why does /g/ hate optical media? I'm the only one hoarding shit to DVD-R?
>>
why not just put your stuff in an external HDD
>>
>>51552287
i don't exactly hate it, it just doesn't seem very useful for storage. not a lot of space, have to constantly swap discs, can't overwrite/delete etc.
the only thing i use CDs/DVDs for is loonix ISOs. they just werk, unlike USB shit.

I use optical for back up. It's slow, but reliable.

Just conducted an audit of the state of my DVD backups, many burned in 2003; all to Verbatim discs, all work 100%.

I back up in triplicate, to minimize risks.
>>
It takes a long time to transfer data.
Transferring to other people is harder as they most likely does not have an optical drive in their laptops.

If you want to store data in a vault for many years, why not just use tape?
>>
>>51552447
how many discs are there in your backup
>>
>>51552494

Not a huge amount, I don't download film/tv

I the region of 150 discs. Some are very old Traxadata CDrs burned in 1998. They too still work fine.
>>
I use optical for long term backup storage.

With dvdisaster and reasonable quality Verbatims, it gives me peace of mind that it will last a while.

I've had two hard disc head crashes, which I have completely recovered from by repopulating a new hdd with the old disc backups.

The one thing I like about optical is how it is immune from 'bit rot', especially now that i use dvdisaster.
(note: bit rot is not just data corruption, which still occurs with optical occasionally, but SILENT data corruption, which typically comes from filesystem, OS and hdd firmware errors not detecting corruption)
>>
its just all pointless really.
I can understand as backups or throwaways type shit.

>Your futile efforts to preserve everything are nothing but a symptom of your inability to accept your own mortality.

Just imagine a life time of pictures taken, or whatever amount of stupid movies/tv shows you're trying to 'save' here.

This guy isn't messing around.

>delete everything now - because we all die anyway...

M-Discs are mineral based and have a guaranteed life span of 1000 years (although, I don't expect to see any lawsuits for a while...).

None of us should be too concerned about our data, the NSA provides everyone with a government backup service for free.

checking out dvdisaster, looks like a neat tool.
>>
>>51552447
I have sampler audio CDs from 1990 that still work great. It largely depends on the quality of the media and how it was stored.
>>
>>51553580
consumer cd-r's didn't exist in 1990, the cd's you're referring to are pressed, which are completely different to cd-r

pressed cd's should last basically forever, because they describe data with a physically impressed sheet of aluminium

cd-r's on the other hand, rely on a chemical layer which changes color when heated, which is a much more fragile method
>>
No I don't hate them , I have several CDs with different distros.
>>
No h8 here. Read-only media don't get accidentally erased. I keep cracks and loaders on them too so when I work on MS systems no worry about AV nuking them.
>>
>>51552663
Not so useless when my great great grandchildren will be enjoying the chinese cartoons I keep backed up.
>>
>>51553917

I have some well stored CDs from the 1980s and early '90s, most are Ok, but, a few have developed holes in the reflective layer. It appears not all CDs were manufactured equally.

I've backed them all up to FLAC, just in case.
>>
>>51552749
too bad there won't be a DVD drive in a 1000 years as it'll be so obsolete that none will exist.
>>
>>51552287
I haven't used DVD or CD in +6 years.
I dot need them
>>
>>51555132
i also.need them

>>51554980
You can already build your own. That will be even cheaper and easier in 1000 years. You can probably even buy a 430 IN 1 MULTI MEDIA READER, READS ANY FORMAT FROM THE LAST 650 YEARS!

7200 rpm seagate or WD HDD does the job faster and more reliably, with no worry. Optical media is relatively outdated at this point my man

also gosh dang optical drives are loud

This thread made me sad I don't have a DVD writer in my rig. I don't remember needing it for any practical purpose for years, but it sure is an interesting form of storage.

>you remember now you used to have a literal laser burning stuff on spinning disks inside your computer
It's all soulless SSDs and dull thumb drives these days.
>>
Anyone used blurays to back up? some to keep backups of family videos without having to split them across a load of discs.
