windows scaling is still shit
>>
>>51578639
Right. 144hz updates every 6.9444 ms so as long as it's faster than that you're good. Even 60hz updates every 16.666 ms so a 10ms update time is fine. If you are faster than your refresh rate you are just a gimmick
>>
>>51580578
you clearly have no idea what response time means in terms of monitors. what you're talking about would be relevant if it measured latency. response time in monitors usually measures how long it takes for a pixel to change color
>>
How bad is the IPS glow in the 2515h? I'm debating between it and the 2414, and a worse IPS glow seems to be one of the differences.
>>
>>51580522
depends what you're doing with it. If you're playing competitive fps games like CSGO or something, you want 144hz. If not, IPS is probably a better choice.
>>
Is it true the black levels of VA panels are better than TN and IPS. What are the drawbacks of V A panels then?
>>
>>51580837
VA have color production somewhere in between IPS and TN, but pretty noticeable ghosting. Not really anything worth considering imo.
>>
>>51580688
Well I do play CSGO quite a bit, so I guess the TN would be better. And you said the Benq would be better than the Asus? That's pretty much my final bump in the road before I make the purchase. $250 dropped from $330+ seems like a nice deal on a 144hz monitor.

sort by price and look again. I found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260340

alternatively, look for any 1080p monitor with VESA mounting capability, and buy a stand off of craigslist (I found one in my area for $10).

This one rotates and costs $120. I've seen monitors with fixed stands (but that have VESA mounting plates) for ~100, so you could put the monitor and monitor arm together for $110 when all is said and done.

>>

right. amazon, craigslist, ebay, and microcenter. any others? tiger direct? Fry's? add those too.

these sites all have similar interfaces. you just run through the same process on each site and look at the first few results sorted by price. compare the most competitive results on each site and go with the cheapest option.

Are you asking if there are online stores you didn't know about?
>>
>>51590606

Right. I don't want a refurbished monitor, but a used one would suit my needs perfectly.

>>51590617

>these sites all have similar interfaces.

They don't, actually. Pick a random monitor on Amazon and try to see if you can swivel it into portrait. Have fun searching through user questions and reviews.

>Are you asking if there are online stores you didn't know about?

Yes. I am also suggesting that someone in this thread might just happen to know of a cheap monitor for sale that suits my needs.
>>
>>51590645
>I don't want a refurbished monitor, but a used one would suit my needs perfectly.
is this sarcasm? refurbished monitors are used monitors that had defects fixed by the manufacturer.

>they don't, actually
various filters on the left hand side. Prices on the right hand side. Sorting options at the top right. Search bar at the top.

>>51590645
>I don't want a refurbished monitor, but a used one would suit my needs perfectly.
A refurbished monitor is one that has been damaged and then repaired, a used monitor is one that was fine and therefore kept.
>>
I'm getting the BenQ xl2430t look that one up is a little expensive but it's great
>>
>>51590716

Do you really expect me to do that for every decent looking monitor on craigslist?

For fucks sake, stop with this "hurr stop asking questions on 4chan and just learn how to use the Internet" bullshit. I know how to use the Internet. I'm looking for insider info, personal recommendations, etc.
>>
>>51590693
I said earlier that you could get a monitor mount for around $10. It's a safe bet that no monitor with a rotating stand will come without VESA mounting plates; VESA plates are prevalent on lower end monitors as well as higher end ones, but rotating stands tend to be exclusive to mid-range and higher end monitors.

So buy a monitor mount and the cheapest vesa-capable monitor you can find. "vesa" is easy enough to add to a search query, and newegg and some other sites even offer it as a spec filter.

This is the cheapest way to get a portrait orientation monitor - by getting a dirt cheap one with a mounting plate and mounting it onto as cheap a stand as you can find.

>>
>>51590716
>A refurbished monitor is one that has been damaged and then repaired, a used monitor is one that was fine and therefore kept.
This is actually not entirely true. A refurbished device sold by the manufacturer was definitely faulty in some way, but definitely repaired to some standard. Maybe that standard is shit, but it's reasonable to assume that shit QC in the refurb department would mean shit QC across the board. In other words, if Dell were selling refurbished products that were still defective, you could bet that their new products would be just as likely to be lemons.

