elementary OS is a bit newer but interesting. kind of an OSX ripoff tho.
wouldnt suggest arch, gentoo or similar unless there's a reason you need it.

OK being honest here I'd say Arch. It's gonna be a pain in the ass in the beginning but you're going to learn a lot in the process getting it setup. If you don't have time to invest initially I'd say ubuntu or Linux mint
In all seriousness, all of the good Linux distributions are probably not the best if it's your first time using something other than Linux. I fucking hate everything about ubuntu but it's simply the best if you're a n00b. Use a spin though fuck unity.
