Mass surveillance != 42. Crypto backdoors are harmful to society. Security through obscurity is never the answer. Don't allow the NSA or other government agencies to implement another Clipper chip or Dual_EC_DRBG. Sign the petition now: https://cms.fightforthefuture.org/paris/

idk if these are the same person, but I use compton too. You define the drop offset from the top and left. If they're the same value with no blur, they come out like I have them.

shadow-radius = 0;
in compton-conf makes them not blur.

While I think most people would agree that government surveillance problems are out of hand or even outright illegal, those programs were created as the answer to a specific (if too broad) set of problems, so I think your phrasing is alarmist and misleading.

I think the literary reference isn't helping your cause much, either, since you're only reaching people involved in "geek culture" with messaging like that. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is, like, Big Bang Theory-tier. Mass surveillance != bazinga.

>While I think most people would agree that government surveillance problems are out of hand or even outright illegal, those programs were created as the answer to a specific (if too broad) set of problems, so I think your phrasing is alarmist and misleading.
The way they aim to tackle cyber crime is by all means misleading by mist governments. They wish to implement backdoor in cryptography to get a grip of all confidential digital communication if they so desire. The problem however lies in the fact that cryptography is nothing more than mathematics, which is indiscriminate of the actor using/exploiting said backdoor once they know of it. In other words, a criminal could exploit a backdoor in cryptography just as easily.

This is called security through obscurity, and it's a very bad practice as all cryptographers would agree on. Read up on Auguste Kerckhoffs' Principle or Claude Shannon's Maxim if you're interested. I can also recommend browsing the Web for the 'crypto wars' back in the nineties.

>I think the literary reference isn't helping your cause much, either, since you're only reaching people involved in "geek culture" with messaging like that. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is, like, Big Bang Theory-tier. Mass surveillance != bazinga.

A lot of things go into this. Desktop threads almost never actually change, so that's pretty boring in itself. There will be drama here and there but threads from 5 years ago aren't really that different apart from the distinct personalities involved. The user base churns a lot for this reason and the threads are less fun when people you liked start leaving.

>>51565033
I'm not sure what vision mobo has for it long-term, but when Myson established it it was supposed to be a general channel like #/g/lovemovement was back in the day. Topics there usually touched on ricing, anime, games, music, etc. and it was a good place to get to know everyone and keep entertained when the threads were slow or whatever. Somewhat controversially it had rules against lewd content, cursing, and being a dick in general, which kept the quality of conversation high.

But yeah, like I said, I don't know exactly how #lovefort is going to be run if it picks up a user base.

It's not that anyone in the channel would actually have been offended by it. I think everyone involved would curse plenty in their day-to-day lives. It was just a heavy-handed effort to keep the chat from devolving into the chaos of certain other big channels at the time, and to keep out a certain type of person who just believes they can't have a conversation without being able to say nasty shit.

>>51565195
Well, that was #/g/lovemovement which isn't really a thing anymore. I don't think #lovefort has a rule like that spelled out, but the overall spirit of the channel at inception was supposed to be similar.

/g/love was fine until its late days when it got way to strict. Then just because I made a new channel and a few people voiced their opinions the whole channel gets shut down. I really miss the channel though and wish we had a decent sized channel to hang out in again
>>
I think it would be good, if a channel filtered the fuck word to something zany and random, such as "fudge", and so on for other profanities. Bless.
>>
>>51565397
Why though?

Do you really get that easily triggered?
>>
>>51565470
see lainchan
it gives the place character.
makes things less hostile.
>>
>>51565325
There was a core contingent, myself included, who placed a lot of weight on the channel rules. 'No cuss' was kind of a meme but the results kind of spoke for themselves in that #/g/lovemovement was a great channel in its heyday.

In retrospect most of what made #/g/love great was a particular subset of its users, and that trying to rebuild it would never feel the same without those people.

>>51565395
Yeah, Wizmoe flew off the handle at the end because I think he just felt betrayed. I really wish I still had the logs from the final few hours. There was some really intense argument going on.

In the end I have no sympathy for Wizmoe. He's not the person he pretended to be at all.

I was one of the last holdouts who wouldn't move to #pantsumen, and when I did I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it could be at times despite the more lax ruleset. Seaweed gave me and Joe a lot of influence on the channel, but eventually that faded due to personality clashes and the channel devolved into a roleplaying circlejerk, so we split to #cute.
>>
>>51565486
>"it's raining so fucking much right now"
would that really be considered hostile though?

idk, it might be nice to have a curse-free channel, but people would just come up with replacement words anyway

filtering words like t.bh and baka might be a good idea though.
>>
>>51565545
>baka

>>51565527
doesn't have to be the same. might end up being better.
>>
>>51565545
>idk, it might be nice to have a curse-free channel, but people would just come up with replacement words anyway
That doesn't change anything unless the moderation is handled by a bot. If people work around your rules, you punish them anyway.

