What's the best laptop for programming?
It has to work well with Linux (Ubuntu).
It will be used for pentesting/programming.
I prefer bigger displays.
Price is not really a problem, keep it as low as possible though.
Extra points for blocky/minimalistic/fancy design (see picture).

I'm searching for a new laptop too, so... Bump!

I kinda dislike the touchscreen feature...
Still a great collection of atoms.

You already have your answer. Pixel 2 LS is a top tier experience.

Is ChromeOS replacable with Linux?
Heard that, that isn't possible? (Doesn't work flawlessly)

OP here.
If I install Ubuntu on a ChromeBook Pixel, will I be able to use the advances controls on the keyboard, like adjust brightness and stuff?
>>
>>51496206

Yes. Check out the recently released https://galliumos.org/

It's built on top of xubuntu and optimized specifically for chromebooks.

A used thinkpad x1?
>>
>>51496233
I don't understand. You can single boot Ubuntu on any MacBook. Completely replace OS X. In fact, Linux runs really well on MacBooks. Is this anon downy?
>>
>>51496132
I have this running arch and would definitely recommend it
>>
>>51496295
Thanks! That seems like excactly what I want.
>>
>>51496318
Anon is not downy.
Anon is kind of picky and disliked running an OS that is not fully supported by the hardware.
>>
>>51496295
Most Chrome OS devices have LOCKED UEFI/BIOS. The Pixel doesn't. But please do your research to make sure you can flash other MacBooks with custom BIOS first.
>>
>>51496360

OP as far as I can tell was speaking within the context of the Pixel. Other devices, even the Pixel, should require additional due diligence before purchase and not blindly purchasing shit based off random ass anons on 4chan.
>>
>>51496351
No offense but Ubuntu is so fucking streamlined nowadays there is zero reason to be concerned about that. I haven't had a driver or hardware issue with it in years on multiple devices.

>>51496360
I meant flash other Chrome OS devices*

IMO the Pixel is overpriced. $200 used ThinkPads perform just as well, with just as great Ubuntu compatibility.
>>
>>51496417

Ehhh price is relative. It has amazing build quality and a really nice display/aspect ratio/trackpad/battery life/aesthetic.

You're paying a premium for that just like you would with a macbook.

See Raphael's samus kernel on github. Mine works pretty well

Pixel's BIOS is locked too. There's some BIOS write protect screw. Have fun dissembling your laptop without damaging it and losing your warranty in any case.
>>
>>51496233
Except this isn't true. Xubuntu and Ubuntu ran marvelously on my MBA

WOAH
>>
>>51498193
Are you suggesting that dissembling a laptop, in this case specifically a Pixel 2, without damaging it is somehow hard?

If so, I don't think the OP should put much weight in your opinion since you are either retarded or have some kind of physical handicap that prevents you from completing even the simplest tasks requiring hand eye coordination.
>>
>>51498193
This is only if you intend to reflash the bios with libreboot, which is not necessary. Ubuntu and other distros install just fine with the standard bios by just hitting ctrl+L

You can get a T430 for $200

Good luck finding a better laptop for that kind of money

Disregard Ubuntu, use OS X with homebrew and a rMBP is what you're looking for. You won't notice the difference.
