But what's the best VDSL router to get? My other option is to get an open reach modem and use any ordinary cable router, so what's the best normal adsl router to get for around £100 if that's the better option? And should I also invest in getting a new access point router?

I worked as tech support for BT. The home hub 5 is an absolute crock of shit. For the time being, change the wireless interface type to 802.11 n 40MHZ. It reduces the drops substantially. Also, don't let the router auto detect the channel. Manually put it on a less congested one by using a WiFi analyser available on most app stores.

The home hub 3 is solid when it comes to wireless signals. The powerline adaptor is more or less a non factor, unless you have some internal wiring issues.

Yeah the HH3 has been almost flawless after all these years. I believe it's just an issue with the HH5 fucking everything up.
Also guys I opted for the ASUS DSL-AC68U. Anyone got any experience with this router? It's basically the VDSL version of the RT-AC68U which is a fucking beast
