This is the kind of dickhead attitude that prevents a lot of good from happening. If everyone operated by your bullshit worldview, we wouldn't have shit like cars that drive themselves or the internet.

Dude just wants a phone that doesn't even have a chance of making someone fucked-up sick because they play with rare minerals all day.

That doesn't exist, and if you wanna try and think your making a difference by caring then you are delusional.

This desu senpai.
>>
>>51309763
You can still minimize harm done, even if you can't be completely ethical.
>>
>>51309784
Yeah you can, bike to work, don't buy anything with rare earth metals in it. So no phone, computer, TV. Oh also make sure you have an acre or to to farm for food since commercial farming is horrible for the environment. All this green save the earth shit is to make people feel better about destroying the earth. Like how in CA you can't wash your car even though all the car washing in CA is like 0.001% meanwhile industrialist farming uses more and more water so people in the colder parts of the US can get fucking cucumbers in the winter
>>
>>51309813
>All this green save the earth shit is to make people feel better about destroying the earth

Some things, yes. Most recycling, cycling instead of driving (the biggest problem here is that we'll run out of fossil fuel, not that it'll do any significant damage to the environment.)

Boycotting the meat and dairy industry and buying locally grown food would actually make a significant positive impact if we all did it. The problems caused by agriculture far outweigh the issues of fossil fuel.

But anyway, this thread isn't about Green policies. It's about ethical consumption on a human-scale. That is, avoiding products from companies that treat workers poorly. This isn't an environmental issue.
>>
>>51309870
>we'll run out of fossil fuel
I should stop reading your post here but i'll assume your a young impressionable kid fresh out of public high school. Let me say this very clearly, we are not going to run out of fossil fuel for 100s of years. Also car emissions are a drop in the bucket next to the coal power plants and industrial consumption of fossil fuels.

>Boycotting the meat and dairy industry and buying locally grown food
This is flawed logic. If even 20% of the population tried to buy local it would cripple small farms. The whole reason we have industrial farming is because local farming can't keep people fed

>this thread isn't about Green policies. It's about ethical consumption on a human-scale

No such thing ethical consumption in the modern world.
>>
>>51309970
Wow kid, you're pretty world-weary huh?

>we are not going to run out of fossil fuel for 100s of years.
This is a contentious issue. Some estimates say that, once we inevitably step up production, it will only last us until 2088.
>car emissions are a drop in the bucket next to the coal power plants and industrial consumption of fossil fuels.
This is exactly what I was saying, which means we're arguing over a moot issue.

>local farming can't keep people fed
That's because people have unrealistic diets. There's no way small-scale agriculture can keep up with the unhealthy amounts of meat people are demanding. That's why we need to collectively change our dietary habits, not that that will ever happen.

>No such thing ethical consumption under Capitalism

First you said fossil fuels, that number you spit out is for oil, and it's wrong. Go google tar sands and then look at who is putting out the reports on sweet oil reservoirs and then get back to me

>That's because people have unrealistic diets
Sure the american diet is bloated but are you going to say any of the colder climate towns/cities can keep the people fed in summer? What about winter?

>No such thing ethical consumption under Capitalism

You just outed yourself as a under 20, white, middle class dipshit. Capitalism is the problem? Dude you are delusional. Go look up how people starved to death in the USSR during the cold war, they couldn't keep the people fed. Same for North Korea you fool. And do you think the USSR had any green polices? Do you think North Korea does now?

>we would kill the economy
If it would kill your economy to stop relying on fossil fuels for energy then it honestly deserves to die. Why would you base your business on a finite resource anyway?

>when we are not even sure if it's happening,
It is very clearly happening, see statistical data from NASA.

>or if it's is happening if it's man made

You have no clue how important crude oil is to the global economy

>It is very clearly happening, see statistical data from NASA.

But it's now clear an NASA wanted to put black ash on the polar ice caps in the 70s because they thought the world was cooling

>It is, but even if it isn't why would it matter?
So you just wanna kill modern life for no reason at all? Enjoy staving and dying in your 40s dude
>>
>>51310161
>You have no clue how important crude oil is to the global economy
Yeah, I have an idea and I think it is bullshit. Oil dependency is the single most significant factor holding R&D efforts back.

