built this last year using a spare power supply and harddrives. if you were to build it now heres the list http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4bTVCJ
>970
i got it a week after it came out then a month later the 3.5gb shit popped up and i raged. oh well cant go back on it now.

Pretty standard build, only questions are
>why not spend a little extra and get 980ti?
>why WD black instead of Caviar Blue?
>>51526561
970 is still a pretty powerful card regardless of the 3.5 thing. Seems like a pretty decent build, but why'd you get a z97 mobo if you have a locked cpu?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CZjCTW
R8 my budget build. I chose an Intel processor so I could upgrade later without changing mobo, chose a z97 for same reason. I'm looking to do some 1080p gaming on high with 50+ fps, any suggestions?
>>
would it be sensible to merge /guts/ and build threads

both could benefit from more people and they are similar topics
>>
>>51526482
Get a z97 board so you can oc your unlocked cpu. For $450 either get two used 290x in crossfire, or go up to 500 and get 970sli, 780ti sli or a fury. With something like this http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-pro850wp1850snlb9 for your psu.
>>
>>51528015
Just get a used 280x, there's really no reason to buy that gpu.

How is this build? Would a 380x/380 be enough to hold me over until new cards come out or should I get the 390?

Complete philistine attempting to build my first pc with black friday deals. How good of a computer do you think I will manage for a max of $1500-2000? This is my build>>51533946. I spent $440 for the cpu off of craigslist, $135 for the 32gb ram and $130 for the motherboard both at ebay. If I had bought it from a store like newegg the cpu would have cost at $1030, the ram for $185 and the mobo for $240. I easily saved more than half the cost and that's not even including taxes and shipping. If you decide to bargain hunt like I did I suggest that you buy the cpu, ram and psu from a private owner and just pick the mobo up at an online retailer as there's so many things that can go wrong with a mobo if you have no experience on troubleshooting the issues.

As for a good build I suggest getting a 5820k with a cheap mobo like msi or asrock as both of those gets put on sale the most. A quality 600w psu should be enough for a single card of any kind and lastly get either a 4x4gb DDR4 2133 or a 2400 as for the best bang for your buck.
>>
>>51534316
buying used psus is also not really to be recommended. otherwise, i agree.

My dream build I'm saving for, that will be 1080P future-proofed for many years, opinion?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/TQjpCJ
>>
>>51537431
There's no such thing as "future-proofing" you either have powerful computers or you have weaker computers. If you want to have better performance in the future then you buy new components.

Your build is retarded on so many levels.
- Buy more RAM when you need it, every motherboard comes with 4 slots standard, except ITX, so there's no need to buy more than 2x4GB kits of RAM, buy another kit later if you run out of RAM.
- Buying a CPU that costs $170 more for performance that's almost the same, and will continue to be the same isn't "future-proofing" it's being stupid. Get a 6600K and be done with it.
- H55's are shit, get a decent air cooler with good mounting and you'll be able to transplant it into future builds 5+ years from now.
- You will just about never *need* a 1TB SSD, get mechanical storage when it's cheap and buy more later when prices for flash memory come down and speeds get better.
- The 780T is a shit case, get something that won't break as soon as you look at it. Computers sizes are trending downward, 10 years from now your 780T is gonna be cracked, faded and still stupidly big.
- RM is just one letter away from RMA, get a PSU with decent warranty with the right wattage and you'll be fine.
- Expensive motherboards are shit, get one that supports the right chipset and has all the right ports.

Here's a build because you'd probably fuck it up again. Better performance (Faster RAM, better GPU clock, faster SSD, better SSD interface) and almost 500 buckeroos cheaper.

Rarely goes above 45 degrees, it's silent and I have had 0 issues with the motherboard which I didn't expect considering how dirt cheap it was.
>>
>>51537879
You're doing it wrong. Why would you buy an i7 and not buy a separate gpu? It doesn't matter what you play, that's a pretty obvious mistake.
>>
>>51537857
>http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DPxc8d
Different guy but this build is my kind of price range since I am looking to drop around this much. I have two questions if you don't mind:

Are there any good quality cases that are built on their side rather than straight up?

Would I be better off getting a large monitor (that has hdmi input) or a TV (capable of 4k) for my display? I need both in one due to lack of room space.
>>
>>51537919
I had the i7 from my previous system where I also had a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 which shit the bed when out of warranty.

So I bought a new case, PSU and motherboard and built a "new" system.

I gave the GPU away to some guy who claimed he could fix it by putting it in an oven at 250 degrees for ten minutes but I haven't heard anything from him since so I'm guessing that didn't work out.
>>

>>51523560

>>
>>51537993
Because the price difference between an i7 and an i5 is enough to pick up a decent GPU, while the performance difference between i7 and i5 is often negligible depending on your workload.
>>
>>51538070
Bought i7 instead of i5 because of hopeful longetivity, I am not very rich so I don't have chance to 'update' my PC most likely in a while. had to build the best PC I could now and had no room to be efficient with price:performance, just pure bang.
>>
>>51538095
>implying the performance difference between an i5 and same gen i7 will magically increase with time
That's not how it works, anon. A 4770k won't last longer than a 4670k.
>>
>>51538127
The i7 had hyperthreading so it should help on the longrun the i5 didnt?
>>
Micro ATX build - air 240 or SG10?
>>
>>51538142
Not really. That's the part that depends entirely on your workload.
>Used for browsing and occasionally playing LoL or CS
For instance, hyperthreading doesn't benefit you at all here.
Where it does benefit you is when you're doing stuff like video encoding, and even then a 4770k is only about 15-20% faster in a best case scenario than a 4670k at the same clock speeds.
