I never used the "new tab page". Despite setting it to be blank and then replacing it completely with about:blank using Tab Mix Plus, I found out there's a "thumbnails" folder in my Firefox profile directory with screenshots of the pages I open the most often.
The only way to stop this is to add a new entry to about:config:

Click the gear and set it to blank then restart the browser. Apparently firefox can't stop generating thumbnails until you restart, at least that's what I've found.
The newtab page also requires history and cache to be enabled or it wont work.
Also don't be retarded and set the newtab page to about:blank. That doesn't do anything except hide the page its still running as long as you have it enabled. Set it to a blank page.
