I got a used sony with a battery dock for $300, aus.
Gives 10 hours with wifi on and low brightness. Second gen i7. Amd gpu. 13 inch screen.

For uni it need to run GIS software.
For personal use it needs to play chinese cartoons.

It has served me well and still works fine.
The main things I like about it is the ridiculous battery life, non ultrabook cpu and compact size. It seems like nobody is releasing 13" and under laptops with normal cpus anymore though, everything i ultrabooks.
