Is there any custom ROM for the Note 4 (N910F) which brings the Note 5 functions, but it's not buggy?

The ones I've seen so far have kinda big issues, like the fingerprint scanner doesn't work or camera modes don't work.

I would be willing to consider even paid custom ROMs if they really are premium, made by pros not a bunch of hobbyists from Deccan.

Europe, I get them on ebay unlocked, so I guess no specific deals that you get in the US.

Basically I wanted to get a Note 4, which I like, but it seems Samsung's support for the Note 4 is beyond shit.

So, I like the HTC design and the Note 4 guts, but there's no phone that has both. And I'm hearing so much about issues with HTC phones.

It seems 2015 is not a good year to buy an android phone.
>>
How much does a phone has to cost to be cost-effective to get it on a plan? On average?

I say this because my mom has some family stupid plan and ATT fags keep mailing me offers and I feel like I'm beig rused

Is 35 a month for a Moto G and a Data Plan too expensive? For two years of course.
>>
>>51397133
In all seriousness, what do you do on your phone that a $300 phone can't do?
How much difference is there in performance?
Lenovo k3 note seriously looks like a really good deal, the mt6752 is more powerful than the sd615, and it has custom rom support too.

Might be a poorfag thing to say, but does that make it any less true?
>>
>>51397282
poorfags buy expensive things to give off the image of not being poor whilst having to suffer as a result of their expensive purchase, a true richfag will just buy the phone that takes care of his needs without breaking the bank, this is how they stay rich and not be "nigger rich"
>>
>>51397330
That's partially true. Since I'm not gonna change phones every 2 years, I would rather pay more to get a really good one every 3-4 years. I don't see what's wrong with that.

If I wanted to look hip, I'd get an iPhone, but the thing is I hate iPhones, I wouldn't use one even if I got it as a gift. I'd sell it and get something else.
>>
>>51397367
at this point, anything that has a SD800 series, the Intel Z35XX chips, or octo-core SoC will last at least 3 years, this is coming from a LG OG daily user
>>
>>51397367
But after 2 years your phone will be very outdated no matter what you buy now. Sd820 is out.
Best thing to do is buy a midrange phone and upgrade after 2 years.
If you keep it longer, you're going to start running into issues. My mates nexus 4 has just started to develop dead spots on the screen.
My nexus 5 battery capacity is greatly reduced and I don't trust any sellers online to replace it.
>>
>>51397282

I bought the 5X primarily because of the amazing camera and fingerprint reader. The performance is slightly better than the old 5 which I came from (although 5X has encryption turned on so it's no a fair comparison).

I use my phone for a lot of things. SMS, Facebook messaging, Slack channels, GPS, music streaming, and phone calls, plus general web browsing and gaming. It needs to be a great device, and I'm willing to spend a little more to get that. I just wish they would have made the 5X more expensive and given it even better internals. Fuck giant phones.
>>
>>51397426
Why do you need encryption on?

I guess I don't live in some nigger crime nest where people get mugged all the time

Oh no, the cardio bunnies at whole foods are gonna steal my phone!

Fuck I love being a stay at home dad in a wealthy area
>>
>>51397176
>Basically I wanted to get a Note 4, which I like, but it seems Samsung's support for the Note 4 is beyond shit
Isn't it getting Marshmellow?
>>
>>51397584

It's on by default in Android 6.0 on new devices.

>I guess I don't live in some nigger crime nest where people get mugged all the time

I sort of do, but I'm not worried about getting mugged, I'm worried about losing it or forgetting it somewhere. Plus if a cop ever wanted to pilfer through it, I'd love to smugly be able to tell him to go fuck himself.

There are conflicting informations on that. Different sites say different things.

Most likely, someone will make an unofficial custom ROM much earlier.
>>
>>51397330
>>51397367
>>51397418
The best thing to do is get an expensive phone and resell it for a new top of the line model every year.
You will still get a decent price for a year old flagship and you only have to top up about a $100 or so every year. It's better than keeping your flagship for 2-3 years when its value would've depreciated drastically and you end up having to spend a few hundred dollars for a new flagship.
Much better value to do it annually and the best part about this is you get a new device with new tech every year.
>>
>>51397874

actually this leak from the other week has pretty much been confirmed, someone managed to get the 6.0 update on a T-mobile Note5. If it's ready already that means this document of a december 2015 6.0 update for the Note5 is legit. And it also means the Note4 on this list is also legit.

Looking pretty good that the note4 will be fairly quick to get 6.0
>>
>>51398003
Doesn't work in the US. You pay far higher "line fees" and end up spending more money than if you just paid per month for whatever phone and traded it in to your carrier after 18 months.
>>
>>51398055
Yeah, why did they list only the Asian version of the Note 4 (SM-910G), though?

