Fuck you guys that said an SSD was just a meme.

Its one of the best purchases I made so far. Everything is fast as fuck and even though there are no improvements in fps in games, some games like the witcher 3 run a lot smoother since they stream textures and data from the hard drive quite frequently.

Its also nice to know that my PC isn't bottlenecked by a slow mechanical HDD. Shit was frustrating when I would start up chrome for the first time and it takes 30 seconds while the HDD light is blinking like crazy.

Also for those using samsung ssd on windows 10, there is a new magician available that allows you to use rapid mode in windows 10 now.
>>
SSDs are amazing lol the only people that say they suck are poorfags
Like iPhone vs android, poorfags all over the place full of cognitive dissonance.
>>
Rapid mode is just a cheating mode for benchmarking purposes.
I bought an SSD and I don't feel like I've gotten my money's worth.

My startup times went from 40 seconds to 8.
Wow.
That was totally worth $70.
I would get up to make coffee while my computer boots.
Who actually sits in front of their computer while it boots?

don't SSDs have a write limit?
I mean if you are going to use them as a backup, which is going to end up being used as a read only device than i can see why buying an SSD might be the best thing ever.
For normal purposes, though, HDD are the way to go.

SSDs main advantage is speed. They do have a write limit but thanks to modern wear leveling strategies the user should use them just like a hard drive. They should last as long or longer than a hard drive in normal use.

nigga, do you even use your computer? everything is snappy as fuck compared to a mechanical hard drive. even simple shit like navigating the control panel is pretty much instantaneous.
>>
>>51483788
That only happens if your computer has to touch the mechanical drive, I have enough ram to load my whole O/S into ram and cache things in ramdisks, ,which is faster than the fastest SSD.

Should I buy an SSD for my laptop? The storage that came with it is a 1TB SSHD. I don't have much money (student) so I could probably only afford a 240GB SSD. The laptop doesn't have an extra space for another drive but it has an m.2 slot. Don't know what the size is, though.

Do you guys know of good and cheap 240GB m.2 SSDs? Any brands I should look out for/avoid?

I did. I just transformed the 1 tb SSHD into a external that I use for my laptop. I did it because I liked the boot speeds of an SSD.

Cloning a windows install is fine as long as said install has never booted up with both disks plugged in.
If Windows has "seen" it then it will get a drive letter other than C after the clone and the install will be hosed.

>>51485755
i fucking ruined it then, after fucking around for hours i finally got it to work like that
C: SSD OS

D: HDD STUFF

the optimal drive configuration is as follows.....

small boot ssd..... this only contains your windows install...

small software ssd.... this only contains your software installs

mechanical cache hdd... this only contains your cache files.....

mechnical file hdd..... this only contains your files. :P

the purpose behind such a setup is simple: 1. you want a boot SSD because they're epic, enough said.

2. you want a software SSD, because theyre epic, enough said.

3. you need a cache hdd.... because otherwise your ssds will waste precious read/writes .. and thus degrade their lifecycle.

4. you need a seperate file hdd from your cache hdd, as this means you can read/write to both of them simeltaneusly... avoiding a bottleneck.
>>

Autism galore, any decent SSD will last enough to be deprecated by another technology even if you use it for boot software and cache.

SSD is worth the cash as an OS drive and to run bloated programs, it's a very noticeable increase in speed for normal computer operations

I would still recommend HDD for large storage though, movies and music do not need fast speeds and cost per gigabyte SSDs are still not terribly efficient, buying a SSD over 500gb is asking for wallet rape.

Well, there's nothing wrong with that. If it works for you, that's fine. DESU, I trust HDDs a bit more, myself. I looked up my own SSD, and it appears that I can overwrite the drive about 3000 times. 78TiB.

I had an HDD that lasted over 6 years (still good, just slow) and I never even filled 320GB.

So, as long as you're not writing FUCKLOADS of anime, you should be fine.
Otherwise, get an external HDD.

>>51487382
I install tons of tweaking software, and I have a lot of it boot on startup. I also run a Dev Server.
Pair that with tons of other programs, and it's not fast.
Dump on the fact that my HDD was about 6 years old, SATA II, and it's even slower.

But, my 850 EVO, even though it's running in a SATA II slot, is still fast as shit.

And I even disabled things like main drive indexing, hibernate, don't use hybrid shutdown (I think...). Everything's way faster.

I actually don't know if this is a problem specific to the SSD I have or if I'm retarded and never noticed this sort of behavior all along, but here goes.

