Because YIFY looks better than SD. I don't know what /g/'s obsession is with this. It's absolutely true, 1080p YIFY looks great for a casual view.

The ONLY problem I've had with YIFY for simple, mainstream shit is that the audio is sometimes *awful*. Other times it's acceptable.

I can download a YIFY movie in 20 minutes. A PublicHD movie is likely to take me hours or days, depending on how many people are still seeding it. YIFY is at least as good as Netflix was when I stopped using it.

The original YTS site and YIFY release group have shut down following legal pressure and won't be returning. This has left room for others to fill the gap, with YTS.ag leading the way. The site, which is linked to the EZTV hijack earlier this year, has asked several popular torrent sites if they can be the new YTS/YIFY.

TF spoke with several torrent site operators who say they will not allow YTS.ag to publish on their websites with a YTS or YIFY inspired tag, stating that it would be inappropriate.

RARBG isn’t allowing any YTS.ag rips on their site and ExtraTorrent is banning YTS and YIFY impostors as well.

“They are cheap groups who want to benefit and make a quick name by jumping on something that was already there,” the ET team tells us, adding that the same thing happened when aXXo disappeared several years ago.

But if you want really low bitrates like yify does, the artifacts become too numerous to hide under the rug (so to speak) and since they're irregularly spread, it gives a pretty shitty image.
Your best option to have a decent looking video at a pretty low bitrate is to spread the encoding artifacts as evenly as possible, and the way to do it is lower the resolution.

It's already been explained, but at absurdly low bitrates at high resolutions like what YIFY uses, artifacts become extremely numerous and distributed randomly to ruin the image. Lower resolutions and then upscaling results in a better picture.

You may not be able to tell because you're blind, but YIFY uses stupid tricks and garbage settings get those filesizes. They make still scenes look like they have decent quality, but then during motion is looks like shit. Here's an example of in motion frames where yify tanks the bitrate to make non-motion frames look better:

If you want something for casual viewing than get a scene 720p, they'll look much better and only be a few GB larger than YIFY.

All of their encodes have 96 kbps 2 channel audio. All of them. That's literally worse than youtubemp3.

- you want small file sizes, use scene SD rips.
