Say it draws 0.2A at 5V, that's 1W of power needed.

Say you're a random point near the middle of America (idk), you've got a solar flux of about 125 W/M^2 (Look up solar flux maps for your area). If the solar panel is 15% efficient, you'll need about 6.7W of energy on the panel to get 1W out.

You'll want it to work day or night, so double the power requirements (store it in a cap, or a Li Ion battery?), 13.4W needed on the panel. Therefore, X^2 * 125 = 13.4, A solar panel about 30cm by 30cm.

Seems maybe a little high, but I haven't time to check it atm

Many of them are really good, depends on how much money you have. I suggest getting the Raspberry Pi 2 B, because it's the most powerful from the raspberry family. If you're really low on money, the A+ is decent and the newest Raspberry zero is insanely fucking cheap at 5$. Don't go for the clones models like the banana pi, orange pi or spin offs like odroid, cudie or beagle bone because those require more knowledge and manual work. The raspberry pi is a great choice for a starter because of it's huge and friendly community.

where are the single board devices which can run bsd and have wifi, off a sd card slot? beagles and soekrises and kin are too overfeatured (and expensive!) for my application and the rpi is a blob nightmare.

>>51545954
i agree with your assessment. I think they would have had a real winner if they ditched the fucking micro USB port for power and use a two pin header instead. I would have also liked to have seen solder pads for 4 USB ports, and a gig of ram.

I bet they'll make a 'RPI Zero+' to compensate for the deficiencies. As for a use, I'd like to see someone use this as a base for a quadcopter controller.
>>
>>51546665
Ok buy the zero and Nigger rig the fuck out of it to get a shitty cluster.

Or buy 3 C1s and get a cluster with decent capabilities for $100. Or buy 3 orange pi plus 2s and get a really capable cluster for $150.
>>
>>51546711
They're not $5 if you plan on networking them. Then you end up with shitty plug in networking which is almost as bad as not having networking.
>>
>>51546847
In arm you can get an odroid C1 for $35 and use a USB drive. Its got a real network port so speeds are decent.

For $50 you can get an orange pi plus 2 with a real SATA port and decent network and 2GB DDR3 memory and quad core 1.6ghz cpu.

For $120 you can get a minnowboard that has a couple of x64 cores (not arm) and real network and real Sata.

A regular computer would be better but you'd have to get an expensive avoton board to come near the power usage.

Provided you have a mini HDMI adapter, a mini USB to USB hub, an USB to ethernet adapter or a USB wifi dongle, a big enough micro SD or an external HDD…
The Pi Zero is useless unless you also want to buy a bunch of adapters, which completely destroys its purpose as a 5$ desktop computer.

What's the most economic set to make a stand-alone video surveillance system with a rPi Zero? I thought something like this:

rPi Zero / 5$
USB+RJ Hub / ~10$
SG 2TB HDD / ~70$
USB Box for HDD / ~20$
USB Cameras / ~15$ each
USB 10m Cables / ~10$
RJ 10m Cable / ~10$
C14 Power Cable Adapter Hub / ~10$
Small UPS / ~40$

Total: ~215$ (2x USB Cameras + 2x 10m USB Cable and 1x 10m RJ Cable) /

Make it ~250$ with shipping and taxes. Opinions? are there better choices?

but I don't wanna keep my PC on 24/7 just so the rPi can record to HDD, that's why I wanted to make a stand-alone system, HDD included.

Though I already got a good UPS now that I think about it and the C14 adapter Hub I use for TV/printer etc has still many free slots, I might just keep using this. That would make the cost around ~200$ all included instead of 250$ I guess.

Oh this sounds similar to the problem with trying to get an RPi to run some Neopixels.
>Wouldn't it be fun to add bright, beautiful NeoPixels to your Raspberry Pi project? However NeoPixels, and the WS2811/2812 LEDs that make them up, require a data signal with very specific timing to work correctly. Because the Raspberry Pi runs a multi-tasking Linux operating system it doesn't have real-time control over its GPIO pins and can't easily drive NeoPixels. Typically a small microcontroller like a Trinket or Teensy can be used to communicate with the Raspberry Pi and generate the NeoPixel data signal.