I notice that when my SSD is doing intensive writing processes, like I'm downloading a game off of Steam at 5MBytes/s or moving a really big file from my internal HDD to my main SSD that my entire computer performance slows to a crawl. I can't really do anything without it locking up until the download transfers are done. Is this an inherent weakness of SSD's or what?

>Fuck you guys that said an SSD was just a meme.
You are stupid as fuck.
It should already be a logical conclusion if you have any technical literacy at all that SSDs are good boot/performance drives.
For long term storage however they are a meme, as HDDs have dozens of times longer shelf lives, as in you don't need to charge an HDD with electricity by turning it on every few months like you need to do with an SSD in order to stave off any loss of data due to how each device stores data.

SSDs are for work/boot/performance.
HDDs are for storage and that's that.
At best, you could argue that HDDs are also good for really high task shit like RSS Feeds that constantly cycle dense amounts of data, as the same would make an SSD burn to shit and lower its life expectancy drastically due to wear-out.

Cpu performance usually doesn't bottleneck the ssd. The main problem is an old laptop not having sata 3.
>>
>>51486983

Hey. Grandpa. Do you research.

Transfer rate on RAID 0 arrays is comparable to SSD performance, but access time on SSDs will always be at least 100 times greater than and HDD array.
>>
>>51487400
SSD will keep data for at least a year at normal temperatures. Longer the colder it is.

>Crucial M500 480GB

>Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Both are used as main&only drives in the systems. By this rate I'm more likely to replace them because there's new faster shit, than because they ran out of writes. I still have a 64GB Crucial M4 put away in an old laptop I use occasionaly, that still has something like 80% health, after all these years. You know what IS a meme? SSD endurance being a problem at all for home users.
>>
>>51489133
Sata 2 does bottleneck an SSD.
Luckily the 95% of performance you retain is more than enough. Oh no, it's only 900% as fast as a HDD instead of 950%
>>
>>51482750
I really don't see a point in getting one, as my computer boots in seconds already. My programs load just as fast.
>>
>>51489301

What exactly does "health" mean here? An overall decrease in performance or just how close you are from getting a read-only drive?
>>
>>51489369
A rough estimate of writes left. Afterwards what you get is a read-only drive and then it dies.
>>
>>51489301
same for me, i suspect i will replace it with a 1TB ssd when they are a bit better value or just wait until i can get NVMe or something super fast

you might land one for $60 - $70 but $80 is a great deal.

i remember paying $300 for my first 120gb ssd.

just got a new samsung 850 evo 250gb m.2 for $75 at frys by price matching.

i just want to point out, if your primary usage is for games, write speeds don't matter much. read speeds matter the most.

>steam games installation
your write speed is your download speed since steam installs while it downloads
>optical drive installation
your write speed is your optical drives read speed.
>usb installation
your write speed is as fast as the usb device and interface read speeds

>tldr
your write speed can only go as fast as the read speed of the medium you're coping from. let it be internet, same drive, or another drive.

even as a boot drive i would focus more on read speeds than write speeds.

i do have four ssds myself and i rarely copy stuff from ssd to ssd. i just use one as my boot drive and the other three as game storage. i have two 4tb hard drives for long term storage and all my personal stuff like music and videos.
>>
>Fuck you guys that said an SSD was just a meme.
/g/ always praises SSD's.

>Its one of the best purchases I made so far.
Really? Better than you dedicated GPU? Better than your i5?

I ended up buying my first SSD (850 evo or whatever) a few months after the rest of my system. It's nice, but it's not as amazing as people made it out to be.

Although maybe if I went back to using an HDD I'd notice a huge difference.
>>
>>51487354
just get a 250gb SSD with OS installed and other essential programs and a 1tb HDD for everything else. you should not just rely on a flash drive.
>>
>>51490239
>Really? Better than you dedicated GPU? Better than your i5?

Not that anon but CPUs and GPUs have been getting iterative updates since forever. The immense improvements in response times of an SSD over HDD was a very big thing. Whilst caching on modern operating systems is very good if you have enough ram, there's still enough performance gained across all types of usage I feel.
>>
>>51487612
no problems here. what kind of cpu do you have? when you are downloading a game off steam, its also extracting and installing at the same time.
>>
>>51490239

>>51490048

having four ssd's, and been using them since 2009, i can easily say, a dedicated gpu and faster cpu is more important than a ssd if you're on a tight budget.

most people i see here than say ssd's are a meme are usually ones that are talking about budget strapped individuals.

a ssd won't magically increase your frames by an additional 20fps. a ssd won't increase your fps by 2. but a gpu and cpu would.

honestly only game i can think off the top of my head that saw somewhat of a decent increase was arma 2 and that was because the way the game loaded and streamed textures.

a ssd is just the "cherry" on top. its the finisher. it makes everything feel more fluid and thats because of its near zero latency and read speeds. games loading up in 4 seconds vs 20. system feeling overall more snappy because of near zero latency.

but if you're on a budget a cpu, gpu, and even ram are more important things to budget around than a ssd. get a ssd later.
>>
>>51490498
I upgraded from a 1st gen APU laptop to an i5 + 660 ti, so those two things were a bigger deal to me than the SSD.

