Is it one of the best examples of a technologically less-capable device that proves to be massively popular and successful? Even for its time (1989), the competition like Atari and Sega had devices with far better specs but they failed to attract people's attention.

Betamax only lost to VHS because of porn.

Just like the Wii.

Nintendo does well when they focus on fun. They do poorly when they focus on technology (see: Virtual Boy).

Man, before the Wii launched they pushed all these video advertisements showing very attractive Japanese families and women playing games in groups like the bowling game. Those hot women got *everyone's* attention.

Don't forget that there was a color adapter so you could connect your Gameboy to your television.

The real mystery was how was that done? How could you play monochrome games in color?!

By the way, I'm not talking about the Game Boy Color, Advance, or anything else. There was a TV converter for the original Game Boy that would output color. I can't find a damned thing about it now. I read an article talking about how they did it. If I recall correctly, the GB had four monochrome shades and the game developer could set a value mapping that to one of several pre-set palettes. Thus, when it went through the converter, it was output in color that actually looked pretty decent.
>>
>>51508898
Yes, the Super Game Boy. It was possible as long as the games supported the accessory.
>>
>>51508924
all games supported it the Super gameboy was just GB hardware in a cart with a few extra features and a timing issue
>>
>>51509030
Yes but you won't get color if you play Super Mario Land, for example, since the SGB didn't exist that early. The mainline Pokémon games support it, for example, as they were released late in the Game Boy's lifetime.
>>
>>51509099
You get color on all GB games, there's a list of preset palettes to choose from and the SGB was programmed to choose one for certain games right off the bat while later games had all that data on the cart like pokemon and Donkey Kong
>>
>>51508606
are you 40?
>>
>>51509099
You get them on all of them. First one I ever plugged into the Super Gameboy back in the day was Metroid 2.

Gamecube had a similar accessory too that worked all the way up through advanced.

Game Boy Player, yeah.

The '80s was full of them, you don't think pieces of shit like the Commodore 64 were anywhere near top of the line, do you?

now fuck off

The biggest issue was the colorless screen. The color options ate up too much power. The Game Boy lasted a fair bit, and it was simpler to make games in black and white than in color.

I had some animes in beta, I cant remember the names but one was about a guy playing a weird instrument in a field. I thought it was really cool so I watched it over and over.
Only years later I understood it was an ocarina (thanks to the zelda game)

As to why betafailed, they should choose a better name next time I guess

>NES
In the US the NES resurrected a market left in ruins after the 1983 video game crash, there wasn't really much of a competitor.
>>
>>51508589
>Way cheaper
>Used less batteries, better battery life
>Smaller and more portable than the competition
>Games were good

Stop asking stupid questions
>>
>>51508637
Betamax lost to VHS because VHS players were cheaper due to JVC's willingness to license the technology to anyone, VHS tapes being able to store longer videos, and the rental market.
>>
>>51510674
And porn.
>>
>>51508589
>had better game support
>was cheaper
>was smaller and more portable
>better battery life
Gee I wonder why it won
>>
>>51510685
Porn only followed the trend that everyone else was following.

Consumers chose VHS because it was cheaper and could hold an entire movie on one cartridge. This caused video rental stores to stock more VHS tapes, which in turn caused VHS to become the more dominant format.
>>
>>51510674
This is was open cheap system vs coraz expensive license
>>
>>51508659
yeah now look at how the wiiu is doing..
PS2 is still the #1 game system of all time.
>>
>>51508589
The gameboy was't less-capable than other devices.

It was actually PORTABLE because the batteries didn't run out in 1h like the competition did and it cost less than half of what the atari lynx and sega gamegear did.
>>
>>51510234
Don't shit on my SID chip, yo.
>>
>>51510947
PS2 while it had excellent 3rd party games, the first party line up could have been stronger and the hardware was absolute garbage.
It's far from the best console
>>
Is there a name for the trend of cheaper less capable tech beating out better developed and more expensive competition?

This. The GameCube was far better than the PlayStation 2.

Also, daily reminder that the PlayStation was stolen from Nintendo by Sony.

I think they even had some profit from the hw unlike the competition that started pushing their consoles at a loss iirc.

You Betamax faggots always forget the fact that when Betamax entered the market it had a pathetic 60 minute recording length while VHS had a 3 hour recording length.

Doesn't matter, specs should always be more desirable than real world benefits.

It was ahead of it's time. I think the only competitor was the SEGA Dreamcast.
>>

>le betamax was better meme
Confirmed for someone who never used both.
It was marginally better at best. If I recall correctly, it only had a ~5% greater resolution horizontally. Vertically they had the same resolution (i.e. they were both 480i --if they weren't, the television would not show the pictures).
Sony tried to make this seem like it was a bajillion times better, but the consumer could easily see that it made fuck all diference. If you put them side by side, they both look pretty much identical.
>>
>>51516805
>they were both 480i
Shit I forgot to say, except in Europe/Australia where they were 576i.

One of my favourite examples of a video game outside its intended console to play on due to it being popular elsewhere is THPS3 for the n64. This is the airport level and there are no people, the draw distance and fog cuts to black, and all of the windows are boarded up. If you've ever played THPS3 on anything else you should feel this is like a horror show. They also made THPS3 and 4 for the PSX with just butcheredshit everything.
