Reposting from last thread:

My audio levels for mkv files are currently fucked for some reason. I'm using MPC-HC and different parts of the audio fade in and out randomly, making it painful to listen to. I don't have any problem with anything else though. Music sounds fine in foobar, and mp4s sound just fine in MPC-HC.

Hello /gee/,

I built a new pc last week, with a GTX 970 in it, and am having issues trying to get ubuntu to work properly.

I got no video feed whatsoever from the live CD, so i unmounted the GPU and installed ubuntu using integrated graphics but i still get no video after selecting ubuntu in GRUB.

From what I've read after a google search some people DO get video with a gtx 970 but are stuck on a lower resolution while others sometimes get video and can access the terminal to install new drivers. But in my case i never ever get video feed, I'm not even sure if the OS boots properly due to this. (It does boot properly when using integrated graphics)

I am clueless and frustrated please send help.

My specs, just in case.

i5 4590
GTX 970
16GB RAM
Gigabyte G1 Sniper B5
>>
try reinstalling. verify the integrity of the installation files on the CD with some kind of checksum first while you're still on windows.

I used the same CD to install ubuntu on my laptop and it works perfectly fine.

The issue, I'm sure, is that ubuntu can't into GTX 970 but the solutions and symptoms seem to vary and i can't find a solution for my case.

>>51514073
I can't provide a picture because my monitor simply doesn't receive any video from the GPU when trying to boot Ubuntu. I just get a moving logo saying "Input not supported".

Imagine electricity as water in a pipe

>Amps= Amount of water running thru it
>Volts= Pressure of the water running thru it
>Watts= Amount of water that goes thru the pipe in a certain amount of time

With those examples is easier to understand the proper explanation, so go google them

The power would just circle round, you're basically adding a roundabout with one exit that was- originally- the entrance.

>>51514470
You'd be encrypting encryptions, you won't pull the first key from the encryption so you would end up encrypting e.g. jjahdashdas99234882348923hfnasdmfams (hash) which was made from your password. In other words, your 'backup' would think your first password was 'jjahdashdas99234882348923hfnasdmfams ' and that would be what you retrieve from your backup, not your original password.
>>
>>51514488
I think there's no harm in it, and it would be sad if the cat got out one day and got bit by something that gave it rabies. I don't believe rabies vaccinations are all that expensive either, you can usually get it done at your local animal shelter for pretty cheap on certain days.

Do you have to authenticate when you want to check your bank balance? If the answer is yes, then you cannot get an app.

You could cut down your work load, create a macro and bind it to a key or have software you load and then run the job on (application.exe) have it autofill login fields except for the authenticator part which you do yourself. Then have another macro to automatically grab your bank balance figure and email it the respectful recipients.

You could also put all your funds into PayPal and give your parents the login details, or likewise, give your parents your account details + authenticator.

I kind of see what you mean. I remember Linux stores hashes of passwords instead of passwords. How would I go about backing up passwords in a secure manner then? Right now they're all on on medium and if something goes wrong it will take a lot of damage control.

On a hard drive swap partition should be a little faster because it can't get fragmented.

But I'm not about SSD's, and it might fuck up part of the SSD by writing a lot to it?

qBittorrent (FREE, no seeding capability, no adverts, free of bloatware, basic UI to the likes of Utorrent - every spackers favourite).

>>51514566
Doesn't matter.
On HDD, throughput and seeking is often faster towards the beginning of the disk, because that data is stored closer to the outer area of the disk, which has more sectors per cylinder. Thus, creating the swap at the beginning of the disk might improve performance.
Only benefit of a dedicated swap partition is guaranteed unfragmentation when you need to expand it; if your swap will never be expanded, a file created on a fresh filesystem doesn't require an extra partition.
>>51514648
Backup the encryption key, not the passwords encryptions (as explained before, that won't work).

Sort of stupid question/scenario:

Some asshole dumped a bunch of crap by my garbage bin in the alley. In it was an old Mac Plus. What can I do to resurrect the old thing?
I made sure it wasn't wet or damaged inside, plugged it in, and hit the power switch. It doesn't do anything for a few flicks of the switch, but every third time or so it powers on and a grid scans into view. Some times the system chimes repeatedly on startup.

I have no idea what I'm doing, I'm assuming it's just busted. Wondering if there's anything I can do with it.

I guess the only thing you can do is try to find the original model parts online somewhere, and start replacing/repairing the parts in your computer until it works. Start with the power supply and go from there maybe? It might be beyond hope, but it couldn't hurt to try.

I bet if you could get it working again, you might be able to sell it to a vintage collector for a pretty penny. From what I understand, there's a small but sustainable market for retro computers like that.

It just means the program won't be able to use more than ~3 GB of RAM, normally most programs don't use that much anyways so it doesn't really make a difference.

Ok, so what I don't understand is how can you make specific 32/64 bit version of programs when the architecture and OS are 64 bit? The OS can give you space beyond the 4B values.

Hiya /g/

I need little help for choosing the right gpu for my needs with price to performance, i know that get thrown around a lot but hear me out.

In Australia a 380/960 4gb are both around 330-350 dollars, with the card playing everything i want at 1080p including gta5 which is that i care about the most.
But for $500 i can get a 970, is the 200 dollars each really worth it in the long run with only playing at 1080p with most my games being low demanding games.
Do I buy in to the Future proof meme?