On the other hand, a used product is a crap shoot. If you buy from someone on craigslist, there's nothing guaranteeing that the device is in good shape. You're just inferring that they used the device and that they were happy with it, but they might have used it, broken it in some subtle way (or maybe found it was defective all along), and figured it'd be less trouble to sell it to some unsuspecting person on craigslist or eBay than to try and get it repaired by the company that manufactured it.

my point is that refurbs and used products should be viewed with some skepticism, but refurbs are inherently less dodgy because they've at least been through the manufacturer's revolving door.
>>

>Do you really expect me to do that for every decent looking monitor on craigslist?
craigslist has a button to pop directly into email. from there you just write (or copy/paste)
>Hey, saw your monitor on craigslist and i'm interested. is it still available? Would you be willing to sell for $N-20? I could come over and buy it in the next few days if you're interested. thanks in advance

>>51590808

I am being trolled at this point.
>>
>>51590790
there are several. the one pictured would clamp onto the edge of a table, but you can find stands for pretty cheap as well. Do what >>51590808 mentioned and haggle. Nobody buys things for list price on craigslist - or at least they don't accept the price without question. Always ask if they'll go lower.
>>
>>51590828

I found a couple free-standing VESA mounts on Amazon, but they are about $35. The ones I'm finding at retail shops are considerably more expensive.
>>
>>51590839
I'm not suggesting craigslist to shill for them or something. You don't need to buy a pipe with a vesa mounting bracket brand new. you can buy those used. and again, importantly, you can haggle over the price. I bet if I contacted this guy and he hasn't sold the mount yet I could get him down to $5.
>>

What about this on a 770?
>>
>>51590855

Dude, I know how to use craiglist. I searched and there aren't any locally anyway. I don't live in a heavily populated area.
>>
>>51590867
>Dude, I know how to use craiglist
it would really help me if you could demonstrate that rather than act in such a way that makes you seem naive, forcing me to explain all this shit, only for you to say "oh no I knew all that".

Search further away, proportionate to your willingness to drive out of town. Alternatively, look on eBay. There are still small time sellers there, and you can make an offer/bid for items.
>>
>>51590893

Not my fault you interpreted my "hey can you link me some cheap monitors" question as "please teach me how to use the Internet".

Anyway, I found this. Seems like it's what I need.

>>51590921
>Not my fault
you offered us no starting point, and i didn't have any reason to think that you had explored eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, or even the idea of buying a monitor separate from its stand. at every post, you responded with an ungrateful retort that i was wasting your time by trying to help you, but again added nothing to tell me what you'd considered doing.

this waste of my time was your fault, but i'll admit that i should have stopped trying to humor you much earlier. it was naive optimism that you were anything more than an ungrateful piece of shit.
>>
>>51590400
No I really doubt you'll notice the difference if you don't actively look for it. Same idea with wanting to buy £700 headphones but you only listen to MP3s. Pretty much any IPS monitor nowadays is fine with anything.
>>
>>51590947

>this fucker browses /g/ and uses two monitors, but I bet he's never heard of eBay and doesn't know how to use craigslist!

Thanks for the VESA idea, friend.
>>
>>51590967
1) your original post suggested you had 1 monitor and were looking at getting a second.
2) i've seen people on /g/ who were honestly as hopeless as you seemed. you're anonymous, and there's no reason for me to think that you know any more than those people. if you want people to respect that you have some base level of intelligence, go find a forum or accept that you'll need to be upfront with the prior research you've done right at the start.

I don't have AMD tho, does it make much of a difference with the freesync thingy?
>>
>>51591427

It just means you won't be able to use that feature (unless Nvidia happens to release a Freesync driver). Freesync doesn't really add to the price, nor does it negatively effect the monitor in any other way, so don't worry about it.
>>
>>51591427
Yes it does! by supporting Freesync (voting with your wallet) you make a consumer move and support better and more open design than Nvidia's G-Sync.

>>
>>51591525
G-sync and Freesync are virtually the same thing. They both use VESA Adaptive Sync, which is a standard spec for new monitors and was recently added to DP. Nvidia just decided that they wanted to try to spin the feature as their own. AMD responded with their own brand name out of necessity to show that they also support the feature.

They both do the same thing. You're unlikely to ever notice any difference because VESA took care of the spec, not Nvidia or AMD (though AMD works with VESA, so if anything, AMD's implementation might be better, but I doubt it).
>>
>>51592160
>VESA Apaptive Sync.
Isn't this with Display Port?

Do AMD GPUs support V-AS? I mean if I have non-FreeSync -yet- VESA standard screen it can match fps and frame rate?

What about NVidia?
>>
>>51592185
>Isn't this with Display Port?
Yes. Both Gsync and Freesync require DP.

>Do AMD GPUs support V-AS
>What about Nvidia
VESA supplied the specification. It was up to AMD and Nvidia to implement it on their GPUs. AMD wanted to create an open standard for the tech, Nvidia wanted to make it proprietary. This has forced consumers to choose which monitors they want to buy, even though the tech itself has the potential to work on any graphics card with any monitor.