>filtering words like t.bh and baka might be a good idea though
#/g/lovemovement also had a strict "No /b/-havior" rule
>>
>>51565397
>>51565470
>>51565486
I think it's a bad idea meant to solve a virtually non-existent problem. I've been in multiple uncensored IRCs, and unless it's some youth-oriented channel like "L337 GAMUR NATION" there's really no reason to censor what people can say.
A better rule is "No harassment", which is enforced on pretty much every site, game etc. that has a social aspect to it.
Cussing someone out is considered harassment, so ban for that and you can keep things civil without censoring the people who aren't trying to be offensive.
>>
>>51565545
>but people would just come up with replacement words anyway
exactly.
character.
>>
>>51565570
>If people work around your rules, you punish them anyway.
true.

>"No /b/-havior" rule
this is actually a good rule, #lovefort should use it if it isn't already

Yea even I thought pantsumen got pretty lame after awhile. I tried to tell wizbro that I only made the channel to talk to people like miles and lolimaster who got banned but he still took it as an act of hostility. I didn't leave the channel until everyone got kicked, I never wanted to cause a split or anything I just wanted a chill relaxed place. He also pretty much blamed me for anything bad people from pantsumen said to him. I don't want another /g/love I just want a nice and comfy place to idle or 'observe" in that has a somewhat large userbase.

It felt pretty shitty when I logged in one day to see me and seaweed lost all our powers in the channel. He really did show us his true colors that day
>>
>>51565470
>>51565486
>>51565571
I was not actually being serious; I was attempting to make light of the "no cursing rule" by comparing it to the notably Fail technique, of wordfilters. However, the word "triggered" should be an insta-kick. That's what I think. however, I also think that IRC channels are a poor idea, as offsites are inevitably infested with the aforementioned fail.

>>
>>51565571
The type of people that a no curse rule protects against would probably be banned for other reasons anyway.
>>
>>51565571
The intent of the rule is a bit more roundabout than that. It keeps out people who refuse to restrain themselves for any reason, someone you don't want in a place where your role is to impose order.

A rule against cursing might be annoying when you're particularly upset or something, but it's ultimately a very easy rule to follow and you can think of it as the price of entry to a channel with a slightly higher maturity baseline.

>>51565678
Yeah, I know #pantsumen was never intended to be another #/g/love, which is why I was torn on it. I wanted #/g/love, but I was done with Wizmoe. It sucks that your channel ended up going to shit, but I guess it's inevitable given a long enough timeline (I blame Seaweed too).
>>
Im salvaging the parts from an optiplex 780 and building a mid range gaming rig. The psu is only 235 watts, The video card i'm putting is recommended for use with at least a 350 watt psu. Would it fuck anything up if I keep the weaker psu in?

Yea seaweed was cool sometimes but sometimes he was a bit to much. But I have a really high tolerance for bad users and "cancerous" behavior. That's what made me a terrible admin, I wouldn't ban or kick anyone.

>>51565735
I think the no cursing rule should of been a "no toxic behavior" rule instead

That's how you end up with a very small channel. I like small, private communities and that's what I founded #cute for. But I also like having a larger, general channel to at least idle in. Activity is nice.

>>51565782
Yeah, how you moderate is your prerogative as the founder and admin. But I think that approach only works on a certain scale. #pantsumen was too large for that kind of laissez-faire moderation.

>>51565826
That's what it effectively was. It cut down on moderation effort through a preventative approach. If someone came in, cursed, and then made a scene about the rules, it was taken as an early predictor of toxic behavior.

The correct method of moderation is complete anarchy save for obviously unpleasant individuals, followed by frequent and whimsical bans as the channel grows. Look how much people loved WT Snacks for years after his departure.

This is the i3-gaps branch. I assume since you're a linux noob, you won't be going into Arch, so you'll have to install from the github fork (which is actually pretty easy). The music player/visualizer comes from ncmpcpp + mpd (which will be somewhat harder to get working based on the struggles I hear from others).

I'm using Ubuntu myself as well, but I've tried a lot of other distros (most notably Arch and Debian) and I'd say Ubuntu is definitely one of the more noob-friendly distros. Use it until you're comfortable with the nuances of being a *nix user. http://distrowatch.com/ gives a list of pretty much all the "big" distros, so if you want a good idea of what each does, that's the place to go.
