I don't want to be like all the little freetards vouching for the system that they installed and can hardly use, but I also hate listening to people who actually know how to program explaining why their project is the only option just because nobody else is in the room who can contradict them.

I didn't have any PC unable to run any of these operating systems.

That's maybe because I started with a Pentium II,then went with Pentium 133 and AMD K6s,and so on until XP SP2 where I had a DDR2 LGA775 system, which still chugs along with 7/Xubuntu 15.04 today.

not until recently
Windows 98 -> Windows 7 was because I fell for the M$ meme
Debian was because I read about Linux in some PC magazines (MaximumPC and CPU - computer power user)...I didn't quite understand why anyone would want an OS that can't do anything entertaining so I switched back to 7.
After that I started questioning why I used computers. At this point I had taken an AP Java class at my highschool as well as a few other programming courses, but I only felt like I knew less about computers after this. To be honest I felt like I knew the most about computers when I threw together a gaymen rig in 9th grade (and proceeded to fuck that up by ordering the wrong RAM).
Eventually I entered a sort of zen state where as long I was in front of a screen I would be entertained. So I distrohopped for a while. I didn't learn that much other than the name of a lot of programs designed to mitigate certain problems linux users thought could be made into even bigger problems. Before I even knew about linux, I had a problem with fetishizing software (which ISO mounting utility was the best?)

The Mac experience was temporary owing to licensing issues I had with the hardware.

A lot of the later switch backs only lasted a day and I only mentioned them because I was so fucking annoyed about something in Windows that I did a wipe and installed Debian.

Yeah, it was based on the System V specs. Not that bad but the hardware was a bit slow, mainly due to the fact that CBMs' Unix engineers didn't bother implementing support for the Amiga's dedicated chips, sadly.

Ho, ok :) old memories… I used ck1 kernel for a while on my desktop but didn't saw that much improvments compared to vanilla kernel with CFS. However I saw neat differences using it on a production database cluster (MariaDB with master/master and master/slave replication) with heavy I/Os load.

Pretty much. Microsoft really dropped the ball on certifying piece of shit hardware as "Vista Ready", but it was mainly third parties who couldn't get off their lazy asses in time to write decent drivers. If you had good hardware made by a competent company Vista was fine from day one.

I abandoned the Apple ship when the Mac App Store was introduced. I had spent the previous couple of years pulling my hair out trying to make my Apple products play nicely with my Linux stuff, anyway. (Avahi was my nightmare... turns out it was foreshadowing.)

Currently in the middle of replacing Debian (still on Wheezy) with OpenBSD, but it's taking a while. Lots of moving pieces and I'm trying to simplify at the same time.

I'm mostly abandoning Debian due to systemd. The philosophical problems I have with it will preclude it from touching my personal systems for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't have a problem running it at work, though.

We're running EL6 at work, so we're safe for a few more years. We were doing EL7 testing for a couple months and it was a disaster. Some good ideas and potential, but far, far too many bugs. I really hope Red Hat gets its shit together before we have to EOL those systems.

Windows 7 has all sorts of help files that I find really convenient. Its got a friendly layout that is easy to use and still has decent access to command line applications and file browsing.

kubuntu isn't a DE, its a distro. keyboard shortcuts are configurable in every single DE/WM. you can make the 'win' key (super key in linux) open the start menu and your own customized keyboard shortcuts for small things like that and more

>Window Snapping
>Resizing one snapped Window resizes the other
Most modern window managers do this or at least support it. This is not a new feature. I remember playing with this like, ten years ago and it wasn't new then, either.

>Cortana
I should have stopped reading here. What is so useful about Cortana, exactly? Why are you doing this sort of thing on your workstation, instead of on your phone?

>Useful keyboard shortcuts out of the box like Ctrl+Shift+Esc
Subjective and completely configurable. Besides, it is unreasonable to expect a completely different OS to approximate out of the box the shortcuts you happened to grow up with, especially when they don't all make any sense in the new context.

>Everything is set up out of the box
Uselessly vague and demonstrably false.

>Automatic driver downloads
All of the mainstream distros do this, including proprietary shit. The only times I have had to deal with drivers on Linux are either when I'm deliberately using an ancient kernel or something like Gentoo/Arch or a minimal Debian install.

>Simple, usable interface that doesn't go full retard like Gnome or Unity
Um... what? I've used Windows 10. It *is* full retard. Or at least *I* would argue that it is. Again, mostly subjective. Just because something is different from what you've become accustomed to, does not make it bad.

>The ability to change the fucking interface color without downloading 3rd party themes
I actually forgot about this for shit like Unity and GNOME 3. Those devs are fucking retarded, I'll grant you that, but it's not like you don't have plenty of other choices.