At this time, you must choose one or the other.
>>
>>51592280

Jesus Christ both companies are full jew.
At least FreeSync doesn't add 200euros more to the screen prize (or with the new PG279 Asus, 350euros)

Read reviews, they say same fucking panel, but G-Sync puts fucking 350 euros on top of the fucking monitor with same guts Jesus Christ
>>
>>51592319
>>51592185
I had another look, and it appears that Nvidia supports generic VESA Adaptive Sync. This essentially means that Nvidia supprorts Freesync.

The downside is that with VESA Adaptive Sync, you don't get per monitor optimizations like you would from Gsync or Freesync-- VAS will always have ghosting issues, for example. Gsync currently does the best job dealing with ghosting, as Nvidia optimizes for individual monitors much faster than AMD does, similar to how Nvidia releases driver updates to optimize for new games.
>>
>>51592445
so is it automatic? I got 980Ti and MG279Q and it comes with 1x DisplayPort 1.2.(FREESYNC monitor tho)
>>
>>51592486
You probably have to turn it on in the Nvidia control panel, but any Freesync monitor is capable of generic Adaptive Sync and the Nvidia website says it's supported.

Whichever is cheaper. If they're the same price, I'd go with the Dell panel as it's IPS. The Samsung panel is PLS, so it has a tiny advantage for gaming, but won't look quite as nice.
>>
>>51591289
Monitors with these specs are getting dirt cheap so just pick up something with good reviews. I have an LG screen with those specs and it's fine for pretty much what I do.
>>

You want high hz 1080p since its cheap and you can get great gaymen with it since most gpus can do more than 60fps @ 1080p these days
>>
Hey guys

anyone got the ASUS 27" IPS 144hz Freesync monitor?

Is IPS really that much better than a high end TN these days? I only ask because I have an gtx 970 and the gsync version of this monitor is £250 more...

should I just go for it anyway? or are freesync and gsync really good enough to sell my nvidia and get amd?
>>
>>51592759
While that's true. I tend to have my games maxed out so they bounce around 60~70 fps. Maybe in a few years when graphics starts to slow down and devs stop with the dynamic lighting meme I'll invest in a 144Hz but for now I'll get no use out of it.
>>
>>51580997

Realize I'm responding a day late, but I have a VA panel on my Samsung laptop. Most of the time it looks beautiful and saturated like a good OLED screen. But certain transitions from light to dark result in persistence that can last 10 to 15 seconds and looks like old school CRT burnin. It usually only noticeable when I'm switching from a full screen Web page to a game, I'll see the search bar and menu for a little bit as its loading.

It's not horrible and doesn't seem to affect games or movies at all. Black levels are vastly better than even a good TN panel
>>
>>51592856

>>
>>51592856
TN has dick for colors IRL. The Asus TN screens (27" gaymen) are so bad looking IRL in comaprison to their 27" IPSs.

What monitor will torture my eyes as little as possible? How should a monitor be set-up for minimal eye-strain?

Just for text, charts, websites and so on.
No gaming, movies or anything fancy.

Thank you (very) much.
>>
>>51595918
Flicker-free monitor. Monitors usually market this, but some don't but are still flicker free. Google around if your monitor of choice is flicker-free. Means basically when you dim the brightness down the level of light stays stable and it doesn't flicker with varying power.

A backlight that can go extremely dark (low light level) - some LED backlights don't go very dim/dark.

Either change settings in the monitor that turns the image bit warm, yellow/brownish - or use that actual program that does it.

Does price pay a mayor role in this? Meaning: will dishing out more instead of choosing an entry level flicker-free screen aid further? Do panel types or refresh rates influence eye-strain?
>>
>>51596325
Flicker free is flicker free there isn't a slider

it is or isn't flicker free.

Panel types affect how low can the brightness go so that clearly influences your eye strain since if you cant get it low enough in low lit conditions it will strain them more.

Just read some of the reviews from TFTcentral to grasp what a good monitor should do. That helped me a lot.

I have had that asus since last black friday. It's alright and runs 144hz fine. Although I will say that sometimes (probably like 10% of the time) when I turn it on, I get this weird blue haze. I'll have to turn the monitor off and wait a few seconds and turn it back on and usually it goes away. My older monitor is also an asus and that one I think I got on black friday in 2011. It took them sending me 3 monitors to get me a non DOA monitor. I used that monitor as one of three in my setup up until a couple of weeks ago when the backlight stopped working on it. That monitor now sells for like $100 on sale. Meanwhile I have an old school samsung that just keeps on truckin.
Seems like asus has issues with quailty control.

This year I ordered a 27" acer 1440p monitor on black friday to replace that dead asus. We'll see how it works.

Honestly I'd probably get the BenQ.
