Would the SARX027 be a good first high-quality watch? I'm icky with the date window but I don't seem to have much options. I want something simple and versatile but at the same time I want it to look different. Maximum budget is $1000.

Also can anyone tell me what does enamelled dial mean?

Reposting my poljot chrono, I wasn't really sure at first. But I grew fond on it and wear it all the time now.

Pretty inaccurate though around 30 secs a day, and has some side noise to the tick of the lever escapement. I'm going to bring it to my watchmaker soon and let him take a look.

I'm more or less making fun of people who take watches seriously enough to avoid calling them watches.
I'm pretty sure I saw someone of WUS call their watches "Horological machines".

But more to the point - when you wank over the "micro-engineering" rather than just the "engineering" you exaggerate the purpose of the thread - this is fucking /g/, half the fucks in this thread can barely afford a Vostok.
Most of the people here with Vostoks aren't even interested in the engineering process behind them (which is sad, because it's probably my favourite design story of anything so simple/cheap), they're just buying a meme.

>Keep in mind these threads are often so shit because of posters like you contributing poor quality content.
kek
I lurk a lot, but I post pictures of watches every thread - everything new watch I buy I post so the hivemind can shit on it.
I post answers to questions people have when they want it (ID-ing movements, links for watches, links for replacement parts) and I only really shitpost when people post their shit covered currywatches.

It's a Raketa Kopernic, it was designed as a tribute to Nicolaus Copernicus and depicts an eclipse every hour with its overlapping hands.

I can't get a good picture of mine right now ( 3am and I don't want to wake the wife), but they come in a lot of different colours and actually have an upgraded version of the venerable 2609 Raketa handwinding movement.

Here's a silver dialed version, showing off that gorgeous domed crystal.

I've seen at least a couple of these straps up for sale, and honestly i wouldn't bother.

I once made a package deal on about 7 metallic straps and a Poljot Alarm (plus the poljots strap). And all of the straps with the exception of the super comfy Orient one were total shit, almost made me reconsider using a Vostok Amphibia bracelet. The 20$ solid link straps the chinks sell are quite a hell of a lot better.

Though i paid like 40$ in total for the watch and straps, so i guess that's alright.

Now excluding my rant, that domed bezel is so sexy.

As much as we complain, these threads are among some of the better ones on /g/. Most things here revolve around Windows vs. Linux, why Mac is gay, The Botnetâ„¢, which phone should I get, etc. The only threads I can think of that have comparable quality are the Thinkpad ones, and it's much the same deal over there. 1 time out of 10 someone will show you how to do a T400 IPS panel swap, or a processor swap on a W520, but the rest of the time it's just a circlejerk over who got the best computer for the least amount of money.

I somewhat agree, but the Kopernic band is super comfy - it's a bitch to put on, but it never pinches you and it moulds to your arm perfectly.

To be honest, the fashion watches aren't that bad a deal really for casual people.

If you just buy one to wear for a period of 2-5 years and then toss it when it gets too beat up or whatever, it hardly matters whether you jew a aliepress copy for $40 or just buy the real deal for what, $140?

Most casuals would probably rather pay $100 for years of not having to explain "oh, its not a DW but an equivalent, cheaper watch!" than save that money

All I know is Bertalan Farkas, Soyuz-36, Salyut-6, 1980, Heuer Montreal, might be military issued.

Interestingly he flew with Valeri Kubasov who seems to have worn a Speedy on the Apollo-Soyuz.

Very interesting. There is good reading material on it and I remember Shenzhou 5 being a big deal when in launched.
I must know more about this watch, looks amazing plus

Anon who got the radioactive hands here. I also got a few HMT's and none of them are radioactive. It seems the curry watches on Ebay are all made after they gave up on radioactive lume.

Then again a rule of thumb is that if the old lume yellows or even becomes brown then it's likely radioactive. Non-radioactive lume just doesn't deteriorate that much. Pic related, light yellowing on a tritium Speedy.

I didn't say tritium, a few look like radium, and it has to be gamma since my detector picks it up with the beta shielding on, which is basically a removable metal plate covering the GM-tubes, blocking beta particles.

And I have measured it, I can't measure anything on the other side of the plywood drawer apart from normal background. Pic related I use an old RKS-20.

All the Kopernics on ebay are pretty beat up and incomplete.

Just when looking for one, ensure it has a 2609 movement and has "HA" or "HN" marked after the 2609 on the movement body.