Does Samsung release the same updates at different times for Europe, Asia, America etc?
>>
>>51398099
Yeah, but then they have to go through your carrier depending on your carrier.
>>
Help me pick a phone /g/. I really only have two requirements.
1. Must be $400 or less
2. Must be rootable with custom ROMs and an active dev scene
3. Must be CDMA compatible

Most flagships these days are rootable and have large dev scenes, so I'm not too worried about that. From my requirements, the only phone I think is viable is the moto x pure. Any other phones I'm missing?
>>
>>51398099
I believe all of those model numbers are the unlocked international model numbers.

However, the fact someone on t-mobile managed to get updated to 6.0 is pretty good evidence it applies to more than just the international unlocked versions.
>>
>>51398125
What if you bought the phone unlocked, do you still install the version provided for your carrier? Or is this version usually made only for the phones sold by that carrier?

Not sure what the implications are.
>>
>>51398154
No, you'd just use the updates for your unlocked phone.

They do not.

And they use the Exynos 7420 in all versions of the Note5 and S6.

AT&T Note5 here
>>
>>51398610
actually, now that I think about it, they might sell the Exynos 7420 to Meizu for the new Meizu Pro 5.

But that's it.
>>
>>51398648
Odroid uses exynos, doesn't it?
Then again, that's not a phone...
>>
>>51398648
Cool.

I hope Best Buy keeps the Note 5 at that 49-149 price with a 2 year contract. It ends up being about 100-200 dollars cheaper over 2 years than paying for it month by month.

Do you use adguard? I'm wondering if its as good as adaway. If it is, I could live without rooting.

Also, how good are the removing bloat features that Samsung has now for turning off crap?
>>
>>51398582
you got sauce to back that up?
>>
>>51398674
That is the older gen Exynos, the current Gen is not sold to anyone else but Meizu as far as I know.

The Exynos 8890 might be sold to more people, but seeing as it's early benchmarks are so promising, samsung will probably want all the chips they can get theirs hands on.
The Exynos 8890 is looking to be pretty monstrous. 7,400 multicore and 2,250 single core in geekbench. And the Mali T880-MP12. Which is retardedly large. The Exynos 7420 for example used the T760-MP8 (the MPx is the number of shader cores). So 30% more shader cores on a newer process at higher speeds.

Samsung might have another dominant year over Qualcomm.
>>
>>51398732
I want to see that as well, I didn't think that the 808 throttled at all.
>>
>>51398749
it doesn't, none of the reviews of the XPE have said it throttled
>>
Dont mind me.
Im just a faggot.
>>
>>51398732
The 810 would be even worse than this, but the 808 still jumps up and down and up and down all over the place compared to the Exynos.

Samsung just had a technological advantage this generation, the Exynos 7420 is built on a 14nm process while the SD810 and 808 are built on a 20nm process. This means that at the same clock speed, the SD810 will use more power and run hotter. No matter what.

Physics win in this case.
>>
>>51398796
So what, basically people don't notice throttling in the shitty youtube reviews?
>>
I got a nice new plan from Tmobile yesterday: Unl text, 100 mins, Unl data (First 5 GB 4g LTE) for $30 pre-paid. The mins isnt even a problem if you use VOIP. Available only if you are a new subscriber ( they have no way to verify this) you buy a SIM card starter kit for $30 at Walmart.
>>
>>51398795
Of course, you can't even afford a tripcode.
>>
>>51398854
oh and the SIM card activation kit comes with first month of airtime so the SIM itself is free
>>
>>51398845
Yeah because in most uses you aren't seeing CPU use at high levels for extended periods of time. However, it DOES throttle when you put it under load for more than a few minutes, and it can certainly be noticeable to people doing more CPU intensive tasks like gaming or 4k recording.

I'm not saying it's a shit SoC or people shouldnt buy it, but they should be aware that it does throttle due to thermals and its a product of the older process it was built on (20nm instead of something like 14nm).

Compared to Exynos 7420, SD810 and SD808 throttle terribly.
>>
>>51398891
If all I do is play arcade games, watch the occasional youtube + netflix ( will happen more if I get a Note 5 for sure, I have a S4 now), would I ever even see that?
>>
>>51398845
Most people won't do anything to cause it. Everyday use only causes it to use max frequency for seconds at a time when the user touches the screen. It would only really be noticeable during gaming and even then you'd need to be playing an intensive game because something like candy crush will run flawlessly even if it throttles.
>>
>>51398913
No, most likely not.

However the note5 when paired with Samsungs GearVR, allows you to watch netflix in VR, which DOES require a LOT of CPU and GPU power.

It turns your S6, S6 edge, Note5, or S6 Edge+ into a VR headset.

An actual decent one that is pretty solid for watching movies/TV in VR.

