Why do we suffer massdrop?

They aren't really cheaper at all, especially since they charge you for shipping.

They are slow as fuck to ship stuff out too. This drop ended like early October for example.
>>
>>51352695
>buying from massdrop instead of amazon when you can
>implying amazon or another resaler cant order ~50 units to get lowest price from the manufacturers.
Only use massdrop for products you cant get from large stores faggot
Also shipping usually takes under a week

the firmware is completely fucking terrible. linux or windows, the keyboard does not accept any keypresses until about 30 seconds after boot. ckb-daemon under arch definitely helps but that delays my desktop launching. extra keys are great for world of warcraft.

I currently use a Unicomp Customizer that I picked up in 2011, so buckling springs board with whatever caps they use by default, I'm not sure.

My next keyboard will likely be something custom, I want tenkeyless, Cherry MX Clear switches with red backlight, multimedia keys (preferably with a volume knob, not buttons), probably plain black caps for the illumination's sake.

If I didn't go illuminated, it would probably be something like pic related (white text), but hopefully a keyboard with aforementioned volume knob, probably not WASD.

Do mechanical keyboards have any meaningful impact on a person's performance, WPM, accuracy, that sort of thing, or is it just a question or preferring how one technology feels over the other?
>>
>>51356758
Performance boosts varies per person depending on switch type, and it's mostly a matter of preferance

Other solid reasons to get mech boards are their durability, customizability (able to swap springs, add new keycaps, add O-rings) and a more solid feel compared to rubberdomes
>>
>>51356758
Some rubberdomes are so inconsistent about how much force they require it can start slowing the user down.

My old Logitech G15v2 was getting pretty horrible to type on because some keys required so much more force than others. I tried measuring the keys by stacking coins on them: The W key took like 30 grams to activate, while Numpad 5 (probably one of the less used keys) was closer to 80 g.

I ended up modding a QuickFire Rapid with MX Clears and O-rings for smooth but consistent typing feels.
>>
I know /g/ recommends reds for m-muh games, but they're too damn soft, would browns be the next best option?

Serious question- how come I never see any non-qwerty layouts in mech threads? I never really gave any thought to keyboards until I started lurking, and there are some really sexy boards that get posted but everything's qwerty... I would think that the people who go as far as to put together their own board would have at least considered a different layout so I'm just curious if everyone's too lazy to get used to another board, or what the deal is with that...

Consider it an investment in avoiding a potentially big gamble.

I ordered enough arbitrary DSA caps to make up the alphas and numerals as a cheap way to check if I liked typing on such caps. The answer ended up being no, which saved me from potentially buying a full set for many times what I paid, then never using it.

Poker actually has bad build quality the paint scratches off. You all think the aluminum case is good but when mass produced its worth $15 and the keycaps are also just plastic. Cherry switches cost less than $40 for all the keys when buying in bulk. Also with reliability when was the last time a shitty $12 rubber dome keyboard broke? This transitions to mech keyboards as well its not hard to solder a switch to a board. Anything over 120 is ridiculous.
tl;dr get boards from large companies like coolermaster or corsair because they sell boards for reasonable amounts ~70 - 80.

They are a Chinese Cherry MX clone.

They have terrible QC (though better than Kailh).

But they are made with a softer plastic. Due to this the switches come out with smoother plastic. They are supposed to feel smoother than cherry when pressed.

A lot of people claim they are currently the best switch out there, but the difference can only really be noticed when side by side with a Cherry.

No one will admit it, but I think a major part of the Gateron popularity is the fact they come in translucent casings, which make them perfect for ricers.

The problem is that if you have a strong tactile bump combined with a really weak spring, the switch might not be able to push itself back over the tactile bump on the way up.

I'd be careful recommending Zealios in their current form. Because they're using the transparent housing for the bottom (the non milky one) as well as the top, a lot of people are reporting fucked up switches because of the heat from the soldering iron is warping the plastic leading to messed up internal contacts.
>>
>>51368175
I have also heard of people getting a lot of DoA switces. One guy had a full third completely fucked up.
>>
>>51368294
I didnt get any issue tho. I think maybe people are using too much heat.

The only downside I got from zealios compared to cherry ergo-clears is that they have more wobble. Also, although being 62g, I dont think they are heavier than browns.
>>
>>51367700

I love greens.

Is this a good idea? Are gateron blues that much better?

Do NOT get gateron clears for a daily driver. They should be used only for specific purposes, like custom controllers or a macro pad. Typing on them is probably the worst feeling because they're so light, and the upstroke is really weak.

Pok3r has dvorak and colemak pre-programmed, just flick some dip switches.

It's even one of the more popular boards here I would say,

Gotta ask - why are you assuming we all type qwerty? I am not saying that I don't, in fact I do type qwerty, but just looking at keycaps isn't enough to tell a layout. Consider how many people type on blanks. It's not much of a stretch to type dvorak or colemak with qwerty caps, especially if you haven't got the money to replace caps yet. The layout can be handled with software most of the time as well.

There's one screw under the warranty seal, and in the fullsize models, there's two more under the feet.

The TKL just has the one screw. All I had to do was take that out, then use a thin knife to pop the clips holding the two halves together. Lifted the board and the controller right out.

Gonna get back in there later so I can put LEDs under the spacebar, because what the fuck WASD why did you make a backlit board and then skimp on the lighting.

I have the original. It's very nice. Got sick of how light blues were and also wanted to try out 60% so I bought a Pok3r a couple months ago. Got a lot of good years out of the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid and still keep it around as a spare. Might look into modding it with that custom controller so that it's programmable, and then also replacing the switches and stuff.

Only durability issue I had with it was something I noticed very recently. The casing is actually very scuffed up. It's kind of a rubberized plastic. There's a chance this was just from transporting it every week to LAN parties in a messenger bag that had other things in it.

no harm in getting a tester, but I've personally tried two different brands of testers that two different friends bought and it gave me as rough of an idea of the switches as that one gif that shows them moving and describes their force and such.. when they're not taking up an entire board you can't really get a feel for the typing experience

No idea. I've got a 60%s green/clear and a full-size with browns.

I'm scared of topre being a meme. I just don't need to spend 160+ on a potential meme. I'm tempted to find a Royal Kludge EC keyboard on massdrop one day. And I love the poker 3 case so I'm tempted to get a poker 3. But I'm also tempted towards getting a matias click v60.

fucking gr8, except for the lack of support on some of the fn keys. loud enough that if i want to hear keys i can, quiet enough that it isn't constantly obnoxious. feels fantastic

can't see myself buying another any time soon, shit was expensive and very satisfying so i don't want another :^)

Found someone selling a practically brand new Zalman ZM K500 (Kailh Red) for 18€. Read a bit people crying about Kailh but for the price it was basically free. Pretty slick touchtype feeling, was expecting more noise to be honest, and not many mechanicals have media keys which I need. I can blindtype since forever so I don't even have to change layout.