>Pin apps to start
Yet again, "start" means nothing. It isn't even called "start" in Windows anymore. Hasn't been for years.

tl;dr: You want a Linux distro that mimicks Windows. That shit stopped being popular over a decade ago. The 14 year olds who were responsible for those attrocities realized that it was stupid and counter-productive.

Um... the first response in that pic literally gave the correct answer. You absolutely CAN use the windows key for this purpose.

The catch is simply that you MIGHT break other things, which depends entirely on what you've got installed and how you have things configured. The only time I've run into this myself was a proprietary 3D modelling suite that didn't (at the time) give you an easy way to remap key bindings.

Doing something similar in Windows or Mac would have the EXACT same potential side effects.

Are you actually retarded?

Huh?

Remapping keys is generally considered an "advanced" feature. Normal people don't even consider it. Even most Linux users probably don't even consider it, because the ones that would, aren't using a DE anyway, so it's irrelevant.

So. You're a "power user" (a term that oozes contempt from anyone using it to describe another). In typical "power user" fashion, rather than actually learning your new graphical environment, you've decided to go ahead and redefine keycodes. You are literally telling the X server that when you press one key, you're actually intending to press another, potentially breaking all sorts of shit. This is a level of control you literally cannot get on Windows without physically rewiring your keyboard, but you're comparing it some shitty third-party app to rebind keys in a video game or something.

So let me turn this around: why is editing a plain text file so difficult for you?

This is how literally every other OS besides Windows functions. Even OS X. Any graphical interface is simply editing text files on the back end. And those GUIs suck. GUIs will always suck. The past several decades have simply been an effort to get them to suck progressively less. But they will always and necessarily impose artificial limitations. Anyone expert enough to be interacting with low-level files will invariably and constantly run into limitations trying to do something that a GUI developer either excluded to make the GUI suck less or that they simply didn't consider. Which is why there usually isn't one for stuff like this. Because it's a waste of everyone's time, including yours. Your time is better spent actually learning and understanding what you're doing, rather than making inaccurate assumptions based on pretty pictures.

Gods help you if you ever find yourself needing to edit the Windows registry.

You have been identified as a "power user" by your petulant and irrational behavior. It is intended as an insult.

Anyway, your Google Fu is weak. The simple solution you want does exist and is actually installed by default in some distros: ksuperkey. Not a shiny GUI, but does the job you described.

My windows 7 laptop died at the time and my uncle lent me an Asus netbook with only 1gb of ram, Lubuntu was my only option at the time and besides some weird minor bugs, I liked that distro.

After that, I got my new laptop with Windows 8.1 preinstalled, was shit but good enough for my stuff. 6 months later, 10 released, upgraded and damm, was even shittier and after some random update, just refused to run. I said fuck it, and installed 7 along with Ubuntu Mate.

primary OS listed first. The best so far: gentoo. It has compilation times, that's sure, but it has the least amount of bullshit among the OS I tried until today. Arch doesn't give a fuck about you, a pacman -Syu brutally overwrites everything you cared about, and wants too much time to unfuck something. OTOH, gentoo has an option to save on the disk the penultimate version of everything you have on the disk, so in case of a fuckup you can always emerge -K precedent-version. Also, among binary distros (which I do not like because recompilation implies no more regular updates) debian is the one I liked the most: enormous repos, the most popular one, support everywhere... It's a shame that current version has systemD in it. I heard it can be removed though.

Since you have not set a foot near a server, it's not important for you. But for me it is. Not being able to simply predict its behaviour is a problem, and the fact that after a kernel update it needs a reboot (or a really, really dirty hack) is an even larger one. And it's only the first of a long list of problems. Refrain yourself from shitposting.

Still a kid, still using it for paint but now I play some shitty games too

Now I start learning how to use a computer, now I have my own wallpaper, folders, Now I use the internet with Chrome and play runescape and shitty pirated games
> Windows 7
Same thing as XP, but looks better, learn some more advanced features

My first laptop came with it, felt pretty good and non-bloated
> Windows 8.1
I liked it too, pretty good and non-bloated
> OS X Yosemite
Great OS with zero bloat, but occasionally lags and freezes
> OS X El Capitan
Simply the pinnacle of OS's, looks gorgeous, performs greatly, doesn't crash anymore and has a great free Office alternative built in (iWork package)

Dabbled with Linux here and there, but every time there was a reason or necessity for me to use Windows again, usually due to lack of hardware support (don't get me fucking started on the retarded way the sound works) or lack of application equivalent.
