If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

Postan.

I have EXTREMELY poor performance with Firefox on XFCE. Chromium runs just fine, but I hate how gimped Chromium is in terms of functionality. Laptop isn't shit by any stretch, just a Thinkpad X220T.

Anybody have any obvious fixes? it just starts shitting itself extra hard when you have a few tabs open. Hell, it shits itself on one tab. I just get tired of it.

I just uninstalled MATE and installed XFCE over it, but I highly doubt that could be the problem.
>>
I have Debian Jessie.
I have Chromium.

I want Flash or an alternative that will let me play videos at sites that demand flash.

I want Steam.

I've tried a lot of install methods for both things, I never finish them because either it looks like it worked but pages keep telling me I need flash or some error shows up in the middle of the process.

Care to help?

Any of you guys here using keepass? I'm having trouble with it, it works perfectly fine but the UI is fucked. Am I missing a dependency or something? All my other applications look fine. The gtk theme applied in the pic is flat studio dark btw.

I've posted about this before but never got an answer

Using fglrx, applications report using "4.5.13399 Compatibility Profile Context 15.201.1151" rather than "4.4.13399 Core Profile Context 15.201.1151". Will this affect performance and if so how can I fix it?

I say "I wish someone would port btrfs to windows" all the goddamn time, you twat. That and a bunch of other things.

Linux has superior bits of software (building blocks) but lacks a bigger picture (a complete plan). 9001 different fucking distros with minimal real differences, little nitpicky differences in all flavors of every package, different approaches to everything, even different cli syntax for every program, etc etc etc

It's basically a bunch of headless chickens running around. Tasty as fuck for chicken, but in the end still just a bunch of chickens squawking around blindly.

Actually, one of my family members wished they would port openshot to Windows.

Anyhow, this is my question, re-iterated from a previous thread:

The one thing I miss about windows is how I could enter a url into the file-picker and that file would be picked. This is especially useful when I want to post an image from somewhere else on 4chan. Is there anyway I can regain this functionality in GNU?

I've heard plenty of scary stories about it, but in practice it's working just fine. Everything is plenty fast and Time Machine works fine for continuous backups/restoration. I simply never find myself wishing "if only my filesystem was more advanced".

I back up my files continually over the network to an ext4 filesystem on a Linux server, so even if it does suffer a catastrophic filesystem fuckup I can be up and running again quickly.

My current setup:
* Linux for servers
* OSX for desktops
* Windows for video games

>>51560361
It's fine if you don't like the UI, anon, but this is a minority opinion. There's a shitton of UX testing behind it and it shows.

Also, I use the proprietary software because it works well and allows me to work in a productive manner (and relax in an enjoyable manner). It's not an idealogical thing- I do use FOSS where it's legitimately the best option (mpv for video, Transmission for torrents, etc).

Also also, I get sent docx, psd, and other proprietary formats all the time and wouldn't be able to do my job if I had to wrestle with Libreoffice and GIMP.

Luckily most programs on linux are FLOSS, so many people do maintain windows and mac versions of our software. Since they are open-source, anybody can port linux applications to any platform they want! I use a ton of open-source software even on my windows box. It's kickass.
>>
>>51560506
It's my experience that proprietary software is often not the best, but forced on us because other people like you use it.
>>
>>51560572
Both Unity and Gnome work well on touch screens from what I've heard.

How about the response time. If I get a stylus for my touch screen enabled device, would the drivers allow for crisp input, or would it feel laggy?

I'm not sure about that. I feel like that might depend more on the quality and accuracy of the touchscreen rather than the software.

Hey /flt/, I'm considering switching from Mint to something a bit better and Antergos seems really nice.

Is it like Arch but comes with lots of essential packages? I'd love to try Arch but I don't feel like spending a lot of time installing and configuring everything from scratch.

Another thing that I'm interested in Arch/Antergos is pacman. How does it compare to apt-get?

That's literally Arch's only purpose: To be a timesink. You spend hours reading, installing, and configuring and in the end you don't get anything you don't get from using Ubuntu.

So the answer to your question is: Just install Ubuntu.
>>
>>51561169
how does the free software license make it any better? cmon, you've never made any contributions to gimp. if gimp was closed source, i doubt it would affect your user experience at all. i use linux btw, cause windows is trash af.
>>

Debian testing is the next logical step.

