I'm seriously debating if I should buy one of these, because quite honestly the movement underneath is nothing special at all. If I was going to get a quartz chronograph, it would be a meca-quartz.

Why the fuck must everything be special or unique?
Just buy it if you like the look.
Of course the watch autists here will whine you to hell for "overpaying" for a generic movement.

None that you can't get in North America for basically the same price. You should try looking for vintage watches in thrift stores, because Japs hate used watches and as a result you can get some excellent stuff for far less than it would cost you on eBay.

It's not two-screen, it's two watches on one strap. I think one out of the two was an original F-100 and the other was just a prop molded from it.

Interestingly wearing two or more watches for multiple alarms is common now for astronauts, but this was in 1979, and I doubt Soviet cosmonauts in the Salyut programme were doing this with early quartz digitals (Americans had no manned launch capability from 1975 to 1981).
>>
>>51425336
Well, making a limited run tends to be more expensive than producing tens of thousands of the same thing

But really, its probably just because they can charge so much.

>>51425421
Depending on where he lives though, it might be a wise idea to buy any JDM watch he wants while he is there. VAT and customs can be ass.

Used stuff in Japan is great tho, they're really careful with their stuff usually and they're always very honest about the shape of the items. Its actually a small culture shock, they'd list an item as "damaged" when it has a somewhat removable stain, etc.

Woah, a lot of interest in the Seiko Giugiaro reissue I posted about in the last thread. The reissue is cool but way overpriced considering it would likely incur import charges too, for half the cost you could get a more standard 7a28, which is still very unique in how it looks. I got mine for £60 (through luck), ironically the way the bracelet is designed reminds me slightly of another Giorgetto Giugiaro design, the DeLorean DMC-12.

anyway, sure it is, though it mostly looks a bit cheap

I'm not sure _why_ the pilots of the old times didn't have their watches attached to the dashboards, maybe they used to break relatively often and thus needed to be really easily replaceable or something. They also needed to be anti-magnetic. They needed to be set to a rather precise time, so maybe it would be too inconvenient to have to do that in the cockpit.

Or maybe no one just thought of having a cradle for a pocket watch there, while you're a genius 100 years late. Or maybe the planes shake too much and that'd cause problems for mechanical watches.

In terms of pilots watches that have been given to soldiers: you are not equipping a plane. You are equipping a soldier. That soldier may have to eject, he needs a watch. You can't simply have a clock in the plane and expect that to be good enough.

I do find it funny how you're not going to fucking google or learn anything about this but instead just open your uneducated mouth and spew nonsense about it. You know even commercial airline pilots today are required to wear a watch? Just because you're not capable of working out the reason why a pilot should always be wearing a watch doesn't mean there isn't one.

I can't tell what any of that is except the Seiko 5 but why do you have the exact same watch with and without date? And is that pocket fedora a stopwatch?
>>
>>51428727
It is a stopwatch. I wanted to get a mechanical chronograph, but it was much cheaper to get a commie stopwatch.

The watch with the date is a hand wind Timex made in the early 70s. and the one without the date is a Rateka that I do not wear often because I usually check the date more than the time.

The one on the brown band is a Poljot:

>chronograph
is there any difference between a "watch" and a "chronograph"?
>>
>>51428810
A chronograph is a stop watch. You push a button to start/stop/reset.

You're thinking of chronometer, which could be a word for any timekeeping device, but is actually used for only devices that are certified to have a specific level of accuracy.
>>
>>51428810
Chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch built in.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronograph :

"he term chronograph is often confused with the term chronometer. Where "Chronograph" refers to the function of a watch, chronometer is a measure of how well a given timepiece performs: in order to be labeled a chronometer the timepiece must be certified by the COSC, the official Swiss Chronometer testing institute,[15] after undergoing a series of rigorous tests for robustness, accuracy and precision under adverse conditions. A simple watch, without the stopwatch functionality, can be certified a chronometer, as can a clock, for example a ship's clock used for navigation."

I way overpaid on the GQ because I'm dumb with auctions. Arguably I paid a bit much for the KQ but I think it was totally worth it. They're pretty much some of the nicest quartz movements and watches that have ever been made and they were the top of the line for Seiko at the time. They're from when quartz was a hot new technology that was actually desirable so Seiko actually made an effort to make them good watches. They're also very unique looking and high quality, I like them.

The price isn't worth the quality and respect mix.

People who buy rolexes are tryhards buying the traditional "look at me" watches instead of something more tasteful but equally recognised by the people you're trying to impress.

It's the same as when you walk into a dining room and you can see one shanky bastard in an expensive but poorly fit and poorly worn suit, you can just tell that despite the expense, it's new money on an unrefined person.

Yeah dude just get a job with them and smoke weed and deliver lukewarm pizzas every night for $7.25/hr plus tip for a couple of months and you'll get a Rolex.

No but really it's a pretty old-school tradition to give a nice watch as a retirement gift to an employee who has worked for a company for a long time. Some companies will even be tasteless enough to stamp the watch with their logo.

