What happens when one of your components fail? You throw away the entire laptop and buy a new one because the latest models have all the components including battery soldered into a monolithic structure.
Even the older macbooks could only use Apple hardware because OSX is so fragile and pussy whipped that it cannot handle a variety of hardware. So they fine tune it to only Apple hardware to stabilize the user experience.
Apple is so fucking scared of releasing OSX to other computers because they know their OS is inferior and cannot handle the diverse hardware mix that Windows has done for decades.

I have replaced the ram, HDD and fan of my HP laptop and it works normally even after 3 years of abuse. My battery didn't inflate and destroy my trackpad because most companies have a functioning brain and use removable batteries.

Why does hackintosh require a very very specific type of hardware to work properly? and even then many people are afraid to update their version and a quick google search reveals thousands of people with no sound and other hardware not being detected by OSX.
If OSX was truly marvelous and Apple just wanted to maintain exclusivity, anyone could run hackintosh regardless of their hardware.

If you don't feel comfortable taking apart a laptop, I'm sorry but you don't belong on /g/.
I've been doing computer repair ads on craigslist for years now and worked in a repair shop. Number one thing that fails in laptops is the hard drive, followed by the LCD cable, gfx card (if dedicated), the charge port, then battery. I've seen a bad mobo like twice, but if the gfx card fails it's a no-go for repair as well so maybe that's what you meant.

Usually that doesn't break the trackpad, it's just pushing against it and causing it to not make contact. Replacing the battery with a good one fixes this problem 90% of the time. It's still fucking stupid design though I agree.

I have never seen inlated batteries in normal laptops, only shitty macbooks
I do feel a slight temptation to try out Windows 10 but the problem is that my storage drive is dm-crypt/LUKS/ext4 and I don't have another drive on which to put my data temporarily. So I'm stuck on Linux, not that that's a problem. Plus Windows is so convoluted and opaque, and has no decent package management, not to mention the spying.

I actually love windows 10.
I had to switch back to windows 7 though, because there were a lot of issues with windows 10. For example I was testing GTA V and found out that if I ran it at anything above 30 FPS (Disabled vsync) then it would immediately make my CPU usage go to 100% and crash shortly later.

The last Microsoft OS that had decent hardware support was Windows 7, Windows 8+ removes support for a lot of stuff for no reason, or just breaks stuff that shouldn't be broken, and doesn't even have good support for new stuff
Even anything based on Linux works much better drivers wise
