Was 2005-2009 the golden age of the internet?
>>
>>51441138
yes
a bit too late if you ask me, if anything its when things started goin to shit
4:3 aspect ratio wasn't the norm
ads ads ads on websites
youtube going to shit
people using imageshack and PHOTOBUCKET for imageshosting

I do like the games around that time, flyff, mabinogi, ragnarok online, CS 1.6, console games and hype surround them.
>>
>>51441138
Socom 2 was earlier

I'd say 2002-2006

Newgrounds, ebaums, funnyjunk at their peak. And 4chan at the start was fresh as fuck

Remember coming across 4chin around 2007-2008 and people steady making OC memes, organizing funny and creative raids, people competing between each other in threads to be wittier / funnier / edgier (it still happens the difference is that there's no wit or humor). Then I look at todays 4chin and I break a little inside, what the fuck happened to us man

Thread filled with wannabe old fags who are too hyped up on their own opinions to embrace change.

Most of you remind me of the stories my dad told me about his grandparents' generation despising rock'n'roll because of the same reasons I see in this thread.

The world's changing, and you are wasting precious time if all you can do is whine about how deep inside your comfort zone you were, back in the good ol' days, and how far out of your depth you are today, instead of proactively making things change for the better.

I still remember having to hide my powerlevel when I played Quake online, used IRC, learned how to use Windows and DOS, and typed relatively fast. Today everyone spends all their time online and people actually don't shun tech-literate people. It's like I was a nigger during the times of slavery and immediately after it being outlawed everyone started wearing blackfaces.

Though what bothers me the most is that people have no idea how to actually use computers besides surfing the web, and all the content is made to suit these people. I like simplicity where possible but absolutely hate when programs or websites become crippled in usability so not to intimidate the less techy people.

Golden, or nostalgic (to you)?

People refer to the 50s as the golden age of television, but some will argue it was shit. The technology was primitive. And the industry was still trying to figure out what the fuck they were doing. Many programs were basically radio shows with cameras pointed at the hosts.
>>

>the industry was still trying to figure out what the fuck they were doing

This is why many things are great. It is still in the honeymoon phase and lots of new things are being tried out. As opposed to later on when everything becomes formulaic because it is the most "efficient" way to do something.

>ITT: 90's kids arguing whose teenage year was the peak year of the entire Internet
I'm from the late eighties, but I admit the peak of the Internet probably preceded all of us. By the early 2000's, most people on the Internet no longer understood how it works.

WE are (at best) the first wave of cancer that plagued the Internet. On top of that, people who joined in the early days of Web 2.0 probably view current state of social media with similar unwarranted elitism as you do.

The thing that bothers me the most is how my computer has problems with many websites, as they eat up resources.

Even google's homepage fucking sucks up CPU power without doing anything useful for me.
I'm really bothered by that, I wouldn't mind if websites looked like they did in web 1.0 if it means I don't need a supercomputer to browse the web.

Before the year 2000 the internet was actually "the secret club" that 4chan wishes it was. Also BBS systems could be considered more of a "secret club". 4chan was never remotely anything close to pre-2000 internet.
Nothing will bring those days back, there is nothing even remotely related today.
If you were not there, or old enough to appreciate it then you can never understand.

My first forray into the 'Net was bbs'ing with my dad on our C64.

And this was in Malawi, in the early 80's

We spliced into the telephone line from the british embassy which was right next door, and we racked up a decent phone bill for them.

Other fond memories include dialling random international numbers from payphones, using a bluebox my dad juryrigged.

Kids, just be happy things are evolving, and oldfags, be happy you were part of history.

My question is, since after 4chan was updating itself and since I disabled the greasemonkey scripts, is there a filter script out there so I can block this repeated trailer park turbo garbage?

Every 10 hours with this fucking nostalgia circlerjerk.

1. There is no "golden age" of anything. Why oh why is it that the golden age is always just when you were 14 - 19 ? Is it because you finally grew up and starting being able to see shit as shit? Why does it ALWAYS happen to be this particular time?

2. Nostalgia is a mental disease wherein you retroactively remove bad memories to defend your sanity and we end up being able to 100% change hideously bad sites/games/everything into something that was good.
>be there using it
>THIS FUCKING THING SUCKS ASS
>20 years later
>heh, this was all we had, it was ok I guess

3. Let's just say for the sake of argument that 1 and 2 were not true. Who fucking cares if the golden age has passed? It's over. Get over it. Or, make the same shitty secret club circlejerk that every other psuedo-agefaggot makes and get lost. And have fun once the other circlejerklets leave, you're fucked cause now you can't talk to anyone in the whole world, cause they won't "get it".

Yes I'm very mad. These threads are the same 10 fucking beige computer pics over and over again which don't change BECAUSE YOU ARE LIVING IN THE PAST. Look at the fucking comments in this thread.

"hurr hurr the golden age was 1995 - 2000"
"no it was 2000 - 2005"
"kid kid kid kid grandpa"

This doesn't do shit but make you the next generation of old people who make them incompatible with everyone and everything because it either is too new and works or is too old and doesn't because you can't satisfy this quantum nostalgia circlejerk shit show.

I'd agree, although I'd say around 2004-2007.

Social media wasn't so mainstream. Basically, it was for attention whores.
Broadband became more common.
Online gaming with high-speed internet, no bullshit social media integration, and no nickel-and-diming DLC was god-tier.

People still believed in keeping their privacy online (e.g. not letting anyone know your real name).
There were tons of great forums out there, which are now mostly dead because everyone moved on to 4chan and reddit.