The phone is a bit too underpowered for games, but for media and fucking around with VR, it is a no-brainer for $100. (assuming you already have one of the requisite phones.)

fair enough, the kinds of games it can do will be fairly basic compared to HTC vive and Occulus rift however.

I guess so, since I certainly can't see the logic in your post. How am I blind if I can see something too clearly?

>>51399169
>Now if only Cardboard was even remotely as good as Gear VR or even the same quality of apps.
Cardboard glasses have magnifying lenses in them which I think even the better ones have. The size of the picture will be the same, so if I can notice the bad quality in the screen I probably will notice it in another mask. There's just not enough PPI for a crystal clear picture.
>>
>>51399313
You realize all the phones that work in the gear VR are 1440x2560 displays.

Not 1080p

Also, Gear VR is far more than just cardboard, dont act like you know what something is when you obviously have never used it.
>>
>>51399313
>Cardboard glasses have magnifying lenses in them which I think even the better ones have. The size of the picture will be the same, so if I can notice the bad quality in the screen I probably will notice it in another mask. There's just not enough PPI for a crystal clear picture.

You have never tried a good Gear VR demo. The lenses in most Cardboard and plastic variants are much worse quality, have low FOV, and are more blurry the farther away you look from the center. So the "size of the picture" won't be the same. These things are called headsets or HMDs (head-mounted displays) and "mask" is not the correct term. Cardboard works with any phone because there is almost no optimization around the software and hardware with the phone and headset. With Gear VR, everything from the phone, to the software, to the headset, is optimized.

The effect is that you get a very high quality image, very low latency, and applications that can only be run on Gear VR with the appropriate phone because the software is optimized for the hardware.

>Cardboard glasses have magnifying lenses in them which I think even the better ones have. The size of the picture will be the same, so if I can notice the bad quality in the screen I probably will notice it in another mask. There's just not enough PPI for a crystal clear picture.

The part where you talk about noticing it in another mask (the GearVR being this "other" mask since you were literally just talking about it in the same post).

The GearVR ONLY works with 1440p phones, meaning no, you wouldn't

>>51399409
Also with Gear VR, you have low persistence and timewarp. You essentially never get stutter, even if the app starts lagging, so the world seems like it is solid rather than moving around when it lags behind your head's movements. And low persistence ensures there is no blur in what you see. No other mobile VR solution has low persistence or timewarp. Also the sensors in Gear VR are perfection. There is no drift or imprecision at all.

If the phone PPI stays the same I will most likely be able to see those pixels in another mask which wouldn't even have to be cardboard. It just magnifies too much for such low PPI. This is still my phone with 1080p screen, not 1440p suddenly, not 4K, not 8K. If I have to use it and not get another phone with better PPI I won't use VR with my phone. Get it?

I want a large phone and im thinking the v10 over the 6p, cause it has more then the 6p such as the removable battery + sd card slot.
What does everyone think?
>>
>>51401793
6p kills it in raw performance. Camera and finger print scanner are also superior than that of the V10's. But as you said, V10 has removable battery + sd expansion. Pick what's more important to you.
>>
>>51401901
is there a big difference in performance?
because im still really undecided, like if i can get a 64gb 6p im fine without sd card and battery wise i think the 6p has a bigger one anyway right?
>>
>>51401981
the difference is 6P has SD810 which is 4 Big cores and 4 small cores.
V10 has SD808 which has 2 Big cores and 4 small cores.

So in theory the 6P is twice as fast in high CPU use scenarios.

However because of throttling real world performance wont be nearly as pronounced.
>>
>>51402018
I just did a little searching, apparently the SD810 has a few heating problems?
also looked at a quick comparison and the v10 has an IR port, radio, IPS opposed to 6p's AMOLED, that dual camera thing and the top mini screen.

Im leaning a bit more to the 6p now because of the screen and more power + better camera and obviously it runs marshmellow, however do you think the IR port and radio are really a big loss?
>>

No, the screen barely curves 1mm. The glass/bezel makes up the majority of the curve.

So was the letter "b" chosen for /b/ randomly?
>>
>>51405005
No, it was called /b/ from 2chan legacy. It was first called /b/ - Anime/Random.
Then anime and random were split.

Sure. Mine still runs to this day. Used it for 6 years and after that my mother uses it for another 2 years. Not it gathers dust in the drawer.

Looking to upgrade form a now-sluggish-even-when-texting Galaxy S3 (RIP 2012-2015). Not really looking for super high-end, max I am willing to go is $650~. I wanted the 6P but the shattering.bending issues give me pause. I've big hands, but I've never had a phablet of any kind. I'd be fine with an S6, but the S7 might be right around the corner. Halp?

S7 should be February or march. If you can wait that long, do so.

If you cant wait the S6 is the current most powerful phone besides the Note5. .
