Chromeboxes are actually a better value for around the same price point if you don't give a shit about windows. Entry level NUCs uses atom CPUs while Entry level chromeboxes use Haswell CPUs and come with 2GB of ram and 16gb SSD.

If you just plan to use the mini PCs as a streaming HTPC only 2gb of ram and 16gb SSD is fine. Amazon was selling this for $140 just about a week ago.
>>
>>51394694
>You're not assembling your car, right? Why should this be different?
It's cheaper and smarter and if I wanted to waste money I would buy an ipad pro instead.

I use a Thinkcentre Tiny, they're a tad bit bigger than a NUC but have more powerful internals and can be fully upgraded

>>51394777
How silent is it?
>>
>>51394805
It has a fan so it's not perfectly silent but you won't hear anything if you're further than a foot away from it. The fan also sometimes starts hissing if you're sending the CPU into maximum overdrive doing something you probably shouldn't, but that's the extent of it.

Lousy research if you ask me. The current models have 4 USB ports, Mini DisplayPort, Mini HDMI port, ethernet port, 3.5mm audio jack and an infrared sensor. RAM is DDR3 SO-DIMM and M.2 SSD is used for storage. You can also get models with additional 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD slot.

>>51397127
There's no point in spending twice as much money to buy a fucking warranty...you are the consumer sheep they are making billions of dollars off of...here's a tip, buy hardware that is user serviceable (ESPECIALLY hardware that just sits on your desk stationary) and you are your own warranty.
>>
>>51397117
In case you missed it, the point of these devices is that they're small.
>>
>>51397169
Why are you talking about warranty? In brand new things, the price is to compare price/performance, both will have warranty so if both have it then is meaningless in the comparation.
Also the lenovo nuc can be open apart by removing 2 screws that have big heads so you can use your hand for it, it is user serviceable.
You still fail to prove the point >>51396855
>laptop specs
>laptop price
So I will just accept you can't find anything matching that.
>>
>>51397226
>soldered cpu

KEK

>the price is to compare price/performance

Anything with a mobile i5 ivy bridge processor or faster is AT LEAST as fast as this machine

In case you aren't aware, used thinkpads cost like $200...AND ALL OF THE PARTS ARE INCLUDED

Price/performance:

NUC: $600 (after required parts)/i3-4130t
T430: $200/i5-3320M

Since i3-4130T=i5-3320M then that means the T430 price/performance is at least 3 times better.
>>

I bought two of the re-branded ones from System76. Both with i3's, 4GB of RAM, and the 120GB "performance" SSD. Then I tossed a 1TB laptop drives I had on hand in each of them.

They're both just running the Ubuntu 14.04 installation that they came with. Great little task based machines to toss around. Super quick setup when you just need a computer for a demonstration or something.
>>
>>51397500
>they just etched their logo on the lid and put SSD with ubuntu installed into it
For what purpose?
>>
>>51397623
Warranty. Something I've noticed about the NUCs is that they have a pretty high RMA rate and I saw a couple people saying that Intel refused to replace the CPU or something because they had installed Linux on it. With System76 you can install any distro and they'll still honor the warranty.
>>
>>51397742
I find that hard to believe. The instructions that come with NUC specifically say that it has been tested with Windows, but "Other operating systems may be installed."
>>
>>51397835
Yeah, I don't know how much validity there is to that claim, especially since you COULD just buy one that didn't come with RAM or an SSD and then just pull the SSD before sending it back, but I didn't really want to dick with getting all of the parts and doing it myself.

The whole purpose of these things to me is that you pull it out of the box, plug it in, and you're up and running. Hell, the Ubuntu 14.04 installation that came on it was even fully up to date, no problem. It even had all of the customization I would usually have to do myself already done, disabling online search in the Unity dash, simple things like that.

At the end of the day I probably paid what, like 60 bucks more on each than they're worth? And I supported a great company who's trying to push desktop Linux by giving people pre-installed options. I'll take it.
>>
Depends on the components you chose. I tried the part picker from the System76 site and the price it gave me was 250$ more expensive than what I paid for the NUC and equivalent parts myself.

I'm the sys admin in a high school and have installed 120+ of these over the last 2 years into our labs. We mainly have the 5i5RYK and D54250WYK models, equipped with 8GB HyperX memory and 840/850 EVO M.2 ssds. They run fast as hell and can handle our Minecraft club on high settings.

Any common hardware failures?
>>
>>51407206
out of all of them we have only had one nuc hardware failure, which I suggest was out of missuse from the member of staff, the display port output on the motherboard broke.

Other than that we have had 4-5 sticks of ram fail, and 1 SSD. (interesting to note these were all within the first week or DOA)

All replaced under warranty pretty hassle free

I wish the school district I work for would make a move to these. They have everything that's needed at a fraction of the size and there's no CD drive for the little fuckers to break. They're not used but they take the rubber bands out and they grind like a fucking turbine when you turn them on. Yes, I'm usually too lazy to disable that shit.

Isn't the RAM in NUCs special?
It's not normal SODIMM RAM is it?
>>
>>51408320
The 5i5RYK he mentioned comes with HD 6000. The newer but equivalent model 6i5SYK comes with Skylake and HD Graphics 520.

Is the i7 version as loud as they say?
>>
>>51408699
According to the reviews that I've read, yes. I ended up going with the i5 instead.

Great devices.

Good enough for minecraft? And ive seen that HD 520 around is it better?
>>
>>51410949
Should be enough.
>>
>>51410949
nah probably worse. go for the 540 model as it has the 64MB of eDRAM that helpes a lot with grpahics and also is used as a L4 cache by the CPU

Do any of the announced nucs even come with 540? Even if one appears, it will be an i7 and have heat and noise problems.
