hi /g/,

I have decent programming experience. mostly with Java, C, PHP, JavaScript and Python. I'm also familiar with C#.

I want to get into game development - serious game development, even if the first few things I write right now are text-based or very simple just to get the basics (like animation heartbeat, best practices etc.) down.

I graduated in CS, so I am fully aware of data structures, db/db management, complexity etc.

what would be the best way for someone in my position to get into game development? what would be the best language to start with, C++, C# (with Unity probably?), Java? OO PHP or Javascript?

I know there's a shitload of information out there which I've already tried googling, but it would really help if anyone could give concrete suggestions so that I don't aim mindlessly.

From advice given to me, Unity's a good place to start.

This.

Also, what's stopping you from applying to a gamibf company?

unity can be scripted entirely in js and has a pretty big marketshare... there are a lot of js game frameworks out there. it's also the fastest interpreted language by a long margin. not a bad choice.

I have seen some really interesting browser games writen in OO JS. I'm aware that they're probably not representative of the way things are usually done.

It's complicated... I'm from Europe (non-EU) but studied in the US. I'm back home right now and am looking for a position, but game dev positions in Europe for immigrants are all expecting someone much more experienced than I am to make it worth their while.

one bump before I let it fall off, just want a little more input

game development is a horrible industry to be in but if that's your passion, go for it.

well, I don't like web programming and I application programming is a little too dry for me... that really only leaves me with game development.

learn modeling and texturing aswell. also learn UE4 and Unity. maybe ask in modding forums, a lot of people in there are devs and mod for a hobby. the nexusmods chat has a few people with knowledge in the field.
>>
a lot of people suggest newbies to start with Unity
I'm not a newbie anymore but does it actually help afterwards when you wanna try using any other engine or environment ?

It will drastically increase your chance of getting a job in the industry being familiar with Unity.

I don't do that for a living but that sure is interesting to know
