currently running a Nvidia 660ti with a i7-920 @2.66 ghz. thinking of making a jump up to a 980ti, would the processor be bottle necking the video card if i made this upgrade?
>>
Yes, that's a high tier GPU and you're pairing it with a low tier CPU. At least upgrade to an i5-4690k.
>>
The i7 will last longer. Upgrade gpu now and upgrade cpu when next gen intel chip or amd zen comes out.
>>
the idea was to just upgrade GPU now because i'm starting to see a loss in performance in newer games, and then down the line a bit go with a new mobo and cpu. but if i'm not gonna notice any performance increase with a 980 now because of bottleneck i will just wait
>>
It could bottleneck, but it never hurts to find out first then make an upgrade
>>
It'll bottleneck, especially at those clocks. Max the bitch out and it shouldn't be as bad.

You're much better off getting like a R9 280X for cheap and then doing a full build next year with Zen and the GDDR5X/HBM2 cards.

Shill threads like this need to fuckoff and die alerady.

goddanm advertising cunts need to realize this isn't a forum for advertising faggots to advertise their shitt products.

anyone who actually own an i7 knows it's more than enough for gaymen.

also at 1080p 660ti runs anygame thrown at it just fine
>>
its a chevy/ford thing for me. just not into amd/radeon stuff. had bad luck in the past and have seen friends have bad luck as well. I cant overclock the CPU currently because i'm running on a proprietary motherboard from a number of years back. so 2.66 ghz is what its gonna stay at until i can upgrade the motherboard

You sound like a dumb cunt.

Are you a dumb cunt?

probably

so running off assumption here, if i upgrade my GPU i will still see performance increases up to the point where my CPU bottlenecks my system correct? in game i'm running 92% load on GPU as seen in GPU-Z and about 23% load on cpu. if i were to upgrade the GPU and it ran on lets say 50-60% load where the cpu was up near 100% load now it should still perform better am i correct?
>>
Will a 2500K bottlenecka 980ti? A friend is willing to sell me it for around $100 with an aftermarket cooler which sounds like a sweet deal.

More like a 750 ti - 770

But yeah, OP, you probably want to upgrade your processor. It all depends on what YOU use it for on a daily basis, though. I recently built a CPU for my girlfriend with a 750 ti and pentium G-whatever the fuck and it runs her Sims games just fine. Are you playing AAA-title games? Then you may want a more powerful processor. But in most cases, the 980 ti alone will serve you well.

In my honest opinion...you should just stick it out another year and upgrade to a Pascal card. The difference would be astounding. Unless you have $1000 to blow between a 980 ti and a new processor (and most likely a new motherboard), then go ahead and do it.

Just look for a used 980x.
>>
>>51533638
-starcraft 2
-battlefield 4
-skyrim

are the games usually played. i try to run the highest quality if not max quality possible and BF definitely cannot run anything past medium with the setup as is. I do plan on upgrading the cpu a little down the road but just dont have the cash for it yet. mainly asking the question because if i wont see any performance gains by doing just the card alone right now then i will just wait it out.

>be bottle necking the video card if i made this upgrade?
Some games, yes, others no.
Remember, your 920 is still a good deal faster than the CPUs the new consoles have.

But also consider that everything out now on the highend is shit, because there is only so much you can do with 28nm.

Personally, I'd say buy a cheaper 280X, 290 or 970 from gpushack, save the rest of the cash and buy your highend GPU next year when we've finally got 14/16nm.

This should be as good as any new CPU.

if you overclock the piss out of the 2500k sure. Think Minimum 4.5ghz range. Regardless of what /g/ says, the 2500k will choke on CPU intensive games if left at stock.

>>51533582
yea. Very few, if any games, will actually utilize all the cores on a CPU up to 100%. For instance in games like Fallout 4, all 4 cores on my 4690k see between 35% minimum to as much as 75% load. Where as my GPU is usually around 65%.

But having your GPU pinned at 100% usage while the CPU is just chilling at sub 30s is a bottleneck yea.

or he can just get a Xeon X5650. Same socket and one of the few (if only) intel Xeon chips that can be overclocked.
>>
>>51531966
660ti was litterally the worst card of that generation so its probably worth replacing

I wouldn't buy nvidia again tho
>>
>>51533691
If I were you, I would wait. Same guy you replied to here...I used a 750 ti for about 5 months, it ran the few games I play just fine (Counter-Strike, Path of Exile) at 1080p ~45 FPS just fine. But I finally resorted Craigslist and bought a GTX 760 4GB and the difference between the two is very notifiable. I would I imagine that getting a 980 ti would be even crazier for you, but if you do that, you probably want to upgrade your processor as well.

I would just buy something to hold you over until Pascal, like I'm currently doing. I can't wait for Pascal. I'm finally going to go all-in on a card, even though I probably don't need it.

The number one thing to consider is the resolution you game at. Are you 1920 x 1080? 4K? Ultrawide (21:9)? That, to me, is what's most important when considering a graphics card. Sufficed to say, 980 ti will handle all of those pretty well...maybe not so much if you're going for 4K ultra settings.

You are always welcome here, brother.
