Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid windows dual booting for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

Sorry for bothering you chaps, but I have a question. I am using Debian with XFCe and the WM, Thunar, that comes with it. Now, browsing image files is terribad. The WM doesn't remember settings for individual folders, just uses what I configure for everything. Also, uploading images is to 4chan is a pain due to the selection window in pic related. Is there anything that does this good, as in, like the windows WM? I would like to have the option to set views per folder, and be able to change views in the selection window as well.

Ok, so is there no way to boot to windows from grb command line or are internet people incapable of helping

Linux bootloader fucked up during update
>how can i get in to windows for now
>Run grub-update from linux cd
>Run fixmbr on your windows cd

Like ffs, there has to be a way, but i never found it... Gave up and installed windows 10 over my 7 + Linux boot...

>inb4 just use the media dipshit
Didn't have access to do so at the time, didn't wanna download a 1GB ISO to fix a bootloader
>>
>>51360533
you can change all the settings with keyboard shortcuts, why would you want folder-specific settings?
the selection windows is calles gtk-file-chooser and you can either use another one and go through tzhe process of patching your browser or you could use one window with thunar to drag a picture to the upload box like everyone else. i actually did the same back in windows because it was faster and more practical imo. if this is too much for you you could use KDE.

I'm aware that there are many linux distros that route traffic through the TOR network by default, does this genuinely increase my anonymity or does it just mean that I'll end up under scrutiny rather than the default mass data collection? Second to that, will this cause potentially illegal traffic to be routed through my network?
>>
>>51360443
manjaro just works, it does not need 10 hours of finding out what you miss like arch
or 100 hours of compiling like gentoo
>>
>>51360764
I only know of two, maybe three.
It's not magic, if you don't understand what it's doing then you should maybe not use it at all.
Normally the default would be to run as a client, so you're not even routing. It helps the network to be a relay node though, or better yet an exit.
How could we know if you'd be under extra scrutiny? Tor project seems to think the solution to this would be to route everything over tor all the time so that they don't know the difference between what you're doing. Also, in a system where they may be collecting everything always, what does extra scrutiny mean?

Nobody can upload shit to the AUR, the aur is a repo of makepkg files, nothing else.

Is pretty simple, if the pkgfile points to a some random shitty domain instead of whatever the fuck upstream is, you just don't use it.

But their website says the security team does not focus on testing. That along has kept me away from stretch. I also read that the kernel is usually outdated compared to stable! Are you a stretch user? Are these things true? I mean, surely testing can't be really unsecure right?

Hi /flt/, I'm in need of your help again.

I've just received an Asus A6000, which has the following primary specs:
-Pentium M 760 processor
-512 MB of DDR2 533 MHz RAM
-60 GB HDD (I think it's 5400 RPM, because it's really slow when it comes to accessing files in XP)

I'd like to make it usuable again with a basic Kingston SSD, and adding 2 GBs of RAM instead of 512 MB.

My question is: what kind of distro should I use? What'd be the best choice for it? It'd be used for simple surfing, reading news, etc (nothing serious).
>>
>>51362068
maybe trying it with PlayOnLinux? You can install different versions of Wine, and can install patches too (it made GW2 work like charm with the patched Wine version I've downloaded with POL).

My order was:
1. Debian
2. Some distro based on slackware
3. Many types of puppy linux, Knoppix
4. OpenSuse, along with the top ~20 distros on distrowatch
5. Back to pupylinux and other flash drive distros
6. Linux Mint, ubuntu, debian

I started with Debian when I bought a used laptop from a university surplus store when I was 7, and I had no idea about the difference between PPC and x86. Debian was the only distro I could get to work well on the orange transparent clamshell laptop I bought.

I had windows on my desktop from when I had a 98 machine, then an ME machine, then an XP machine, then an XP machine that had an upgrade to Vista. After I upgraded to Vista I started hating windows, and someone visiting my church gave me a Knoppix CD. After that I removed Vista and installed many kinds of GNU/Linux, mainly using opensuse. I had almost 30 distros on one hdd.

I only went back to Windows when I got into gaming a few years later, but I kept using GNU/Linux on mobile devices. Now I am trying to switch over to vt-d emulation for games, and I got a eyefinity 6 card to get my 5 monitor setup working on linux.

As someone who has tried every single one of these distros for at least a month in the last couple of years, I can confirm this image is accurate.

