SPDIF isn't hard to find. USB doesn't really mean anything. USB just puts your sound card in an external device - so you still have a DAC hanging out there, and quality varies a lot. There are good PCI sound cards and good USB sound cards. There are also bad ones.

If you're going with SPDIF you might as well just use your motherboard's onboard audio.