Look out for hand engraved markings - which are an immediate giveaway for a faked watch.

Why would the quartz give out before the automatic? Just random or is there a deep-seated mechanical reason?

>>51384044
probably the second hand on the quartz is higher, as the reason they are giving out is the crystal being compressed inwards
>>
>>51384044
Well it's kind of hard to judge with a sample size of one watch of each kind.

>>51384071
Sounds reasonable I guess. Do those watches have sapphire crystals or are they hardlex? I wouldn't think sapphire would be able to flex much without blowing up into a million shards. Also the casebacks were being bowed inward too, you can clearly see it on the other watches.

Fashion quartzes, generally speaking you're better off getting something else if you want a decent watch that is both accurate and lasts long time. Not to mention that black PVD coating usually has a habit of flaking off after a while. Strong Hardlex crystal protects dial from scratches

Stainless steel case; blue dial; date function; chronograph functions
Water resistant to 330 feet (100 M): suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving

Well it's a good watch, there's no denying that.

However it depends how much shekels are you shelling on it and for what purpose would you need a chrono over a regular watch.
>>
>>51389020
I do wind sprints and play tennis so at the very least I'd make use of the stopwatch fairly regularly. Although to me that seems more like an excuse for me since I could easily put down $15 and get a plastic sports watch that does the same thing and I wouldn't worry about beating it up.

But I'm looking to move up from cheap $20-40 watches for the first time, so I'm considering my options before making any buys.
>>
>>51389103
Well as far as nice a 110$+ watch it's a good one.

Bracelet seems to be fine but you'd be hard pressed to find a nice leather band if you're ever in need.

Honestly it'd be my first entry level watch, and i wouldn't care if its quartz or mech then i would have gone for it.

Please pull the stick out of your as and chill, mate. Nobody needs a justification for buying a chrono.
I also got one because it looks very good. I have no need fo a chrono at all. And if, my smartphone would be more precise, probably.

Don't wear your watch on the same arm you hold the racket, watche don't like shocks. Mechanical don't like them at all, but the quartz is also not shock proof. Get a casio for tennis.

Having to turn on a screen to see the time is useful in the same way beating my balls with a hammer is useful.
>>
>>51389372
you don't have to turn it on. you just look at it. You guys don't actually look at your analogue watches to tell the time though do you? Alarming

The stuff in the pic looks like a watch for a 12 y/o. Could at least have googled for the better looking smartwatches, m9.

I'll be surprised if they won't look like shit in a years use.

Check out the SSB series chronos too for the sweet meca-quartz action in the same price range.

I'm just pointing out that a technology subreddit where people consider themselves tech enthusiasts and waste their time on useless shit like a raspi or a PC, should not be wearing analogue watches. None of you have taste anyway or you wouldn't all be non-mac users

i'm sure the rubber ones will be in a land fill much before that. they are like $4 each though and are much better quality than most sports bands

you all fail at being nerds. deal with it. The wrist is too convenient of an area to waste on a device that only tells the time. Nobody gives a shit what your watch looks like. Nobody can tell the difference. I just assume it's some garbage cheap shit if you're fat or have shit fashion sense in other areas. Whereas a smart watch is going to give you an edge in productivity and is just more convenient. Plus if you have a shred of discipline you may even reach a BMI that doesn't mean death at 60
>>
>>51389380
Why the fuck would I wear a watch otherwise?
>>
>>51389558
if it's just to tell the time, why would you spend any more than $5 on it? All watches look like they are worth $5 anyway if the person wearing it doesn't have swagger

It's nice, I bought one for my dad. Really like the feel of the pushers and the proper flyback, only downside is folded end links but it's $100 so what can you expect?

How many apps does it have though?

Yo /g/

I'm joining the army in 6 weeks and I need a good and durable watch, know there are a lot of military watch guides out there but I need to know what's not "meme quality".

Serving in the northern parts of Noway so it has to be waterproof (Showering/swimming/mud), withstand temperatures down to -30/-40 Celsius, and preferable be easy to charge/replace battery. Meme features such as alt/baro are not required but would be nice. Looking in the $100-$250 price range.

What makes it special?
Am I just paying for colors?
Or for a Name?

Its not worth over 200 dollars in reality, but how do you justify its sentimental value grandpa?

Same reason some collect stamps, manga, magazines, gems or pretty much everything else.
