In the old mainframe days, we had the "app web", not web apps. Few people owned a powerful computer, so if you wanted to use a program, you ran it on a remote machine. Plan 9 was going to take that to the next level. You could have theoretically had something like a modern web browser for remote machines that served access to remote software via embedded rio instances. Now we all have powerful computers, more storage than we know what to do with, and fast internet connections, so why not download programs and keep them locally? It's just the better solution.
Because even a compiled binary can be copied, modified, and studied, of course. Can't have that. People might find out that you track them, and, *gasp*, block your program from phoning home, crack your software, or worse.
Local copy = you own it, it's like IP laws don't exist
Remote copy = IP laws are enforceable
Better push less powerful computers just to be sure people feel the need to use software they don't and can't fully control. That's more profitable software, to you.

This nonsense will run for a few years, but it's not here to stay. They are still outnumbered by reasoning people who will just snap out of the whole "tolerance" and "correctness" thing and react accordingly by putting it away as the nonsense it is.

The good thing about internet is that it is really open, whether there are big things like twitter, facebook or tumblr, you still can (in a civilized or clever way) stand against this kind of stupidity. And if you can discuss it and stop feelings from getting in the way, you really should. I don't actually understand the reasoning behind it. I guess it's so that they don't have to do any extra work when adding a new member initializer. Traditionally, you'd have to do ALL THAT WORK to go to the right side of the variable name, and THEN type a comma (optionally hitting delete to bring the comment back into alignment).
If I recall correctly, C# did away with this by simply allowing you to have a trailing comma at the end of these sorts of things.class dick : public butt
