I don't know if Spotydl is even legal, but I can't afford to pay, I'm wondering if there's a legal means to acquire music without paying. I was told Spotydl was legal and all that guff, but I don't know.

Well my way of downloading any kind of files pretty safely is to use a VPN and my most favorite premium service called premiumize.me.
This site is capable of offering you a good vpn and offer downloads of torrents via their servers so u don't seed while downloading.
It also supports many file hosters but atm a little buggy at uploaded to.

2. install utorrent server
3. Install sftp
You now have a torrent relay server that makes it impossible for your isp or any isp in the country to see your downloads. Just download the torrent to the server, then use sftp to get it to your computer privately. Easy as pie.

Well, you could simplify the setup by just making it a VPN server. But the main point is the network traffic generated by torrenting is not going over your home internet connection. Downloading things from your server via sftp hides what you're downloading from the isp. As does a VPN. Either would work.
Rip from YouTube, it's not illegal. I'm caching the songs to my hdd, it's just that I cache them in a different folder and they don't get deleted automatically.

I think it's illegal in the first place. Maybe not for you to receive the song, but for the unauthorized person to upload them.
Also youtube converts everything to a lossy format, and doesn't preserve the metadata of the audio, so I'd keep it as a last resort. But when you do use it, youtube-dl is great.

What's wrong with youtube-dl? Nearly every song I've ever wanted has been on yt ripe for the ripping, and the ones that aren't I've always managed to torrent.
