>Samsung 850 evo
>>
Yes because it's plugged into a sata2 port. You're getting half of what you paid for.
>>
>>51505816

I've read that the difference between sata2 and sata3 are only noticeable on benchmarks.

there's a setting I can enable here to increase performance but it sometimes makes Windows lock up.

2x Intel 530 Series in raid0, set the settings to match OP's

I feel like this does increase speeds enough that it's worth it to do the raid.

Yeah it did. I'm afraid it will drop again and I could have waited for a better deal. Still 80 is good.

I managed to get my SSD working on sata3 with a hack but there's something off with these results, am I right?
>>
>>51506533
For an evo that's about right iirc.
>>
>>51506533
I can hit 2.4gb/s with 840 pro in rapid mode. But you don't see that much of a performance increase in real life just in benchmarks. On mobile atm when I get home I can post benchmarks. About 2 hours give or take.
>>
>>51506533

>>
>>51506719

Yeah. I honestly don't think it will get any cheaper even with black friday and cyber monday. Just a few weeks ago was over 100.

I said to myself that when it reaches slightly under 100 I'd get one. 80 is good for 250 GB.

Why am I getting only ~500 MB? >>51506533
>>
>>51508445
The program in my first pic is from samsung magician. I get these speeds because of RAPID mode. You don't notice as much improvement as you would think so I'm guessing RAPID mode gets the high numbers in synthetic benchmarks and not so much in real world use. But it is definitely faster with RAPID mode.
>>
>>51508565
You need to enable RAPID mode. iirc the 850 evo should support it. Also I ran the samsung magician optimization tool and windows 7 ssd updates for TRIMM support or w/e its called.
>>
>>51508536
3.65gb/s sequential read speeds... wee oww
>>
>>51505914
is also noticeable on boot and any high i/o tasks such as running VMs.
>>
Yes,, very.
>>
>>51508386
you are using rapid mode which just takes a chunk of your ram to use as an extra cache before read/write to the ssd. it can help make things a little faster for some things but mostly it is placebo desu senpai
>>
>>51508565
Because you don't have 'benchmark cheater' mode enabled.
RAPID mode doesn't help a microsecond but it's there to make benchmark numbers look nice and large.
>>
>>51508845

Yes I don't quiet understand. Sata3 speeds should be more or less max'ed out.

I did a clean install because I don't trust cloning software but should I install the stuff Samsung put on the CD? I didn't even look to see what it is.
>>
>>51508809
Besides not stating about it using system ram to reach these speeds. I did state twice that it didn't make much of a difference out side of benchmarks, but it does make a difference. Thanks though dickhole sump pump. close enough right lol
>>
>>51508880
it uses system ram to get these speeds plus sata3 is supposed to be 6gb/s max i think.
>>
>>51508845
it does make my system start maybe 1-2 seconds faster. I was reading that one of the best benefits of RAPID mode is might actually increase the life of the drive because it uses the flash memory in the ssd less or uses the NAND controller less or something like that.
>>
What's the fastest SSD you can buy? San Disk Extreme Pro or something? New to SSDs btw.
>>
>>51509057
yeah san disk extreme pro and samsung 850 pro I think are the fastest sata3 ssd's you can get with the extreme being a little faster according to benchmarks which don't always equate to the best real world performance.

Well I generally trust San Disk for quality and to be the best when it comes to anything solid-state anyway.

I mean my guess was based on the fact San Disk practically have an Extreme Pro line for everything they do and it's almost always the fastest on the market.

Are Win8+ transfer speeds slower than Windows 7? I have an 840 Evo which used to get 500+MB read and write in Windows 7 but as soon as I formatted to Windows 8.1 I only got 350-400 (around max Sata 2 speeds). I now have a brand new 850 Evo and have formatted to Windows 10 and I get similar sorts of speeds. I have a Sabertooth 990FX and there are no Sata3 drivers or anything available.

