AMD is pretty much done for good.
They lost 20% market shares to Nvidia compared to last year's season.

This is simply not sustainable. This company doesn't make any profit at all.

>>51488672
Oh wow, just checked other benchmarks of BF4 and it matches up. Always thought Battlefield run quite well on lower cards and when I saw this I thought someone was trying to shill.

Though this is obviously a troll thread due to cherrypicked graphs...
>>
>>51488763
Yeah I was actually surprised to see BF4 have such poor framerates on that test for the lower tier cards, even on ultra. I have a 380 and on ultra in non-multiplayer settings it usually hovers between 60-70 at 1080p.

That article is super depressing though. I seriously wish I bought a 390 or something different, just couldn't fit anything better in my case at that time. I mean the 390 and the 970 curbstomp all of these cards for just a little bit more money.
>>
>>51487870
The card is strangely limited by its power budget.
Go to the CCC, turn it up (what everyone should do anyway), and enjoy 10-15% better performance, without even overclocking.

I still want to know just what the fuck AMD was thinking there. Did they really HAVE to keep the 190W TPD of the 380 at all costs?
>>
>>51489063

I would guess yes, they do to keep numbers sane. Otherwise you just have a card thats nearly as thirsty as a 290 but nowhere near as fast.
>>
>>51489395
That's bullshit.
Just because you turn up the power limit by 50% does not mean the card will consume 50% more power. It just prevents throttling. Realistically I'd say it increases power consumption by 10-15% under full GPU load for 10-15% more performance.
>>
>>51489479
To add a bit more explanation: the card averages around 170W under a heavy gaming load, but will only peak to 190W, then do a full stop and throttle down clock speeds.
If you increase the power budget, it will peak above 190W, and average power consumption will be closer to 190W under full load.
>>
>>51489479

The point is upping power limits lets it potentially do that and thats easy to spin into "hurr durr nuclear reactor" as many reviewers are all kinds of retards.
>>
>>51489520
True. Many reviewer present Furmark numbers as maximum power consumption numbers, when in fact all that number tell you is how much thermal headroom the card has for overclocking. It has no relation to any real usage scenarios ever.
>>
>>51489554

Furmark is so retarded for testing purposes it makes my brain hurt - especially given AMD and Nvidia write code into their drivers specifically to throttle early during furmark (though iirc Nvidia is more aggressive about it) as it can - and will - kill cards even at stock due to the insane load.

Then again most of /g/ doesn't understand how power consumption works either and the stupid charts most review sites use only further compound the problem. Funnily enough tom'shardware has some pretty good kit to get accurate measurements and not some silly kill-a-watt metre and guesstimating backwards based upon the listed TDP of other components.
>>
>>51488388
them and apple
>>
>>51489606
Yeah, Tom's Hardware does the best power consumption measurements, and they have the best tools. Particularly the German team, but their measurements don't always make it into the English reviews, those guys just use the simple old method, and sometimes use the data from the German team.

We need an idealised workload, like Prime95, for GPUs. They're actually working on GPU support, I wonder if it'll be any good for stress testing. It would still be an unrealistically high load, but not an artificial one like Linpack or Furmark.
>>
>>51489796

The german team was the first one to call Nvidia on their 145w TDP bullshit for the 970.
>>
>>51488664
This, you can crossfire pretty much anything amd together
>>
>>51489836
In their tests in general the Nvidia cards don't consume substantially less power than AMD cards. What little power they use less is easily explained with cutting down features on the cards.
>>
>AMD damage control

The GTX980 up to date has been the most power efficient card ever.

You can run that card with a good 400W PSU.

Because when you see Gaming Evolved logo appear in a game it means: "This game will run fine on both brands, the fps amount depends on real card power and optimisation" unlike Goyworks that is like: "BUY OUR NEW CARDS IF YOU DON'T WANT CRIPPLED PERFORMANCE KEK!".

So in this case we can say that the gtx960 and 970 are a better choice for 1080p, if you don't mind about fueling an evil company
>>
somewhat related; all fanboyism aside, if my 7950s can run 1440p on a 1080p panel with VSR well enough, does that translate to real world 1440p monitor performance? And where are the crossfire benchmarks for OP?

The thing about that is, when nVidia cards are thousands of dollars, someone else will come along and say
"Hey, I can hire up old AMD people, recruit some disgruntled nVidia types, put out decent cards for less and curb stomp them."
AMD's replacement isn't going to pop up over night, but if nVidia abuses monopoly someone WILL step up to undercut them.

I guess that's all I need to play cs all day.
>>
>>51493742
They do overclock, from my own experience they don't overclock as well as Maxwell gpus but you can still gain a decent amount of performance too.

As nvidia has gpu boost too, even from stock speed, you gain more with a 5% overclock on an AMD gpu than you would with a 5% overclock on a vidia gpu is something to consider as well.

The fury x is overclockable and now has unlocked voltage with sapphire utility, However as HBM is already pretty darn fast you don't gain much from overclocking it. And the core, does not overclock that much either.
