Gentoo, LFS or Arch if you're lazy and useless.

Ubuntu or mint if you dont want to be dissapointed at start then switch to arch, debian, gentoo or whatewa

this

ubuntu, suse, fedora and debian-stable are good and stable.

elementary OS is a bit newer but interesting. kind of an OSX ripoff tho.

wouldnt suggest arch, gentoo or similar unless there's a reason you need it.

good hardware or old hardware?

if good -> ubuntu unity
if old -> lubuntu (it's light on resources)

OK being honest here I'd say Arch. It's gonna be a pain in the ass in the beginning but you're going to learn a lot in the process getting it setup. If you don't have time to invest initially I'd say ubuntu or Linux mint
>>
In all seriousness, all of the good Linux distributions are probably not the best if it's your first time using something other than Linux. I fucking hate everything about ubuntu but it's simply the best if you're a n00b. Use a spin though fuck unity.

OP there is only misery and broken shit on the other side.
But you will see for yourself I guess

Ubuntu is still best for beginners.
>>
is there a stripped down version of ubuntu?

i hate how it comes with a thousand stupid apps per default

i tried removing the (i think) the scanner app and it literally wrecked the entire system because it was part of some core functionality package

so stupid

I think low-speed C2D is about when you'd start looking for something lighter than Unity.

Seriously, just go with Ubuntu.

lubuntu

running it right now, does a pretty good balance between the 10 billion packages of ubuntu and the "here's your command line" of arch

You've been wew'd, lad. Ubuntu is the way to go for 90% of people.