Actually plugins on gimp work better than plugins on ps because ps is proprietary. Just look at the dds plugin for ps, it's garbage compared to the one on gimp.

Debian testing is as stable as ubuntu. There is a non-free repo with steam and stuff that you can enable. Or you just use the non-free netinstall. Debian netinstall is easy and offers a lot of choice. It's one of the best installers out there. (I heard opensuses installer is even better though)

need to install nvidia drivers on arch, been following the log of what I did the last 5 tiems but everything just breaks..

cinnamon
nvidia 304xx //GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i

nvidia has been tested with and without nvidia-304xx-libgl, and the mesa libgl.
when done with the mesa ligbl it can sometimes boot to a "usable" desktop but is stuck in software rendering mode.

vesa is the only thing that is working.
nvidia, after start x will either load ot a black screen with or without a mouse.. or it will load the desktop and then freeze.

and advice, solutions, ideas?

Am I getting the hint correctly that most Linux users tend to dislike digital fun (like non free games that are actually there to have a fun and good time with) and anything related to it?
Why not use a GUI? Why not use non free and free software together when there are no issues rising from it (I understand that drivers should be free and not just only binary blobs, but I am talking about software like games or other proprietary things)? As long the base stays free, there is no real reason to dislike non free software. It's also the reason why Apples OSs aren't that bad as most Linux users claim: The kernel is free code and you definetely can feel it. If you can handle a Linux machine, you can easily handle a hackintosh - the money argument doesn't work for me.

I love Linux and I use it primarily but I see more mad non-freesw haters now than ever and I have some doubt that I want to stay in such a negative community. Maybe it will change, maybe I am just not experienced enough, but any input from you would be much appreciated.

Arch/Win7, GTX760/R9 Fury, PCIe passthrough user here.

I feel like quite a few people talk about PCIe passthrough but not many people actually run it daily like I do. It's a bit lonely in that regard.

Any other passthrough brothers?

Hey, I am currently having a problem when trying to boot into any linux distribution using a memory stick. I have tried different ports and none of them work. I usually have the memory stick plugged into a USB 3.0 port at the back of the PC. Here's the errors that usually come up with any distribution. However, even if I do get it to boot into the live USB, my keyboard and mouse don't work. Using the Razer Blackwidow 2014 and the Razer Deatheradder 2014 (pls no uses razer is a faggot replies). Anyways, see pic related and if anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Arch user repository is a bliss. If there is any software written for linux, it's porbably going to be in the AUR. Arch is well documented and is a true user-centric distro. Since you have some experience with a linux distro, Arch is probably the best choice for you. It's fast, highly customizable and efficient.
That said if you are looking for an easy installer,
NEVER FALL FOR ANTERGOS MEME. Use the architect installer. If you are not feeling too confident, even use manjaro to get used to the difference between pacman and apt.

I don't use windows. I just want easy access to a convenient feature. You know, the power of free software and all that. I'm aware of the risks.
>>
>>51564934
>>51565101
Does Architect simply install Arch with a few convenient packages, like a display manager and a desktop environment? Cause that's pretty much all I'd need. Not that installing Arch from scratch would be a problem per se, I am capable of following instructions and using common sense, but it would be really nice if it sped things up a bit.
>>
>>51559900
Check for power saving features (frequency scaling):
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

ondemand: CPU only runs at 100% frequency when it needs to (fast change)
conservative: ondemand with a slower, more conservative change
powersave: lowest frequency always
performance: 100% clock speed all of the time
usespace: define the frequency with some other program

conservative and ondemand are ideal for battery life. sudo nano [FILE] lets you change the governor.

Check for software rendering:
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer string", llvmpipe is bad, AMD/Intel is good, nVidia is bad, but not software rendering

Check for overheating:
if the BIOS changes the CPU frequency, Linux has no control over that and the scaling governor is irrelevant.

cat /proc/cpuinfo
run that when you know the CPU should be using 100% power, and if the frequency doesn't match what is advertised, then you have an overheating problem (unless the frequency governor is powersave or userspace).

Anyways, I'll probably install Arch tomorrow. Thanks for your help Anons

Debian was doing great except for Flash (I installed it properly but Chromium ignored it), getting access to that Windows folder (I tried Samba but it didn't go well) and Steam.
