What kind of Web hosting service does /g/ use ?

I recently acquired a .com domain name for 1$ at godaddy, and I'm paying 3$/month for a VPS (Ubuntu, 1 Core 2.4ghz cpu, 2Gb RAM, 10 Gb storage).

I can't complain much given the price and the speed I get on that virtual server

http://www.speedtest.net/result/4857052219.png

I use it to host my shitty website and run some node.js servers.

What do you use your own/rented servers for ? How much do you pay ?
>>
Check pulseheberg vps M for a cheap vps. Personnaly I have a ks-1 from kimsufi (ovh) 6€/month for 500gb, 2g ram and a shitty atom CPU. Can't complain
>>
~6€ month Kimsufi KS-1 (imageboard, Hentai@Home, seedbox, MUD client)
~2.5€ month Online.net Kidechire (mostly for fiddling around, can't let a 2.5€ gigabit dedi expire - Cookie Clicker in remote desktop & IPFS currently)
~14 USD/year RamNode VPS (small static website, irssi, XDCC bot, proxy)
>>
I use Leaseweb for things I care about, DO for playing around/prototyping.

$3/mo for Leaseweb
$5/mo (I never run them for a month though) for DO.

what are some good vps with b t c ?

What's the advantage of a VPS over traditional hosting?

I understand it gives you greater control, but it seems like it comes at the expense of more responsibility.
>>
>>51492776
you have root access and can do whatever the fuck you want

Literally where?
>>
>>51492812

Right, but that means you're entirely responsible for all maintenance.

The only examples of stuff I'd ever want to run on a VPS are running a VPN, or a Counterstrike server. Anything else?
>>

>Right, but that means you're entirely responsible for all maintenance.
pretty much. it's certainly not something you'd recommend to someone who has no experience managing a server. at least not if he's gonna run some kind of public-facing service on it.

>The only examples of stuff I'd ever want to run on a VPS are running a VPN, or a Counterstrike server. Anything else?
even for simple web hosting, a VPS makes more sense if you can handle it properly. you can install the software you want, like a recent (1.9.x) version of nginx or a different DBMS. you can configure all of that for your specific needs to optimize performance.
>>
>>51492812
Are you talking about traditionnal hosting ?
>>
>>51492882
I'm getting a VPS to host my side-projects(nodejs) and learn some more server side stuff, play around with varnish, setup automatic backups on my main site, etc
>>
>>51492981
I can do exactly the same on my dedicated server
>>
>>51492862
Please answer this
>>
>>51493009
dedicated servers are more expensive

Good point.

>>51492990
>I'm getting a VPS to host my side-projects(nodejs)

Also a good point. I didn't even realize I can't really do any nodejs stuff with my provider.
>>
>>51493009
we're talking about VPS vs. traditional hosting here. traditional hosting is NOT a dedicated server.
traditional hosting is "here, take this shell without root, ftp access and a web management thingy to create databases"
>>

I am currently using 000webhost to host a pet project of mine before I pay for a real service

Yes I am aware of the breach, I used a dummy email and password. I don't host any sensitive data there anyway.

Come on man, where's your pride :(

OVH seems cheaper (look at the link I posted above)
>>
>>51493191
I'm a poor college student learning PHP in attempt to make a joke anime site. I have no pride.
>>
>>51493205

looks cheaper than OVH, is it reliable ?
>>
>>51493191
Not him, but why exactly is using that a bad thing?
>>
>>51493257
I think they had stability problems 4 or 5 month ago due to the growing demand, but now it seems ok
>>
>>51493277
You literally have no control whatsoever on the hosting itself. No shell, no ssh, no config-files editing. It's narrowed to webpage hosting, and you get a shitty something.shit.com domain name.

Fine for learning php/Js/html, but that's it.
>>
>>51493222
OVH are a little cheaper and bigger(more reliable?) but LS are closer to my physical location.
I pay for the <3ms latency.
>>
I bought my first vps from ovh a few days ago.

How can I throttle the entire CPU so nothing runs above 90%? So I don't get suspended for overuse.
I've only found commands that can do it for individual tasks.

I'm doing intense stuff like running virtual machines within virtual machines, which takes cpu to 100% (single core basic).
>>
>>51493926
Can't you just tell your vm to use less CPU?
>>
>>51494068
I guess.
It'd be easier to limit everything though. If I limit the vm and then open calculator for example, it goes back up to 100%.

I just renewed my INIZ VPS that I use for IRC.

that should do

>>
>>51494590
Yeah I've tried that, but I want to limit the entire CPU - not a specific process.

Google Compute Engine.
1 cpu, 1.7Gb ram, 500gb of storage. ~$25/month.

I could probably get a better deal but I get a discount on top of this and don't have to deal with bullshit like >>51493926
>>
>>51495041
That's quite expensive. I hope that CPU and the Internet Google provide are fast, otherwise you got keked

Are you a kek, by any chance ?