More info here https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixels-on-raspberry-pi/overview

I could fit the main control loop in an arduino (they sell nanos for 3$ on ebay ) and I could use a RPi zero for encrypting comms, telemetry, sending sensor data etc.

I don't think it was designed with connectivity in mind though.
But shouldn't an micro USB OTG cable, and powered USB hub should do the trick?

My concern is about the pins, The RPi0 makes a great pirate radio device but the missing pin that act as an antenna shouldn't this make a problem?

And what is the power usage? 5V volts?
Since I have an old flashlight key chain that have a solar panel.

Teensy uses an STM mcu, not avr. It's much more of a pain in the ass to get an ARM dev environment up and running from the bare chip than avr. Teensy is well worth it.
>>
>>51558719
only the v3

>>
>>51558719
>>51558719
>Teensy uses an STM mcu, not avr.
>STM
Just to be that asshole.

STM refers to "ST Microcontroller" where ST is a vendor for said microcontrollers.

ST is not the vendor behind the chip in the Teensy, that would be Freescale.

The term you're thinking of is likely that it's an ARM Cortex-M3 architecture chip.

>>
>>51560201

That's what happens, dude.

I've had humanitarian thoughts before and realized that this very situation would happen. I genuinely feel like they aren't selling the Raspberry Pi for profit. They're basically making them to cost with very little mark-up at all and the fucking vultures are coming out and buying them all up. This is how the market works.

I've thought about building houses for people and making them basically free if I ever became a multi-billionaire, because I believe that housing shouldn't ever be something that people worry about, but I KNOW that if I ever did that then rich people would snatch up dozens upon dozens of them and then resell them for the actual market value. It would be hard to stop that from happening.

We're never going to be able to buy the Pi Zero for $5 until there is no demand for them.
>>
>>51560359
are you 13 or just mentally retarded?

>you use this machine to play 2055's latest and greatest AAA video games.

Or maybe they will just cram more of these into the size of standard PC.

If PCs for AAAs haven't changed size at all in the last 20 years, don't know why you think they will continue to shrink
>>
>>51561121

I think we're beginning to plateau with graphics fidelity in video games. The next step in video games is to really flex the power of the cpu, making everything in a game have real-time physics.

On today's hardware, if you had a game where your hero had to fight 50+ enemies at once who all wore capes and loose cloth clothing that all sways dynamically because of wind on the battle field and from explosions from your fire spells or whatever, it would chug hard. There's no way your system could handle all that happening at once.

I do suspect we will be playing "AAA" top of the line advanced video games on small Pi Zero-type computers in 40-50 years. I honestly believe graphics cards we have today like the 980 ti being "good enough" for that, so with time of course it'll be trivialized, we're going to say the 980ti is "junk" in as early as 10 years, then we just need processors to evolutionary steps forward to account for the physics calculating needs.
>>
>>51561895
More the next step would be to cram the power into a headset like the oculus rift. Then next would be to make it power efficient and self contained so it lasts long enough on battery power.

it's a tad faster than the very first Pi, and a decent bit smaller
biggest issue is the awful ports (if they targeted say, $7 instead of a nice round number like $5, they could have put a single ordinary USB port on, maybe even full size HDMI out on that budget, making the device immediately useful out of box without some adapters you need to buy yourself)

like every one of the Pi models, it'd be fine for that purpose, drop OSMC on it or whatever and be on your way, assuming your preferred video formats weren't too out of the ordinary

>>51556695
yeah, I hate this about single board machines
you end up with
>machine: $5-50 depending on what you want
>USB wifi adapter: ~$10 for a shit one, you can go cheaper but enjoy awful connection quality
>keyboard, mouse: $5-10 a piece for a plain, ordinary one
>USB hub: ~$7, could go cheaper
>OTG cables if using Pi Zero: like, $1-4 depending on where you look
>power cable: $5-8, could probably find one cheaper maybe
>HDMI cable: at least $3
>case maybe: however much you feel like spending
>32GB microSD: less than $10

it adds up pretty quickly
bought a Pi 2, came out to around $70 after getting everything+shipping (video cable, wifi, case, keyboard, mouse, usb hub)
probably could have skipped the hub, but it turns out that I kind of do need to plug like 6 things into it sometimes (controllers, USB sticks, etc)

>>51556092
we're at the point where it's cheap enough to overengineer these things
