In the abstract, I would consider it appropriate to ban individual instances of users in an effort to appeal to classes of users.

I don't feel sorry for them necessarily, but I understand their frustration. I work with quite a few women who don't need the scales tipped in their favor, special privilege, or additional consideration to excel. They are absolutely fantastic programmers and mathematicians, and many of them expressed their frustration with how women without the skill to succeed blame some kind of social bias, instead of getting gud.
They all have said they've dealt with some amount of prejudice in their time, but it was isolated and they were able to easily overcome it with their technical prowess. One of these women was actually my boss for a while, and I both respected her and looked up to her. She is still one of the most technically competent people that I know. She is also a fantastic leader and a generally nice person.