>But it's now clear an NASA wanted to put black ash on the polar ice caps in the 70s because they thought the world was cooling
>hurr durr they were wrong once so they are wrong now
I'm not even going to bother checking if your claim is true, but even assuming it is, statistics don't lie. There is a 97% consensus among scientists that global warming is a real thing, at it has been documented as far back as the mid 1860s.

I mean, I buy the arguments concerning economy and industry and whatnot, but don't give me the science-illiterate bullshit.

>So you just wanna kill modern life for no reason at all? Enjoy staving and dying in your 40s dude
Fear mongering much? It's not like we lack alternative sources for energy.
>>
>>51310121
No, I am over 20 and working-class.
You just outed yourself as an indoctrinated American The USSR was never truly communist. Stalin saw to that. It was a failed revolution. North Korea is not Communist or Socialist, and if you believe that it is then you are delusional, or very gullible.

Besides this, you are assuming that politics can only swing toward Capitalism or Communism. There is no room from grey area in mind of the indoctrinated American. There are goodies and baddies. An Us vs. Them mentality. Democratic Socialism is not something that you could even consider as a possible alternative.

Capitalism creates profit better than any other political system, but it also creates conditions where individuals can be easily exploited for profit. There are as many heinous crimes against people under Capitalism, but fortunately for us, we rarely see them.

What the fuck are you smoking? Cheap fossil fuels are holding the industry back because it is less lucrative in investing in R&D rather than just buying oil.

Nice source you have there, it requires a subscription.

Meanwhile, straight from the horse's mouth: http://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/

Don't make a fool of yourself. As I say, I can buy economic arguments (provided that they are good enough), but there is no point in acting crazy and pretending that global warming isn't happening.....

>Total bullshit but since you get your data from Obama and Bill Nye i expect no less
Obama is a politician, and only politicians would be retarded enough to deny statistical facts.

I even know who Bill Nye is, looks like some retarded Doctor Who fan with that bowtie.

Not only NASA, the scientific panel of the UN, virtually every geologist, atmospheric researcher etc around the entire world, well beyond the influence of Hussein Obongo...

If you for one minute think that the anti-global warming "researchers" are anything but paid shills and the politicians and governors backing them are not given massive grants by the oil and energy sector, then you are beyond naive.

Who do you think earn the most money? A NASA researcher or oil company executives and politicians?

One from a company that's in the red.

Bottom line, if they lose money, you are actually punishing them when you make a purchase.

If on the other hand the company is profiting off your purchase, you're rewarding this exploitation and are human scum. If you buy an iProduct, you are subhuman scum.

So the entire oil and energy sector, then?

The Obama administration has cut back on research funding, the Bush administration cut back even more. Also, there are strong forces in the scientific committee of the congress that have a lot of their election funds coming from oil and industry.

I don't know what on earth would make you think that these scientists somehow dance to the pipe of an government that clearly wants eliminate their livelihood.

So you trust executives and politicians over scientists because scientists are obviously coloured by the politics and the insane amount of money you make from being a researcher (aka close to fucking nothing)?

>Here is the info on the 97% wanting to put ash on the north pole since it was getting to cold for them.
Again, this doesn't prove anything besides serving as lame rhetorics to ridicule scientists.

>>
>>51310689
It's funny how this works out, I think what you say the result of horrible media reporting and you think what I say is horrible media reporting. I don't wanna fight dude, at the end of the day we are going to continue to burn oil and coal, we are gonna keep having China strip mine it's land for rare earth. India's consumption is gonna keep going up and up. And at some point it will become to much for the earths ecosystem to correct for. Is it gonna be in my life time? Nope, so i'm not gonna worry about it. I'm gonna continue to buy cell phones and ride my dirt bike, smoke a little pot here and there and continue to punch the clock at work so I can keep mass produced food in my belly and dirty coal powered electricity in my house.
>>
>>51310735
Meanwhile I'm busy trying to do my PhD and improve technology while having to fight government cutbacks and spending 70% of my time chasing project grants, because of most money in the government budget labelled "research and development" end up going to oil industry subsidiaries in order to keep 70,000 engineers employed in oil companies rather than have them go to companies in other industries.

>I'm Norwegian
>>
>>51310764
In short, oil is bad both in terms of environment and in terms of the economy, m'kay

And the longer we pour money into the industry rather than spend the money on R&D activities, the more fucked we will get because it is a finite resource and the industry is holding back scientific and technological progress.
>>
>>51310764
>>51310788
