rule of thumb when they catch someone on the darknet is that it's almost always bad opsec. Looks like this guy talked to Ahmed in cleartext email. The FBI, Interpol, and the reptilian Jews that run the world have always been able to read that. The protocol is inherently insecure, and an email provider is a centralized organization that you can send cops to and demand they give you everything they have. The best you can do is secure the content with PGP or something (which he didn't do, it seems) and make sure the email provider doesn't know who you are (which is difficult, and it also seems he didn't do) The big darknet busts in the US have been the same kind of thing. People mixing their darknet identities with their real ones (which gives the three-letter agencies a target to pull their unescapable tricks on - once they know who you are, you're fucked) or committing the cardinal sin of leaving javascript enabled when on the darknet - which lets you fall victim to all sorts of browser exploits. Also people thinking bitcoin is anonymous when its very much not - spend bitcoins on drugs and all they have to do is look at the blockchain to determine where you got them from. And if that's a legal, above-board service (which it has to be if it accepts PayPal or some shit), they go there with a warrant demanding to know who it was with wallet X that bought Y bitcoins on date Z.
Why do most people get away with buying weed most of the time? Because doing this shit is beyond the abilities of a local police department, and local police have more efficient ways to bust people buying and selling weed anyway. The intelligence agencies could bust most of the drug buyers/sellers pretty easily, and occasionally they do, but for the most part, they have bigger fish to fry. Terrorists and pedophiles, mainly. Even those guys can and do evade the Five Eyes, but you have to be extraordinarily cautious and supremely paranoid, since one slip and you're fucked.
