I'm helping my friend pick out a new microphone because he wants to try voice-acting. What are some good starter mics to pick from?

Literally any cheap fucking $3 3.5mm computer mic is perfectly good for the purpose. Then if your friend found it to be a fun hobby, buy a more proper setup _when you have a need for it_. You don't get good at something for throwing more money at it.

No this mic is shit for actual singing it doesn't pick up highs very well lows are distorted

Go with a Audio Interface and get a Shure SM7B never look back don't fuck up like I did and keep buy USB Microphones believing a different USB MIC will be better then the last.

what are the benefits of a not USB mic, I'm Noob as fuck and know nothing

Owning a Audio Interface allows you to control the gain and other things XLR is less likely to pick up static and other problems that USB might get. USB mics can get static leaked into along with other shit you don't want in your audio

I have to agree, avoid a usb mic. They have a tendency to add noise to the mix via ground loop with the usb components. Also the have a tendency to hijack your audio options to act as a shitty DAC.

Honestly putting a usb controller inside the mic case was one of the worst ideas ever

xlr mic plus audio interface would be loads better, even a shitty 3.5mm computer mic would be better

Shure makes nice microphones, sm58 is standard fare for vocalists everywhere

Dont get a condenser if the room acustic is shit

Come on, friend, did you even read the OP

The Snowball should be strictly only for voip
Audio Technica is pretty much the entry, entry level mic

If your friend is a poor faggot: ATR2100 or AT2005

If you can afford to spend a couple hundred, start with a cheap interface like an M-audio mtrack plus mkii, roland quad, focusrite 2i2. Then grab a dynamic like an SM57/58, blue encore 100, or spend more for a shure SM7b or heil PR40. Electrovoice is overpriced as fuck.

As someone else said, don't bother with a condenser because it will sound like shit in an untreated room.

I got a Blue Snowball and personally think the thing is a piece of shit. I mean I've had worst. But the thing sounds like I'm talking into a tin can, it picks up fan noise from way behind where it's sitting and doesn't provide any warm, professional sounding goodness.

I see no difference between this and a decent headset mic, still looking for something that could be used for VA myself.