Thanks.

What are the features on "high end" boards that improve overclocking performance? I see people explain it with stuff like "smoother voltage" or "better thermals" without really explaining what that entails. Isn't thermal performance basically entirely dependant on the CPU's cooler?
>>
>>51519854
With vsync enabled, if the FPS drops below the refresh rate, the FPS will be halved.

>>51519869
There's hardly any difference in performance between 980Ti stock and EVGA's 980Ti. The only difference is the cooler.
If they're both running the same frequencies, the one with the best cooler is the go-to card.

>>51519961
Look up the part number of the capacitor on the monitor. You want something with the exact same specs. The quality of the capacitors rarely matters as long as it's used within its rated limits.
Where to buy, however, is another matter. Depends on where you are, I guess.

If those are the CPUs I assume they are, they're all priced pretty fairly - so it depends on what you're using it for.
Internet and movie watching - i3 dual is enough
Gaming with an average GPU or wanting to save as much money as possible or using that money to invest into a better GPU - i5 3.2
High load programs, etc.. more future proof,... - i5 overclockable K CPU

I'm the guy you first replied. I'm a bit confused because everyone says something else. I pretty much would like to do basic stuff that includes gaming with the intend to upgrade my gtx750ti to something worthwhile in the future.
Now the i5 with 3.2 is I guess pretty okay but from what I have read I did understand that higher GHz is more important than more cores?
Also would be paying 40€ for 0.3GHz more even worth it?
i5 K 3.5GHz would be at 243€
i5 3.5GHz at 222€
i5 3.2GHz at 180€
i3 3.7GHz at 114€

I am not sure if I will ever overclock, I probably wont.

>>51520203
That's what it boils down to, really. There's more room for fiddling with the voltage on a "high-end" board.
Mostly just means that there's better-than-usual components on the board (VRMs, those thingies under the heatsinks surrounding the CPU, among others), and tons of features in the BIOS to control those components, so the voltage doesn't fluctuate or deviate too much, even during high load.
There's also some more settings than on your regular "MSI GAYMAN 9000% MOTHERBOARD".
Those components also get warm, but not warm enough to become that much of an issue, since boards have solid cooling anyways these days.

Other than that, there's not much more I can explain. It's better components and more features.

>>51520291

Model names, you nigger.
i5 quad 3.2 is probably i5-4660
i5 quad 3.5 is i5-4690
Don't go for the i3, those are painfully slow. Plus, a i5 is just a failed i7, just like an i3 is a failed i5, if even that.
More GHz =/= more performance. The difference between the 4660 and 4690 is negligible. Just go for the 4660 if you plan on doing budget gaming.

>>51520386

a) Some games benefit more from higher clock.
b) Some games benefit more from higher core count.
c) Some games benefit more from $ spent in CPU.
d) Some games benefit more from $ spent in GPU.

For some time it's going into the direction of b) and especially d).

CPU almost doesn't matter anymore with most GPUs in gaming.

So if the amount of money you want to invest is limited (or already fixed), save money on CPU and spend it on GPU. You could also check out reviews if there's more performance for your money in AMD CPUs (4 core / 8 modules at ~100 €).

My bro's computer is such a piece of shit. LIke a real piece of shit.
As far as I know it only runs Windows XP, and it started getting viruses. Since all my bro does it is play retro games, and any retro emulator he could possibly need I can easily get for Linux, I thought I would install an Ubuntu partition. I got part of the way through the installation process, and then it just fuckin' stopped with no indication of continuing.

Bored, I just reset the machine and gave up, but now it fucking blue screens every time I turn it on. Since my bro is on vacation in California, I have until Friday before he gets back. What should I do? Since the ever reliable ever accesible Ubuntu won't even fucking work on his shitmeister (Let alone Windows 7) and I can't find the XP disc that was used for his machine, what can I do?

I don't think he'll care about using a different OS, as long as he can play his retro games, so is there a reliable Linux OS I can install?

Look for your sound chip model in https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt and add it as an argument when loading the hda module. In whatever file your distro use for loading modules, add:

Okay /g/, I'm at wits end. I built a PC a year ago, clean install Win 8.1. Upgrade to 10 in July. All the sudden 3 months ago it freezes during boot. safe mode works. Reset PC (reset windows, keep documents) is tried about 50 times then finally works.

2 weeks no incident... same shit after. It randomly stops working. System file checker finds shit it can't repair. Disk check is fine. Then randomly after about 100 boot attempts it boots completely normally into Windows.

I'm at wits end. I'm backing up my SSD to my NAS. I'm assuming I should just install Win 10 clean? Or maybe go back to win 8.1?

When it won't boot, it gets past EFI and then is usually black. Sometimes you get a couple frames of the loading circle before logon. The HDD light remains fully illuminated. The reset button on the PC (soft reset) doesn't work immediately, but instead the PC shuts down after about five seconds.

Basically, I want to sort only the lines where VALUE-5 was equal or higher than 200,0 and delete all the other ones. There are about 15 thousand lines, so I can't do this manually. Could you please give me some guidance? Thanks a lot