Ignore any SSD without Power Loss Protection (PLP) you might find yourself with a 300 dollar brick. Also I recommend Intel 750. Expensive but reliability is what should drive performance and not the other way around.
>>
>>51514033
NVMe is the new standard for SSD. Windows 10 and modern BIOS support it natively. The drivers are now standardized so yes if your SSD has NVMe your good to go.
>>
>>51517438
Yeah modern BIOS so if you have a motherboard before say, Z97, you're pretty much out of luck.
>>
>>51505914

>>
>>51517390
>without Power Loss Protection (PLP)
How many SSDs are there without that now days?
>>
>>51517460
Its only gonna go down hill from here. That SSD in particular needs a PCIe 3.0 x4 lane anyway. Planin to get an X99 myself, as well as an Intel 750.
>>
>>51517481
All of them its mainly reserved for enterprise level SSD. Very few consumer grade SSD have them, Samsung has some kind of firmware level solution but what you need is capacitors to flush the NANDS in the event of power loss.Seriously look up "SSD disappearing from BIOS". Its not the wear leveling that'll destroy SSDs its data corruption. Intel 750 has PLP but the spec sheet says it doesn't protect in every event.
>>
>>51514018
Faster read/write speeds have a variety of applications. I could have bought a SATA3 SSD and a PCI-E adapter card, but that would have cost more than the 2 840s I got for $70.
>>
>>51517635
Sandisk's Ultra II budget line offers some protection (enough to not get bricked, will still lose any data yet to be written), I'd figure that any more expensive drives would.
>>
>>51517664
>Faster read/write speeds have a variety of applications.
Sounds like you're writing an essay for school about a topic you know nothing about. Were you shooting for at least a 40-word count post here?
>>
>>51517688
True, but I've been reading that even though some drives claim to have them they aren't all too reliable and eventually succumb to being bricked. Mind you not immediately PLP even if poorly implemented helps but they will fail.

>lose any data yet to be written

Which given how SSDs work apparently requires them to constantly write mapping data and if the mapping data doesn't get written well... hence the need for capacitors to give the drive the few final seconds it needs.
>>
>>51505653

windows
>>
>>51517697
I didn't go into my reasons because it wouldn't matter what they are, you'd find a way to disagree with me on the principle of making yourself look right.
>>
>>51517855
Good one, put that in your essay too. It's good for another 20 word count at least.
>>
>>51517886
Ok dude, but remember you're the guy here who started the conversation with "what is the point of RAID 0?". Something you could have simply looked up on wikipedia.
>>
>>51517804
>Which given how SSDs work apparently requires them to constantly write mapping data and if the mapping data doesn't get written well... hence the need for capacitors to give the drive the few final seconds it needs.
From what it sounds like, Sandisk's drives back that up to a reserved part of the drive regularly while writing the data to avoid problems.
>>
>>51517959
Wish someone told me about this shit back in 2010 my fucking OCZ vertex 2 bricked randomly and without warning. I was planing to raid 0, 2 velociraptors in my X99 build cause I was so uncertain of SSDs. Back then there was no explanation no reason it just happened. Well now I no better and I pray Intel is as reliable as I think they are. Performance is pointless if its not consistent, it needs to work and it needs to last.

Gonna raid1 these badboys as an ESXI datastore.

Already got SSDs floating around in everything else. 1.25TB worth in my desktop PC, and a few other 240gb drives in laptops and a usb enclosure (Zalman ZM-VE300 enclosure is the fucking tits, it acts as a usb3 virtual ODD for isos. Installing win10 from an ssd over usb3 is insanely fast).
>>
>>51506411
There's a weaboo version and a non-weaboo version, you need to d/l the one that doesn't have "Shizuku" in the filename
>>
>>51518107
Was thinking the same thing, Funny too I lost that SSD because of a sudden power loss. I plan on picking up a UPS anyway but the only other scenario that would cause a sudden loss of power would be if you had to force a restart during a system hang (windows freezes for some reason), Usually data is not being written during a hang but I rather be safe then sorry. PLP FTW.