But I didn't think of it from the perspective of someone who already had used a good CPU/GPU for years and years before getting their first SSD. That makes sense, thanks.

How the fuck do people manage so many host writes? My SSD boot drive is almost 4 years old and without caring about it in any special way (I even have a swap file on it) I'm around 20TB host writes.
>>
>>51490239
>Really? Better than you dedicated GPU? Better than your i5?

i built it not too long ago with an i5 and 970. upgrading to a skylake wouldn't give a boost like adding an SSD. i also recently added 8gb more ram to a total of 16gb. dont notice a difference except for when shitty programmed games or chrome have memory leaks.

so yea, once you have a decent PC, the biggest upgrade you can do is adding a SSD.
>>
>>51490527
for a laptop a ssd is a huge performance upgrade. not just for performance, but also battery life.

only to a degree.

what i find more appealing for a laptop is not just ditching that 5200 - 5400rpm laptop drive for a speedier ssd, but its lack of moving parts in a device meant to be moved around.

This whole data retention business refers to storing an SSD in a shelf or some shit, right? If you leave it in the PC and said PC is plugged will it still fuck up if you don't turn the PC for like several months?
>>
>>51492839
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

>As of 2014, most SSDs use NAND-based flash memory, which retains data without power. For applications requiring fast access, but not necessarily data persistence after power loss, SSDs may be constructed from random-access memory (RAM). Such devices may employ separate power sources, such as batteries, to maintain data after power loss.[4]

>flash memory
Flash memory uses captured electrons to store data. These electrons want to escape, and over time, as the cell wears down, they will, as nothing is truly non-conductive. The higher the temperature, the faster this will happen, with even as little as 1 week at 50 Celsius before they start leaking. Operational temperature also plays a role, as electrons flow with less resistance at higher temperatures, and thus reduce cell wear. Ideally, you'd operate an SSD at warm temperature, and store at cool. So if you're going on vacation, you should store all flash devices in a sealed bag in the fridge, else an unconditioned summer room could cause data corruption in a couple weeks.

> It highlights a non-operational, ambient temperature of 87 degrees Fahrenheit as the cause of failure in data retention in client-side (consumer) SSDs after only a year. Notice that’s not a few days. If you store your SSD someplace that averages 72 degrees Fahrenheit, a far more likely scenario, you’re talking two-years-plus according to this table.

Two years, hell, even one year is way more than enough time to keep you safe from data loss isn't it?
I really doubt the 1 week shenanigans. if SSDs were so problematic they wouldn't sell.
>>
>>51487502
Same here. Let me know when I can get a 1 TB SSD for $100.

I'm not poor either, I'm just really cheap.
>>
>>51496239
Yes, there's no problem for the average user. But then what about for storage and general archival? You've got these consumer SSDs coming out at 1TB+, and for what? Any data stored one wishes to keep on there has to be eventually transferred to HDDs or some other magnetic storage anyway.
>>51496239
>f SSDs were so problematic they wouldn't sell
No, you've got it wrong. Flash storage itself is problematic, storing electrons like that just is. They wouldn't sell if they had this as a big WARNING on all their products.
>I really doubt the 1 week shenanigans
That data is from Intel itself. It may be different for other manufactures, but not by much since it all involves limitations of flash storage. It's unrealistic, like a worst-case scenario for such temperatures to happen, but it still can occur long term unless you keep any and all SSDs powered on frequently. I'm just left wondering what's going to happen as SSDs get cheaper, and start piling up with data. Old HDDs still retain data years after, just mechanical aspects of them are subject to failure. But SSDs, well they'll just turn into bricks left unpowered, and yet the technology is being pushed as 100% superior to magnetic storage.
>>
>>51496239
Yeah, I'm finnish and I would experience my own data loss in +50°C, nevermind the SSD. Very unlikely that my SSD would see those temperatures while being turned off for a week.
>>
>>51496401
there are definitely holes in the plot I agree.
However as u said, no danger for the average user..and i'm fairly sure there will be some kind of new technology that will allow us to get the archivability of HDDs along with the speed of SSDs fairly soon.As soon as the problem of really needing archivable SSDs comes up, for that matter.