Far less commercialization of the internet. Before you had to worry about ads all over the place. Now you have to worry about "native advertising", shilling, and viral marketing EVERYWHERE.
Speaking of infiltration: most of the internet surveillance programs we're fighting against weren't around then, and the ones that were, were not nearly as powerful as they are now. This also includes NSA infiltration of online communities.

Yeah, it is called when smartphones became the new hip thing.

It got millions upon millions of internet newfags online.
They infected every website of worth and destroyed them in a few short years.

Before that, most people weren't even going near computers besides the non-poor faggots and smart people.
Everyone else thought it was for nerds and dweebs.
Even the attention whores and other shit social-site fags stuck to those sites and rarely ever travelled outside of them.

Shows like Big Bunghole Theory certainly never helped either. Made being a geek fashionable, which destroyed the few remaining sites that were untouched by their shittiness because they ventured out of the few larger websites to smaller, more niche areas towards the end of the decade. (here, Reddit, streaming, torrents, etc.)
I wish they stayed on Facebook. DAMN YOU Mark for not making Facebook less shit.

Protip, 4chan was majority trips and names in 2003-2005. Lurk the fuck more.

This place only became an Anonymous hellhole when that moot faggot caved to world2ch shitposters that wanted to shitpost with zero consequence.

This site started off from 4 separate but similar communities: IRC, SA, the separate ADTRW site (since it went to shit) and Raspberry Heaven. All 4 identity based.
Not a single person gave a SHIT about the merits of Anonymous discussion.
This site was never set up with that use in mind.
Anonymous posting and anonymous discussion are 2 completely different concepts.
This site was the former, despite what that pretentious faggot moot tried to pretend is the reason he created this site when he let his fame get to his head. That TED talk was fucking awful. Holy shit what a cringe-inducing fuck he became. MUH NIMBUS DISCO-SHUN

Most of the original site left this place when he forced anonymous and made their own sites and communities, some of which are still alive today.

The internet died with smartphones, because they gave easy web access to nigs, poors, and normies.

Everything is social media bullshit, because all the poor white trash and normies were now able to get online constantly. Nigs were able to get online without having to use the library computer, which made things worse.

If it weren't for smartphones, the internet would still be mostly nerds and camwhores. Which was a perfect symbiosis to keep things running well for both groups.

Man, imageshack died so hard.
It is a horrible disaster now.

Admittedly it went to shit around 2007 time when the new UI came around.

I had 3 separate imageshack accounts.
They don't even work now.
They used to work until a few years ago, but fuck knows what they did to the site now.

Of course, I say that, practically every image I had uploaded since 2004 onwards is more or less gone now.
There is like 5% of images left on it that still work. LOL DOOD RAID.
Fucking awful administration man.
They really gave no shits about peoples files or backups.

Of course, the worst part was them forcing so many stupid ads down peoples throats instead of just doing responsible advertising.
That sort of happened with loads of sites though. So many of them throwing shit like pop-up ads everywhere. FUCK.
The worst were plugin ads, especially Flash.
"SAY SOMETHING. WHAAAT?"
Die. DIE. JUST DIE.
Couldn't block those ads hard enough.

>When I became an adult

What's with the huge fluctuation of years, since every single post in this thread says the golden age is definitely a thing? Could it perhaps be that number of age was when you grew up enough to judge things as they were? This thread and all like it should be titled, "When was the golden age of the internet... for you?"

The sad part is, unlike people who nostalgiafag over old video games, you can't actually go back in time to experience the precious good old days as you are now. It's hi-fucking-larious to see retrofags irl nostalgiafag over old games, then be put in a place where they have to play them, and after 10 minutes they make that "uh oh, looks like this game was shit the whole time" face and then make up some excuse why they can't play it, for example it has to be on a CRT TV. And still say the game was good.

Anyway see you next thread in a couple days when this is re-made. technology "doubles in power" every few years so it would only be logical that psuedo-nostalgiafagging would also increase exponentially along with it.

I can't wait to see what this will be like in 10 years. Imagine being a psuedo old person to someone owning shit that isn't even 5 or 6 months old yet.

Strangely enough, that's about when not-so-shitty ADSL started to become a thing in my country. It was also about the time Facebook starting making its way around people here, too. Genuinely speaking, however, 2005-2009 had some insanely good films, games, and web content.

The countless hours of anime I've watch this week and this thread are starting to make me feel very alone and very old.

Immediately after it being outlawed it's the 80s/90s you mean. Seriously, where did that black people are cool thing come from?

I like a lot of older games better, I played them as a kid and I play them now on my CRT. Also have you ever considered the more flooded with people the internet got the less diverse and interesting it got and the more regulations were slapped down? This whole thing is about gentrification not nostalgia googles.

>tfw you only got access to the internet when you moved out in 2008
I don't even use it all that much. If it were to disappear now, I don't think my life would be significantly different.

I get the whole 'your perception of a 'golden age' is relative only to your personal cognitive development benchmarks' thing, even though I sort of disagree with it as a simple minded way of dealing with the disparity of the same exact complaint, but, here's the thing

When there are more 23 year old women in tight black jeans and red lipstick walking to and fro wherever on their smartphones on the internet mulling over the most moronic slate or guardian articles (at best) than there are individuals who are genuinely interested in participating in some type of high context culture, then the internet has gone to shit.

That's all there is to it and if you disagree you're just being a turbofag contrarian against contrarians who are against contrarians. In other words, exactly what you think you hate.