No, it isn't? A 40mm diver is pretty comparable to a 40mm watch that doesn't have a big bezel, since the dial is a big thing when it comes to how it wears, the bezel not so much (unless you've got really small wrists and it still manages to be simply 2big)

that doesn't seem to have big lugs or anything extra around the bezel, so it should be quite comparable to a 420 case amphibia (pic related) (though it does have a wider strap)

I can get a Panerai Radiomir replica with Miyota 9015 movement for around $700. Worth it?
>>
>>51435289
no
>>
>>51435289
That's a counterfeit, not replica.
>>
>>51432142
Better than what some people get.

My friend's dad worked at Royal Bank of Canada for 40 years, and was unceremoniously fired on trumped-up charges because his boss wanted to eliminate his position in order for his division to meet cost targets.

>>51434120
Which one did you end up getting?
>>
>>51435289
That's worth 400 at most, not sure why you'd get a 47mm panerai if you don't have 8" wrists though.

I'm not sure what's with the WUS tier FAKE WATCHES ARE FOR FAKE PEOPLE attitude in the threads lately either.
If I was in the market for a panerai, I'd sure as fuck rather have an asian 6497 + ok build quality for a touch above 200 usd or dank materials and modified movement for 350ish than pay Richemont 20 times that or more.

That said 44/47mm panerai homages are pretty accessible and customizable so there's not much point in getting a panerai rep (unless it's in exotic materials) in the first place.

Stop meme-ing please.
>>
>>51435456
I never quite understood why is Panerai so well loved. The design is nice but i really can't fathom why they cost so much.

Don't they use regular ETA movements in them?
>>
>>51435544
Mostly marketing. They gave their watch to stallone to shill in several movies.
Some people really like the design, because it can be seen from far that they are able to spend so much on a watch (kek).
They had a scandal with one of their special editions and simple eta movements.

A black 5856 from 1977, as seen here in the Seiko catalogue from the same year.

I've passed on a lot of other King Quartz before finally buying this one, I wanted a textured black or blue dial with hooded lugs and an original signed bracelet in very good condition with no signs of fading, preferably a Daini rather than a Suwa.

This was the first listed on eBay that fit the bill in 4 months of almost daily searches, I'll have paid £100 for it once I've paid the import charges which is slightly too much but it'll be nice to finally get the watch I've wanted.

They're big and bold I guess. Also spoopy heritage they (and paneristi) shill a lot, to the point of describing axis frogmen saboteurs as "heroic".

The very first ones (During the 40/50s) used Rolex / Angelus movements and were essentially Rolex made in all ways but the dial / design.

ThenI really don't know much what happened until they were bought by Vendome who later changed name to Richemont group who indeed did use ETA movements.
I think it was in 2012 they started to do in-house movements which are pretty well made from a technical standpoint - long power reserve, quick set hour etc etc but they're fucking gigantic, to the point of only really fitting in Panerai watches. And not very impressively decorated, which one might expect a hand wind movement in a watch closer to 10k usd to be.

My watch is listed as 58,000¥ which against the historical exchange rate of the ¥ to $ would mean around $215 in 1977, at the same time a Rolex Air King was sold in 1977 for $295.

Mako

I really want to buy a Deep Blue because the sale is so fucking good but all their watches I like the design of are so huge or lame swiss quartz. I might get the 42mm alpha marine but $300 is kind of a lot for me to spend right now.

If you've got the money, get an Anonimo instead, it's made by the folks that Panerai laid off when they moved from Florence.

You have cute enough wrists to pull it off.

Eh. It's not really that small on you another mm or two and it would be perfect.

Meanwhile the mako is too large for you, looks like a clock rather than a watch

Hey, let's take a Swiss quartz movement, assemble it in Detroit, use some off the shelf straps from Hadley-Roma, a case from whereever, and sell it for $2,250.

What if you work at Rolex ?

The Mako doesn't have lug overhang though, i like the size, but the perfect size for me is the SKX013 size.

They double stamp all the Rolex locations on the dial.

All manufacturer's photos look bad.

It's the same reason why I never understand why this board fucking loves Seiko and their shitty Rolex Submariner and Oyster Perpetual "tributes". At least wearing a Panerai one won't be mistaken as someone who is too poor to buy the real thing and instead buy cheap gook clone instead.

When posters get mad at swiss watchmakers, it's hard to tell where the legit complaints end and the sour grapes begin.
>>
>>51438619
It's ugly as sin. At least the Panerai looks better.

That would be a nice gift for your mom or gf or something, it looks pretty nice. I don't think you can pull it off though, I'm all for small vintage men's watches but that's just too small and it's clearly a women's model.

I have scratches almost exactly like that on the bottom left lug of my 007. Spooky. I've also banged up the sides of the case a bit and the bracelet is getting pretty scratched. Somehow the bezel insert and crystal still look perfect though so I guess I'm not a believer in hardlex.

Slow thread for a slow day at work.

I caught myself staring at my watch for a good five minutes just watching the seconds hand tick away at 5bps.

Panerai is literally the embarrassing 2000's equivalent of Rolex in the 1980s. Fuck off with your entirely marketing driven, brand aspirationalism, ETA low grade (*cough* in house) mountain jew dollar extraction devices.
