I've been pirating for 10 years and this has literally never happened. Maybe if you download shit from disreputable sites and untrusted users then this happens but if you're doing that then you're an idiot.

And as an idiot on the internet you're far more likely to click on some dumb ad and get a virus from that.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my best to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

OP makes a good point. When developers have no other means of making a profit these are necessary measures.

I'm not sure if any of you realized this, but programming isn't a cake walk. Learning to code an efficient and stable program isn't something you wake up one day and are just able to accomplish. It takes a long while and hitting the books and practice before you can make shit worth anyone's time, and certainly anything somebody would bother pirating. People devote hours to learning how to make these products that many of you take for granted. You think it should be free and that they shouldn't be capable of earning a living. That's where you're wrong and that is why I agree with Edgar that they should strike back in full force.

really, most of the time people get infected, it's from downloading shady freeware and getting a drive-by from infected ads and shit
piracy is surprisingly low on the infection vector list, assuming you just go to the known usual places for shit, verified uploaders, etc

most of the software people pirate is also in the hundreds or thousands of dollars range, excluding games

I've been pir8ing since 1998 with zero problems. OTOH I'm not fucking stupid. Most PCs I clean up are not used for anything like pron or warez, they get infected from email attachments or visiting sites which are infected.

Of course I never surf the net using a Windows install that matters. That's what virtual machines or Loonix boxen are for.

Test all your pir8ed soft in a fucking VM before doing an install direct to disk. I often leave it in VMs since Loonix host + multiple VMs is a nice way to eliminate conflicts. The tools are free so there's no excuse for not taking advantage of them.

I've been pirating since years, the worst that happened to me was getting some adware from a Warcraft 3 shady torrent, which I managed to remove by restoring my system to like three hours ago.

This is a no brainer. Just get a good, paid anti-virus that won't accept bribes (I personally like NOD32), and always scan stuff you download. And of course, only go for non-shady torrents and check the comments to see if anyone is complaining about viruses. You should be safe that way.
>>
>>51328658
I have no idea how to use them

and doesn't a VM decrease system performance?

NOD32 saved my ass quite a few times, I am yet to find a single virus while doing a routine scan because NOD32 stops them all at the very instant they try to get in your computer
>>
>>51329241
>I am yet to find a single virus while doing a routine scan because
It could have more than 1 reason.
Maybe NOD32 just doesn't detect them at all.

My freeware Common Sense 2011 has never failed me while you pay 20 bucks a year.
>>
>>51329293
>Maybe NOD32 just doesn't detect them all

Nah, there are no viruses whatsoever, I've once got skeptical of it and downloaded a shitton of virus finding software, it's all clean.

And I don't care about the 20 bucks a year, I feel 100% safe with NOD32. If I were using free shit I would be paranoid of the fact that the free AV would accept bribes from other people to let their viruses fuck you up.
>>
>>51329293
This is where the argument "You just don't know you've been compromised" happens.

For me, I get paranoid every year or so and run a scan.
Nothing. And my computer is full of stuff.
>>

>>51329364

>>51328468
But it doesn't. It's legal and falls under the First Amendment. The only people arrested for lolicon were in specific states and they were judged under local state law, not federal law. The Supreme Court has overturned decisions to ban and imprison people for lolicon more than once.
>>
>>51329326
But somehow NOD developers wouldn't accept those bribes because?
>>
>>51329326
you don't have to worry about that if you're using the latest version of Common Senseā„¢
>>
>>51329402
Because me and thousands of other users are paying them exactly to refuse said bribes. No shitty hacker could ever pay more money than NOD's entire userbase. And if NOD fucks up, we will simply get another AV, that's the magic of capitalism: voting with your wallet.

Note that when I got an adware while using Warcraft 3, I didn't have NOD32 installed, had just formatted my computer and was still re-installing stuff.