I recommend Debian stable or testing to most people I know. The installer is rock solid (although it takes forever) and gives you the option of whatever DE you want. There's pretty much no reason to use anything else unless you want the AUR, in which case go with Manjaro, or better yet, use Architect to install Arch.
>>
>>51361944
>I could only make 2 more partitions. Which means no swap or no separate root/home parts. Both options suck.

huh? swap partition is the old way
now the good way is swap file
and same goes for separate root/home
for desktop it puts you to choice that can fuck you up later, what if /tmp will need to go big for something, what if too much root and not enough home

single partition master race and use rsync to backup your home before reinstall, that gives you same shit as separate home

I want to install a linux that's user-friendly, but will also be a great tool to TEACH myself linux more in-depth. I have tried over 25 distros via installing/live-usb/virtual box, but some experienced user input would be appreciated.

I have mostly used Manjaro, Xubuntu, and debian. I enjoy tinkering a bit - I want to learn - and maybe move into something more "involved" once I feel comfortable. However, I get frustrated when things *should* work, but I have to battle with the computer to sort things out. You know what I mean. Also, I'd like a distro that is tolerant to being off-the-net for stretches of time, so updating frequently might be a problem.

I'm getting a new laptop soon, and am thinking of starting with Xubuntu as my first full-time linux:

1 - will I be able to learn linux on this distro, or will it be too spoon-fed?

2 - this distro has no privacy leaks to Canonical, does it?

I do like a rock solid machine, so maybe I should just jump in with debian? I've read it can be about the same complexity as Arch, so maybe I should learn via Manjaro and procede to Arch eventually? Updating might be a problem as I travel, so a rolling release might be a poor choice...

Also, I support the principle of FOSS, so again, maybe debian is a good target...? I managed ok with it before, so maybe I should just start there? Or stick with Xubuntu at first?

I'm just having a hard time figuring out what the best entry-point is for me. As I said, I've "test-drove" a bunch of distros, but a friendly nudge in the right direction would be great,
>>
>>51362448
Debian stable should be perfect for you, you can wait 2 years and still update it.
>>
>>51362448
Arch, gentoo, or linux-from-scratch if you want to learn how to use the CLI. I recommend Arch because it has a very indepth wiki for teaching yourself the basics.

Xubuntu isn't going to teach you how to use Linux, because in the end, if you're assuming that Linux is just the desktop environment or the shell, then you're mistaking the body of your car for the engine and the frame underneath it. The only way you'll ever learn how cars really work is to become a mechanic, which means getting under the hood, which means ditching the GUI completely and learning the command line.

The best way to do this is to just not even install a DE at all, and only install a window manager like Openbox or something similar, along with the X window server, for whenever you need to run a graphical program such as a web browser or something.
>>
>>51362448
I got Arch vibe from you, you did your work (fucking hell 25 distros) and read and write detail shit
you obviously dont suffer from ADHD so that you would be unable to follow some guide...

http://www.linuxveda.com/2015/04/20/arch-linux-tutorial-manual/

but, theres one thing, if you go straight to arch, you wont get to really appreciate how great it is when you dont spend some time in inferior stuff

also beware what notebook you are getting, new stuff tends to not perform well first year on linux, debian probably gets skylake support in 2018

Recently trying out debian and I really like it. It respects muh freedomz, which is really neato.

ATM just using it in a VM, but at some point I will need to install it on my laptop (macbook pro). Not sure how much of a pain in my butthole it will be installing all of the drivers. Anyone have any experience in this arena ?

Also I'm thinking of creating a shell script which installs and configures everything the way I have it in my VM right now. Is that sufficient, or should I look into some kind of config management tool like puppet or ansible ? Do people actually do that for their personal machines ?

Once you get it running, it should just werk.
If you really wanted, you could clone your entire VM's drive into a partition on your macbook, then update grub from the live cd, and that should work.

>Is that sufficient, or should I look into some kind of config management tool like puppet or ansible ?
puppet standalone would be good for this but it's overkill. Unless you're really meticulous it's unnecessary. Configuring a new install really only takes a few commands, most of the time spent doing it is figuring out what you want, some is spent figuring out how to do it, and very little is spent actually doing it. Puppet will remember how to do it for you just as well as a text file or writing it down with pen&paper would.

I'd recommend setting up a script for some basics or even just taking notes in a file. You can tar up your config files save those too if you wanted.

