So, has anyone gotten an external GPU working with a laptop? Is it worthwhile?
Yes, wasn't for time-critical calculations though, so no gaming on it.
Nah. I kept hoping there would be a viable thunderbolt solution but it never happened.

If you can spend money on the adapter and GPU, you could also build a desktop for a bit more
>>51453657
Well, it seems to be a really niche solution. I think a thinkpad + eGPU combo would be nice for college, perhaps?

Guess its for people who only have a laptop and nothing else. Because if you already have a monitor, you better off building a desktop. I was going this route until i got a job
>>51453575
it seems like an ideal solution, but i've read that the bandwidth is throttled on modern gpus
>>51453575
If you are poor.
I was planning on giving it a go next time I buy a laptop with thunderbolt 3.
Sell the craptop and buy a cheap PC. Idiots are upgrading over Skylake and you can buy their old rigs and overclock them.
>>51453686
Because you really can't make do with playing some older game you enjoy for the two and a half hours you're in the airport, amirite?

No thanks.
>So, has anyone gotten an external GPU working with a laptop?
Yes.
>Is it worthwhile?
Yes, if you want to game on a non-gaming laptop and you don't mind less performance than a desktop equivalent.
Games which would run at 10-20 fps on my old Core2Duo laptop run at 30-50 fps with occasional spikes below 20 fps. I still game on my desktop, but when I travel abroad, I'll be using an eGPU at home.

build guide?

which precision is that ?

>still more mobile than a desktop solution
What is the problem anon? Dont just disagree because you see the word laptop.
>>51456206
I dont know anon, I dont own stuff like that. But they're selling it so someone but be buying it, right?
>>51453575
How does it work without another monitor ?
>>51456958 please tell US how van you sue them without using another monitor

Ben Heck to the rescue?
This guy from >>51457976
Works okay, my 7950 performs faster than my buddies R9 270x, so it's still mostly intact at least.
>>51457984
nvidia optimus, the card just sends its output to the intel graphics to display, on my expresscard setup (PCIe 2.0 1x) this leads to a MASSIVE decrease, even on my measly GTX 650 I tested it with. An external display is pretty much a necessity.
>>51453675
No.
>TFW Sony's innovative Vaio Z never caught on and Sony no longer makes premium laptops.
This thread had me thinking...
Do they make a laptop "shell" for lack of a better word that's just a screen, keyboard, and maybe trackpad? Screen would have a VGA or HDMI in and keyboard/trackpad would have USB tails. That way you could hook this up to a mitx setup or something.
I'm curious because with a decent carrying case this could make for a nice portable setup. Not really "use in an airport" so much as "use in a hotel"
>>51456958
>dem klipsches
mah nigga
and since i totally don't mind carrying around a psu and a gpu in a backpack, i can see myself doing this some years down the line. gonna have to be a bigass laptop screen though.
>>51453575
No, it's completely retarded. You're taking a PCI-E x16 card and limiting it to x1, it'll have the same bandwidth as an old AGP 4x bus from the late 90s.
>>51461091
oh no, your gpu will take a little longer to fill the vram while loading textures and polygons! whatever will we do?!?!
>>51460836
They put laptop parts in a box and sell it as a console.
>>51453575
depends on your cpu...
has anyone tried those thunderbolt egpus for macbook
are they cool yeah or nah?
>>51453575
You can build a desktop and buy a decent laptop for the price of doing that
>>51463586
That would require owning a macbook, why would you own a macbook?
>>51463741
>owning any laptop other than a macbook pro
no need to be a hipster here
>>51465038
Why would I buy a laptop I can't easily disassemble and one that thorttles due to heat?
>>51453575
I feel like it'd be worthwhile if they were confined into super low profile lunchbox PCs
>>51453675
Yeah probably.
>>51453575
I've been thinking of setting up an eGPU. My latitude XT2 has an ExpressCard slot and my IdeaPad S10 has a tool-free access panel above an mPCIe slot that I'd just put an mPCIe to PCIe adapter in, I could pop the panel off and attach a ribbon cable to the adapter
