Nobody is looking to steal PC's. Unless it's apple, worry about more common things
they are going to steal your computer regardless of what it looks like.

Pick up an old Pentium 3 cheap on ebay. You can probably get one cheaper than the price of a decent new case. It'll be old and probably beige, but it'll be a normal ATX case. It won't have front USB or audio, so you'll need a panel to stick in a drive bay. Those old cases are sturdy as fuck.
I used a not-quite-ATX Dell Pentium 2 case. Pic related is the same model but from google images because >lazy. I don't recommend that model as the case required minor dremeling to make a normal ATX I/O insert plate thingy fit.

A few years ago, the house I was living in for university was broken into over the Christmas holidays. Both my roommates' desktops were stolen, as were the TV, the Xbawks, even the fucking microwave. My LCD monitor was stolen but my beige box sleeper case and my Power Macintosh 7300 were untouched. Unbeknowst to the thieves, the shitty-looking Windows 98-stickered PC actually had about $800 worth of modern (for 2011) hardware in it.
I still don't know how they didn't notice the dual-DVI video card at the back.

If you're burgling a house, you don't take time to examine things too closely. You want to be out as quick as possible to reduce chances of being caught. It looks like a shitty old computer, you don't take it. It looks shiny and new, you grab.
Also Tyrone isn't going to be able to tell a GTX 980 Ti from a Rage 128. It's a box with plugs and shit on the back. If it looks shiny and valuable, he's gonna take it. If it looks like the hunk of crap his granddad has, he's gonna leave it.

I'm active duty US military. We get lots of cool and lame bennifets but a really nice one is the Veterans Assistance loan. Or whatever. Anyway you still have to have a credit score >600 and what happens is you get to buy a residential home within your means. Residential law defines residential as four units and less for some reason, so you can literally go around buying four-unit apartments for the same (really simmilar) ammount of effort as buying a single family home. The gov obviously doesn't want people like me abusing the system so the gotcha is that the buyer has to live in the property for a year.

I'd be out now, in a great financial position, with electronics skill I could utilize short term and easy-access to college for long term skills. Plus the VA loan so I'd have a source of income only a year out too.

Thieves are not going to want to carry a massive fucking tower full of hardware out of the house. It's both impractical and likely to get them spotted.
