I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now and I've gotta say its aim towards a user friendly design just makes it more difficult to use when ironing out certain bugs or issues. Are there any distros you guys know of that work well for small pc workloads that have as much support as ubuntu?

Stick with the main distros, don't use the bullshit smaller ones that are basically rethemed main distros.
Debian, Fedora, and OpenSuSe is what you should use for the best support.

Obviously Lubuntu my friend. It's a version of Ubuntu meant for cpu/ram efficiency, and it has plenty of support.
However, if you feel like you have enough experience, you can try Debian. Debian is lighter than Ubuntu, and still user friendly-ish. Make sure to get a non-free firmware iso to prevent headaches during/after install.
