So I'm upgrading my potato-ass computer and i need a better power supply. I built this thing from garbage, literally parts other people threw out, so I have no real attachment to this thing but I -need- to get a better PSU in this thing.

It takes the long rectangle profile type (no too unlike the one in the pic), but the only power supplies I can find that are within my shoestring budget, have the (500w) output I want, and have decent reviews are all the normal square block profile type.

I was thinking about getting a square one and just letting it sit outside of the case as long as everything connects just fine. Thoughts? Is this a prudent idea? Also, any suggestions on brands or keywords I can use to find the profile that might fit this thing correctly?

its in an acer aspire ax3400g-u4802 case with whatever atx board that comes with. an amd athlon ii x2 250 dual core running at 3.1ghz (pulled from another, identacle box). it has 10 gigs of DDR3 ram (all four sticks different brands, just for shits), and a built in geforce 9200.

I think the PSU is going on me and i want to put a gtx 660 ti in. but the current supposed wattage of my dying PSU is only 220w and i want to put in a 500w.

1. Take out of case
2. Install real power supply
3. Place in cardboard box.

Where the hell did you get a 660 Ti these days?

You'd have to take it out of the case to fit a card anyway, so welcome to the cardboard box club.

Best bet would probably to get a card off craigslist. You can pick up 6950's for $65 if you're lucky. (if you're very lucky you can score like I did -- GTX 580 for $15)

Ballin', i almost thought that was a joke, the box thing, but i do have some nice dairymen's crates sitting around.

Milk crate build's a classic, though I prefer the cardboard box for sound isolation.
After you've disassembled the computer, rip the face off your case so you have the power button and jacks.