Administration was done by pretty simple shellscripts for decades just because it's so easy and quick.
>>
>>51364858
Don't bother, if you want to go towards gentoo then try calculate first or just jump in to gentoo, it's easy enough if you have the time. Otherwise just stick to regular, more stable, binary distros, that's all sabayon is.

IMO compiling isn't so bad, just let it run overnight if you need to compile Firefox or something. The kernel is another story. The configuration tool is a confusing and clunky piece of shit and having to dig through millions of options finding the ones you need is annoying. So annoying that you may as well use genkernel, so you may as well use Arch.

Damn. Same result as I got with ifconfig. It says wlan1 is down, and I killed everything with "airmon-ng check kill". Took eth0 down too just to be sure. Still when I try to do "macchanger --mac 11:11:11:11:11:11 wlan1" it tells me interface is busy.

I'm pretty much bummed at this point.

As per https://forums.kali.org/showthread.php?2000-Trouble-with-macchanger

I have a question about dual-booting.

Currently, I have three drives: one SSD for Debian, one HDD used exclusively for storing moives and ebooks, and another SSD that's basically unused.

I want to install Windows on the unused SSD and dual boot for reasons (full disclosure: my girlfriend wants me to play Planetside 2 with her and that game only comes with Windows client).

Since I'm going to be using the Windows drive for that gayme and nothing else, I don't particularly care about any potential data loss for that drive.

Is it possible to do something like
>hibernate from Debian
>reboot to Windows and do the deed
>shut it down and reboot to Debian
>pick up from wherever I left off
without breaking something? I don't want Windows doing something stupid like automatically mounting my other disks and fucking them up irrevocably.

I created a Linux Mint USB around a day ago, its neat and all but i would like to save what i do.

>>
>>51365950
Nah, there's nothing to worry about if you unmount the storage drives before hibernating. If it's formatted ntfs or FAT Windows will probably try to mount it.
*Even if you leave it mounted it will probably be marked dirty and windows won't bother.
>>
>>51365875

For those who care, I solved this. Your naming conventions for your bzImage when moving it to /boot/ are important. I'm not entirely sure, but I think
sudo make modules_install install
transfers your bzImage to /boot/. When I used ll on /boot/ there was a kernel image I did not manually put there that matched the size and timestamp of my manually moved version. When I tried to boot it with GRUB2 it worked (almost) perfectly. It booted, which is what I wanted. With a few errors but I think they're fairly minor.
>>
Hi /flt/
I tried to install Debian as a dual-boot to my Microsoft Surface a couple of months ago, but it was way too proprietary for it to work properly.
I asked my friend, who's massively into making all his stuff run on free software, and he referred me to a list of sold-free modified thinkpads from various websites endorsed by the fsf.
https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom
They all look pretty good to me, especially the Taurinus X200 (as it's a little cheaper for me with the poor exchange rate for AUD lately). Do you think I should buy one for an intro to linux? I'm thinking I should use it to get a feel for the system, then learn the command line, then switch my distros for the experience (and because I like ricing). What do you think?
>>
>>51365875
>kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable
the
>kernel panic
means that it loads your kernel from /boot fine and then panics afterwards (because it can't mount /). This is what will happen if you don't include the right driver for your drive, for example

>>51366173
>make modules_install install
make is what compiles everything (through makefile magic)
make modules_install installs all of the modules you compiled into /usr/lib
make install literally just copies your bzImage (from /usr/src/linux/arch/x86_64/boot/ or whatever is appropriate) to /boot, but renames it with version info and should rename the already existing kernels with the same name as .old. Also copies /usr/src/linux/System.map which maps addresses to modules and is necessary to be in /boot

It sounds like you mightve been accidentally booting into an older compiled kernel or some other previously existing kernel which was panicking, but the final one you made booted fine?

>>51365719
I haven't used kali but that looks like a pretty normal rc script. Systemd will always(?) use NetworkManager afaik, seeing as they were developed by the same guy. So I'm going to guess it's your fault for not knowing your system!

Try taking a peek at the file so you can tell us what it is and I hope to god you can figure out from
/etc/init.d/networking stop
how to start, restart, reload, or status it

you shouldn't have any troubles. Windows won't be able to mount it, and even if it tries, it will says (probably) that the /swap partition is currently being used I think.
Planetside 2 is listed in playonlinux. That means you should be able to install it and run it. You'll have to lower the graphic quality maybe, but it should run.
